    3. Hi Jill & all, John Kalabergo had arrived in England about 1806, firstly to Birmingham where he was befriended by a watch repairer, (who taught him a lot!) then to Northampton & he finally settled in Banbury around 1811. According to the booklet produced by St John's RC Church ... 'A Heritage preserved', JK gave one of the largest contributions to secure the purchase of building land for the future St John's Church. Before the church was built its recorded that Fr. Hersant ... ''often celebrated Mass on an oaken chest of drawers in a Catholic house in the old market place'' the most likely house to have been selected was no.36 Market Place,'' home & shop of devout Catholic, JK'' (JK later moved to the High St) John was buried on Friday Jan 16th 1852 in St John's churchyard. From all you read on this story it becomes obvious that JK was a much loved & respected man within the area & done much to help the poorest of the townsfolk - ie, weavers living in 'Tanyard' when the weaving industry declined, providing money to educate children - so they may have a better life. The 'stone' Betty/Jill mentions -- '' A few friends of the late JK erected a memorial stone to their highly esteemed townsman on Williamscote Hill'' The stone 'was' in the old Banbury Museum, several years ago it went missing, presumed stolen! The book Rhoda mentioned may interest other members also, as it is written in a way that takes you around the town/Chipping Warden/Williamscote/Wardington/ Fenny Compton , plus others on JK's travels - mentioning friends/customers/pubs/ publicans/the ones that found his body & were involved with the trial of his nephew, you get to know them all in some small way. Thats just the first 99 pages - the last part of the book (32 pages) covers ........... ''Rusher's original 1851 Banbury Directory''. I know some of the names & places will mean something to some of you. Tandy/Strange/Herbert/Tasker/Welford/Payne/Hancock/Lines/Lomas/Saul/ Pinfold/Garret/Griffin/Hirons/Walker/Ward/Hancock/Craddock + some ... anyway book is ------ John Kalabergo of Banbury by E.R Lester printed by Joshua Associates Ltd, Oxford (1975/6) No ISBN number (very much a local book) The TIC/Museum in Banbury have a 'few' copies still for sale at £6.50 Angela :>) admin Banbury
