    3. I have a copy (somewhere!) of the 'Index of Probate Records of Oxfordshire 1733-1857 and the Oxfordshire Peculiars 1547-1856' published by the Oxfordshire Record Society. 3. As previously stated, from 1858 wills are held centrally. Prior to that will's were usually proved and held at the diocese that covered the area where the deceased lived. Bits of "Banburyshire" could come under Worcester (now the Worcester Records Office), Oxford, (Oxford Records office) or Lichfield. I'm not aware of any records office having an online index but the ones I have contacted are very prompt at responding to queries. Wills which referred to property in more than one diocese could get proved at the archbishopric level of Canterbury or York. Canterbury (PCC) wills are held at the National archives and can be searched online. Oxford family history society have a project to make oxfordshire-related Wills available on line. http://wills.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/ There is one GILPIN - James, recorded as a witness in 1761. There are no DAREs Ancestry.com have a reasonable set of probate indices for some counties but not all, and not all entries are recorded for the counties that they do have. 3. Hi Rosalind, Only 2 William ROBERTS in the index: farmer, Hampton Gay 1810 farmer, Noke, 1842 - neither look like they are yours. No Elizabeth ROBERTS Possible Mary ROBERTS: widow, Banbury, 1740, Bond (not a will) Pec.21.33; Pec.50/4/2 7 John ROBERTS, but only one in Banbury: Banbury 1790 Bond. Pec.21.131; Pec.50/4/47 Source: the 'Index of Probate Records of Oxfordshire 1733-1857 and the Oxfordshire Peculiars 1547-1856' published by the Oxfordshire Record Society. Copies of the wills can be obtained from the Oxfordshire Records Office - http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/oro The British Record Society have published an index to the earlier records, but I do not have access to them. (Probate records of the courts of the Bishop and Archdeacon of Oxfords, 1516-1732, 1981 & 1985) Good luck, Rosemary Northumberland UK Email: rosemary@rprobert.co.uk Family History: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rprobert/ Banburyshire Website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~engcbanb/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ rosalind wrote: > Rosemary , > Could you look up any possible probate entries under the surname of ROBERTS > ; they lived in Banbury , and were blacksmiths , please ? > William (1) wife Elizabeth , bap 1708 & last child 1744 . > William (2) wives both Marys , bap c1737 , dies post 1785 ? > John , wife Mary , bap 1779 , dies post 1813 ? > Some of them were non-conformists . > No certain record as yet of their burials . > > Many thanks , > Rosalind . > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Rosemary Probert" <rosemary@rprobert.co.uk> > To: <eng-banbury-area@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Sunday, June 14, 2009 12:29 PM > Subject: Re: [BAN] Wills > > >> I have a copy (somewhere!) of the 'Index of Probate Records of >> Oxfordshire 1733-1857 and the Oxfordshire Peculiars 1547-1856' published >> by the Oxfordshire Record Society.
