I'm a new subscriber to the Banbury list (but a 2-3yr veteran of other lists and I run a free genealogy search site) I'm currently researching a new line of my family tree - trying to trace details of the following from the Banbury area. I specifically need assistance at the moment on: 1) Thomas Stanton baptised Dec 1831 Banbury..possibly to a George and Mary? Any detail appreciated 2) John Edward Elston: 1871 census a retired farmer aged 44 at Broughton Road, Nuthrop(?), Banbury together with his niece Emma Ann Whalesby/Walesby (and another niece Harriet Mundy). He and his niece Emma were born in Northants. Any information on them prior/post 1871 appreciated. Anyone with parish records helping me with more information on these would be much appreciated! Anything I can do in return will be done! Thank you Jo www.genogold.com
Hi Jo I think I may be able to help with your Thomas Stanton. I have him amongst our family which subsequently became Canal folk and moved to Birmingham and further North. As you say his parents were George (1811-1882), a boatman, and Mary Ann (Dicken.)George seem to be from Adderbury where his parents, George(also eventually a boatman) and Hannah were married in 1809. I have her maiden name as Hannah Pain Coleman though where that originates I'm not sure. For me the pain is that I cannot locate george's birth! although a lot of Stantons are around in Adderbury before that, so I guess there is just a gap here and since I understand that there was a Smallpox epidemic in Adderbury in 1764 it may not be surprising that a few records are missing. Best of luck Roy
