He cld have worked for Samuelsons, ie engineering, he could have been a well driller, he cld have been an ag lab, operating a drilling machine, he cld have been a driller at the ironstone quarries !!! All possibilities worth thinking about - I'd go for Samuelson's !! --- On Mon, 22/6/09, rosalind <rosalind@jmb3400.plus.com> wrote: From: rosalind <rosalind@jmb3400.plus.com> Subject: Re: [BAN] What was a driller in... Percy Thomas Roberts ch 05/07/1889 Banbury of Thomas , blacksmith b. 14/05/1852 & Emily Owen ch 24/10/1854 Chippie : he is NOT the Percy found in 1911 with widowed mother Maryanne - that's his cousin , also a Percy , ch 1891 . He marries Edith Annie White in Banbury 25/04/1908 . I think they then have a child , James b1909 . He probably fights in WW1 with Bucks & Oxon Regt. In 1911 , his parents are at home in Banbury with youngest children . I've recently visited Exbury Gardens to research a brother of my Granddad who worked there as a gardener. 1881 Census shows him as a gardener lodging in Exbury age 28. The 1901 census he and his wife and 3 sons, the eldest also a gardener plus a servant living in the 'Gardener's House'. Living at 'Exbury House' in 1901 is GODFREY B SAMUELSON age 37, Electr Engineer, Employer, born at Banbury; wife Ann, young son & 3 nieces. Also 11 servants (2 French, 1 Swiss, ! Irish, the rest all from England). I checked birth and 'B' = Blundell, Sep qtr 1863. A Godfrey Blundell Samuelson married Ann Jane Davis, Newton A. Sep qtr 1887. In a book "Our Exbury" (A H Holland & Edmund de Rothschild) Exbury Ho was sold by the Mitfords to Colonel J Forster in 1879 whose two sons were killed in WW1, the estate was then sold to Lionel de Rothschild c1919. From this information it appears that G B Samuelson was residing in, rather than owning the house. Possibly, if he came from the Samuelson family engineering company he may have been demonstrating some of their machinery or working the land. If any one can enlighten me on whether Godfrey was a relation of the family (ie Son), the identity of Ann, wife, and any other info on Godfrey, I would be very grateful. I think my Richard Middleton would have been working for the owner (Forster). The Middletons moved around but there were family connections in Banbury and it's possible that Richard knew (of) Samuelsons. I hope this is of interest to those who were mentioning Samuelsons on the question of Rosalind's "Driller". TIA. Regards, Maureen, Milton Keynes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "M HOWES" <m.m.r.howes@btinternet.com> To: <eng-banbury-area@rootsweb.com> Sent: 22 Jun 2009 22:38 Subject: Re: [BAN] What was a driller in...
