    1. My Brick Walls, GRANTHAM/Canal and SKUCE
    2. Neil Grantham
    3. Dear list, following Angela's invite, here is a brief summary of my Banbury/Oxfordshire Ancestors and the area's I am looking at. The GRANTHAM and SKUCE names are from my Paternal Grandparents, Job GRANTHAM and Susan Ada SKUCE. The GRANTHAM line I have traced back to Wolston, Warwickshire, where my 4x Great Grandparents wed in 1765, they are my Brick wall on that line. I have some documents of a Mary GRANTHAM, recollecting her family, saying that Thomas came from the Black country or the potteries, but I cannot find him anywhere as yet. Bilton is mentioned in conjunction with lime kilns. This 'could' be Bilton near Rugby (the home of Rugby Cement), only a stones throw from Wolston, or even Bilston in Staffs. From Wolston they arrive in Lower Heyford early in the 1800's, the earliest record being the marriage of his daughter Ann to William Wells in 1813 Thomas built, with his sons, the Canal wharf at Lower Heyford, one of several at the time, and the only surviving one. Before it became Oxfordshire Narrow Boats, it was still called Grantham's Wharf. The family thus began their life trading coal and hay from the wharf, as well as transporting it. Many GRANTHAM boatmen are listed in PR's My Great Great Grandfather Edwin/Edmund/Edward was a boatman, until he ran an Inn in Mill street, Banbury. Loose ends are: Birth date of my Grandfather, Job GRANTHAM. I know he was christened at Christchurch, Banbury, 4th March 1891 Birth date of his parents Edmund (christened Lower Heyford on Christmas Day 1852) and Amy Amy was Amy WEBB at the time of marriage, but was a widow, and formerly Amy MIDWINTER. I can't find who Mr WEBB was, or when/where she was born, Census's state she was born in 'Kirlklington', I think I found an Amy MIDWINTER daughter of Job MIDWINTER but I need to check that. Death/burial dates of both Edmund and Amy. Note. Edmund became Edwin on his children's christening records, and Edward in 1891/1901 census's!! The SKUCE line I have traced back to Charlbury, again in the mid 1700's. Plenty of them in places like Charlbury, Duns Tew, Deddington and Balscote (my line), all related. Where they came from beforehand I don't know, although the name is said to be Cornish, and there are derivatives such as Skues, Skewis, Skuse etc. There don't seem to be many north of Oxfordshire in those times, so I am guessing they came up from Cornwall via Wiltshire and Gloucestershire etc, as I have found a smattering, but no conclusive evidence. My problem here is that earliest Charlbury records are the marriage of my 4x Gt Grandfather William SCUSE (sic) to Ann BISTER in Charlbury, 1740, no record of parents names in those days unfortunately. I guess he came to Charlbury to marry Ann and stayed. Loose ends: The marriage place/date of my Great Grandparents John Leonard SKUCE and Selina Elizabeth RANDLE The 1881 census suggests she was born in Shutford, the 1891 in Neithrop Death/burial date/place of Selina Neil
