Hi all, With Richard's permission I'm fwd'ing his mail to list. I'm sure some of you will be able to offer Richard some valuable advice or information to help him get settled into his new hobby :>) Thanks as always folks Angela co admin Banbury ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ms Allen Thanks very much for your info and offer; but let me explain first...I am very new to family history and did not know the word " banburyshire" existed until last week. However I do like puzzles. I am researching my father's people ( Lamb) with virtually zero family related knowledge. I live in Canberra Australia and being a new amateur , I think I am doing this the hard way. I use Free BMD and crosscheck via the GRO indexes on microfiche here in our National Library plus subscribe to the 1871 81 91 censuses via ancestry.com. Any good lead with a GRO index I order a certificate from ONS ( what a service , I only wish we had something similar). But to your info. I knew sparsest details of the marriage via the above method ( GRO Banbury v3a p1077) and indeed have just ordered the certificate to find more about Sophia; James Albert the husband ( and my great grandfather) died in 1890 and Sophia was 35 yrs old with five boys at the time ( all Lambs) and had three more children between 1891 and 1898 ( fathers unknown) before snaring a toyboy in 1900 ( an Alfred Cannock 32 yrs) who was just older than her eldest son. So in my tyro way I became quite fascinated by her survival instincts and indeed still am. Brickwalls? A new term to me but I think I can guess. Yes I do have some. No 1 ..I know George Lamb was born in 1834 in Great Tew and married in Dec qtr 1854 ( Chipping Norton v3a p1112) a Charlotte Grimmet( b 1828 Great Tew) Any leads on his or her forebears etc would be useful as I cannot get much before 1837 from here via the internet. No 2.. Any further info on Sophia (Survivor) Shrimpton would be useful... did she have more children with Alfred Cannock.. what was her background etc.. I know she was born June qtr 1857 ( Banbury v 3a p 613) No 3.. James Albert and Sophia had five sons - Albert b 1878 Sibford, Ernest b 1879 Hook Norton Walter b 1883 HN , George b 1886 HN and James Albert ( jnr) b 1887 HN ...the last was my grandfather and I now know of his details ( he was killed 1917 in Arras).. of the others I know nothing So Ms Allen thanks again for your help .. and before I get too verbose I should finish ...except to observe that I find it amazing that this small family of Lambs spent nearly a century being born, working and dying in such a small area as " banburyshire"; The censuses shown they moved over time between villages ( Great Tew, Sibford-Swalcliffe, South Newington, Hook Norton, Over Norton) but not far at all by our standards. Cheers . Richard James Lamb R J Lamb lambikins@ozemail.com.au
