Hi folks I'm seeking opinion on a conundrum. My Great Grandmother is Selina Elizabeth Randle who married John Leonard Skuce. According to FreeBMD she was born Sept 1857 in the 'Banbury' district and married March 1881 also in 'Banbury' district. In the Census's she is listed as being born in Shutford where her family were Plush Weavers. in 1861 age 3 she is with her parents William and Elizabeth. However, after a visit to Banburyshire study centre and scanning through all the paper transcription books, especially Shutford, I can find neither her birth or marriage! William and Elizabeth are listed as born in Coventry and Shutford respectively, and again I couldn't find their marriage, though I accept it could possibly have been in Coventry. So... any thoughts as to why I can't find Selina's baptism and marriage? Thanks Neil
why not buy the birth and marriage certs. as they will give you her parents names? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Neil Grantham" <[email protected]> To: "Banburyshire List" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 6:15 AM Subject: [BAN] RANDLE of Shutford > Hi folks > > I'm seeking opinion on a conundrum. > > My Great Grandmother is Selina Elizabeth Randle who married John Leonard > Skuce. > > According to FreeBMD she was born Sept 1857 in the 'Banbury' district and > married March 1881 also in 'Banbury' district. > In the Census's she is listed as being born in Shutford where her family > were Plush Weavers. > in 1861 age 3 she is with her parents William and Elizabeth. > > However, after a visit to Banburyshire study centre and scanning through > all the paper transcription books, especially Shutford, I can find neither > her birth or marriage! > William and Elizabeth are listed as born in Coventry and Shutford > respectively, and again I couldn't find their marriage, though I accept it > could possibly have been in Coventry. > > So... any thoughts as to why I can't find Selina's baptism and marriage? > > Thanks > Neil > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > The online Northamptonshire marriage strays index has just been updated. > Now nearly 7,000 marriages are included. Hi Neil, Here is her baptism listed in the OFHS Banbury Methodists PR's; 21 Apr 1859 RANDLE Selina Elizabeth d William & Elizabeth of Shutford born 27 Jun 1857 So they were Methodists and therefore were not listed in CoE PR's. They may have been married at the Reg Office and not at a church, so you may want to purchase the cert you found the reference numbers for. Hi Neil, I'm sure one of these families would of attended a 'Chapel/Meeting' rather than the parish Church. Maybe you need to look at Methodist/Presbyterian/Quaker/Baptist chapels in the local area. Shutford (& the weaving trade) would have used Swalcliffe/Sibford parish also - both villages had quite a large Methodist & Quaker following. But that said, if of either faith they could have used any of the chapels on the local Methodist/Quaker curcuit (that could easily cross county borders) Looking through the Ancestry census returns lots of SKUCE say they were born Banbury area. Local parish church regs don't confirm that 1881 census living at 1 Windsor Terrace Banbury, civil parish Neithrop John Leonard Skuce 24 yrs born Bodicote Selina Elizabeth Skuce, 23 yrs born Shutford 1891 census -- Living civil parish of Wroxton John L Skuce, 33y, born Bodicote Selin E Skuce, 32y, born Shutford Clara Eliz. 9y, born Neithrop Millicent Mary, 7y, born Shutford May Fanny, 4y. born Bodicote Winniefred, 2y, born Bodicote Thought I'd check Wroxton regs - could be a reason they were there - here's hubby noted. Baptism 10/8/1856 @ Wroxton SKUCE, John Leonard so Eli & Hannah of Wroxton Mill 1901 census SKUCE, Millicent M, 17y, born Shutford, servant with the Riley family, Grimsbury parish - no 2 Middleton Rd. SKUCE, Clara E, 19y, born Banbury, one of 18 servants living with the Whitbred family at The Mansion, Southill Park, Beds. SKUCE, Eli born Balscott & Hannah born Farndon Warks are still living in Wroxton.
