    3. Hi folks a few more details to what Richard has found himself - think he is lacking with actual dates/places. Do any of you connect with this LAMB family? Angela:>) ............................................................................................... Angela Thank you very much. Very quick potted history is as follows: ""James Albert Lamb (born Mar qtr 1855 Chipping Norton 3a 571) married Sophia Shrimpton (born Jun qtr 1857 Banbury 3a 613) in Sep qtr 1877 ( banbury 3a 1077). Their children were Albert H ( b Sibford 1878), Ernest W (b 1879 Hook Norton) Jane E ( b 1880 HN d 1883) Walter J ( b 1883 HN) George H ( b 1886 HN) and James Albert Lamb( b 5 Oct 1887 HN died 13 Apr 1917 Arras France and is buried there - he was my grandfather). Jane Elizabeth died Sep qtr 1883 Banbury 3a 457. James Albert (snr) 's father was a George Lamb born 1834 in Great Tew and he married a Charlotte Grimmet (also b Great Tew 1828) in Dec qtr 1854 ( Chipping Norton v3a p1112) They had four children, the eldest being James Albert ( b 1855 Great Tew) then three daughters ( Charity b1860, Elizabeth b 1863 and Caroline b 1867all born South Newington) James Albert Lamb snr died 1890 (Banbury 3a 554) and then Sophia appears to have had more children .. Edwin Thomas Lamb ( b Dec qtr 1891 Banbury 3a 8?0) Elsie Green (sic) Lamb ( b Sep qtr 1895 Banbury 3a 923) and Maud Eleanor G ( sic G for Green?) b Sep qtr 1898 Banbury 3a 981.. source is mainly 1901 census and FreeBMD. ( I am getting the birth certs for Edwin and Elsie just to find out who the father may have been as James had died too early .. I do note that the 1901 census shows a Thomas Green 43 yrs old b Swerford res in Hook Norton and an iron ore quarryman!) Sophia married Alfred Cannock in Dec qtr 1900 ( Banbury v3a p1910) when she was about 44 and he was 32. They lived in Over Norton and the 1901 census shows only James Albert jnr and the three new children as stepchildren to Alfred Cannock living at home. Of James Albert's five sons, in 1901 four are not living with/near Sophia and Alfred, the new stepfather - Albert is now 23 and a gunner in the Royal Artillery; he is boarding at the Bell Inn, Hook Norton - Ernest is 22 and a platelayer's navvy and is shown as a visitor( boarder?) in London - Walter is 18 and a painter-house restorer and is also boarding at the Bell Inn, HN with his brother - George is 15 and an agricultural labourer boarding in Bruern ( Abbey) village 6 miles from Over Norton. George Lamb,Sophia's father in law, is shown in 1901 as living alone in Swerford aged 68 as Charlotte had died in 1897 Certainly after my great grand father James Albert died in 1890 Sophia's prospects were not bright - being only 35 years old and having five sons under the age of 13 with little income and very few assets. And she ended up with a husband in 1900 much younger than her and not much older than her eldest son! Good on her I say. Also for what it is worth, James Albert (jnr) is shown on the CWGC website being buried in France 1917 and his son ( James William Harold Lamb b 1911 d 1946 and my father) is also on the site and buried in Fulford York - I have done searches for Sophia's other sons on that site with little success. My mum grew up near Hull and returned to York in 1945 with my father who was not well having spent all the war in the Middle East. After four years of post war privation she immigrated to Perth Western Australia in 1950 with my sister and me. She never married again and knew virtually nothing of my father's family; she is still alive at 97"" All this information is very new to me, Angela, and having being exposed to northerner Yorkshire all my life ( dales moors cricket and ale), I find this new " banburyshire" southerner background very refreshing indeed! Thanks again and any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers .Richard James Lamb R J Lamb lambikins@ozemail.com.au
