Hi Everyone I was wondering if someone could help me here - with a lookup or advise. My Problem is: 3xGGrandfather Charles LE[A]THERBARROW died 11 Jul 1849 Banbury aged 50 (making him born about 1799 - where?) When he married Eliza ENDALL at Banbury (St Mary's) in 1832 it says he was a Widower. Well. .. I have the St Mary's Transcripts and there is no first marriage and also no christening for Charles. Very few LE[A]THERBARROW entries before 1800s. My question is - Could anyone who has any surrounding parish registers have a quick look and see if there are a bunch of LE[A]THERBARROW names in any of them? If there are, I am quite willing to buy the Registers, but a bit expensive to go buying them all just on the off chance of a strike. Or, Could anyone give me some advise on how to go about finding more about Charles. I know he was a Tailor. Many thanks for everyones time Hester Queensland, Australia

The Genforum family history website has several messages re the surname LEATHERBARROW related to Banbury. One interesting suggestion is that another early alternative spelling of the surname was LITHERBOROUGH. Hi Ann I found the Genforum message board - thanks. There were several LETHERBARROW names mentioned that I recognise, so will post a reply. Thanks to those who have answered so far. Maybe I should have added a bit more in my explanation. To Mo Scanlan Actually, No I do not have the 1871 census - most of the others, but not that one - would love a copy if not too much trouble. To Brian Creed As you surmise, I have looked at the IGI and agree LE[A]THERBARROW seems to be predominantly Lancashire. To Rosemary Probert Sorry, should have said that I have the non-parochial for Banbury (it even has my Mum's christening on it!) Thanks for the answer though. To Ann Johnston What is the Genforum family history site? To Elaborate on my previous question: I have Charles LE[A]THERBARROW marrying for the second time in 1832 in Banbury (Edward LETHERBARROW was the witness) - no record of him before that. There were also John LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1823 Banbury William LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1818 Banbury and William LE[A]THERBARROW (widower) in 1830 Banbury at this marriage C. LETHERBARROW was the witness and Edward LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1826 Banbury Can find no Christenings for any of the above, or any Christenings for LE[A]THERBARROW before beginning of the 1800s. In Banbury Registers only marriage was John LETHERBARROW to Esther JAMESON 18 Sep 1753 ( and their deaths, but no children! And they were in Banbury, because many times were witnesses at weddings) So, my problem is, there has to have been some LE[A]THERBARROWS around here somewhere - are there some other Registers, or would they maybe have been christened outside of Banbury? I thank everyone very much for their time Hester Queensland, Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hester Moore" <familyhistory@optusnet.com.au> To: <ENG-BANBURY-AREA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, November 25, 2004 10:40 AM Subject: [BAN] LE[A]THERBARROW - Brick Wall - Can anyone help, please? > Hi Everyone > I was wondering if someone could help me here - with a lookup or advise. > > My Problem is: > > 3xGGrandfather Charles LE[A]THERBARROW died 11 Jul 1849 Banbury aged 50 > (making him born about 1799 - where?) > When he married Eliza ENDALL at Banbury (St Mary's) in 1832 it says he was > a Widower. > > Well. .. Hester I checked British Vital Records Index for LEATHERBARROW and find nearly all the Baptisms and Marriages occur in Lancashire - unfortunately there was not a Baptism for a Charles c 1799. The only locations that appeared in the index were Cheshire and Nottingham. Its possibly Charles may have come from further afield that you thought, have you checked the 1841 Census for that would indicate whether he was born in or out of the County! I note from IGI that an Edward LETHERBARROW married in Banbury in 1826, so now we have 2 about the same age. Also a son born to Edward ,in 1834 was baptised Charles. Possibly these 2 were brothers. Even in IGI predominance of the name is from Lancashire.
