I remember seeing him in the winter of 1940 at his shack near Tadmarton. He used to write messages in the snow if he wanted something and the villagers used to get it for him. I was supposed to keep away from him but I was fascinated by him and couldn't! Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)

    3. Richard, Following on from this message from Barb re the baptism on 20 May 1861 of a Charity LAMMB daughter to George and Charlotte, although there is not a record of the baptism of George himself in Great Tew, there are the following two illegitimate baptisms recorded: 10 November 1835 LAMB John illeg. s Charity 2 April 1837 LAMB William illeg. s Charity. There is also the baptism of Charity herself on 23 August 1818 d of William & Catherine, lab. Given that Charity is a relatively uncommon name in the baptismal records of Great Tew, it might be worth bearing in mind. I then had another thought and checked the 1851 census of Great Tew and bingo I found George. The only thing that doesn't fit is the Christian name of what I assume to be his grandmother. In the baptisms, Charity is definitely recorded as the child of William and Catherine, as is the Abraham shown in the census below. However, the census shows her as Chrisa and the parish burial records show her as Christina?? (buried 18 April 1857 aged 85 years). Anyway, here is the census record: HO 107/1732, folio 600, page 18 Great Tew Chrisa LAMB Head Widow 79 Ag Lab widow Cornwall (I think - the copy I have is very faint and difficult to read) Abm LAMB Son Mar 29 Ag Labr Oxfordshire - Great Tew C LAMB Dau in law Mar 19 (Cant read her place of birth, but in the PR Marriages she is shown as Charlotte) George LAMB G Son U 18 Ag Labr Oxon - Great Tew Willm LAMB G Son U 14 do do A LAMB G Daur 1 do (Shown in parish records as Ann Eliza d Abraham & Charlotte) Hope this adds to your information.
