I am researching the POTTER family who lived in Epwell. Daniel born Epwell 1780 who married Mary JOHNSON in 1805 in Oxford & and again in1806 in Shipston on Stour. He worked there as a tailor until he died in 1844. His father was William (1749 - 1824) who married Mary ALLEN in Oxhill in 1772 before returning to live in Epwell. He was also a tailor and possibly a Church Warden or Sexton. His father was Richard POTER who was born c1715 - believed to have been 'a tailor from Banbury'. Richard married Elizabeth HIDDIN in Epwell in 1740. Elizabeth died in 1744 and Richard fathered nine children - one in Stretton in 1746 and the subsequent eight in Epwell. The mother was Hannah DYER but I can find no marriage record. Neither Richard or Hannah have a birth record in Epwell or Stretton. I have struck a brick wall regarding Richard's Parentage and would appreciate any help. Bob Potter in Tasmania

Bob In the Oxfordshire Protestation Returns , ( 1641/2 ) I can see : Deddington : Richard Potter Milcombe ( Bloxham ) : Richard the elder and younger ( also Philip and Robert ) Tax Assessment Milcombe : Philip 5s4d and Richard 6s3d. Hello Bob, No baptism in Banbury for a Richard POTTER between 1710 & 1721, I'm afraid, but interestingly there is a Daniel POTTER, Malster, who marries in Banbury in 1716, has one child baptised there - a William in 1716 - and then no more children baptised in Banbury. Also using the information Rosalind found for you, no baptisms for a Richard POTTER in either Bloxham or Deddington in the same timescale. There is a marriage at Banbury for a Richard POTTER, Tailor, to an Ann MOSS but this is on 2 September 1782 and they are both described as of the parish. Hi Bob There is also a baptism at Epwell for the following .. 13/5/1804 Daniel so Daniel & Margaret POTTER, private baptism Daniel bapt 29/10/1780 @ Epwell so William & Mary POTTER the likely father? But this wouldn't fit with your marriage of a Daniel Potter & Mary Johnson in 1805 & 06 Then theres this marriage @ Banbury 16/2/1716 Daniel POTTER of Tadmarton & Elizabeth GARRIT by lic. Bob , There is a John Potter , churchwarden , in Tadmarton in the 1641/2 Protestation Returns , along with John jnr.& Thomas .
