    2. M HOWES
    3. Ha ha - one last one, just for Halloween !!     Probably the most tragic tale of an Oxford ghost is that of Rosamund the Fair. King Henry II was deeply in love with the Nun who lived in Godstow Nunnery, which lies on the opposite bank of Trout Island. It was built in 1133, and was consecrated in 1179 by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of King Henry II. It is said that the King kept his concubine in a secret garden that was protected by a labyrinth and guarded by one of his knights. The knight held the end of a silver thread which lead to Rosamund. The Queen was very jealous and killed the knight, stole the thread and when she caught up with Rosamund killed her by making her drink from a poisoned chalice. Now Rosamund haunts the Trout pub Wolvercote. She is often seen as a shadowy figure sneaking around in the awnings.     --- On Sat, 31/10/09, irhuckin@aol.com <irhuckin@aol.com> wrote: From: irhuckin@aol.com <irhuckin@aol.com> Subject: Re: [BAN] Ghost Stories ! 2. Jon Malings
    3. Clare Aston, or Aston Manor, is a significant part of Birmingham, so much so that in the 19th century it was a separate entity. It's Aston Manor because much of it is part of the estate of the 15th Century Aston Hall which still stands right next to Aston Villa football ground. It's how they came to get their name I 've always supposed. But we won't get into Football. Many people from the surrounding countryside migrated to Birmingham/Aston for work in in the 19th century. People were a lot more mobile than we might imagine (thanks to trains) so Daniel could easily have gone from Aston 1871 to Biggleswade 1881 for work reasons and happened to find a wife too. But it was also a tradition (and still is for some) that people would get married in the brides family home so even if they had met in Aston (or elsewhere) they might have gone to Biggleswade to get married. 3. I use ROOTSMAGIC to store my Family Tree - obviously places where I have found events are recorded in the Sources along with the actual reference and details of the wording for each event. I also use the first place I come across somebody for the actual source for that person, subsequent sources are then added to specific events. This way I can always tell where the person originally came from. It also has the ability to add TO-DO lists on either individuals or Families which can then be printed out. The difficult bit I suppose is recording where and when you have looked at a source and not found the record you where expecting. SInce this is a negative but as time goes on may need to be revisited in light of any new information. Kevin

    3. Thank you so much Bob for your very kind offer.  That would be wonderful to get a picture, fingers crossed that there is a stone. I don't know too much about these two individuals, but what I have is: John Ratley, born c1834, was a general servant in Banbury in 1851 census for a family (John Walshaw? Nealshaw?).  He married Emma (born c1836) in Banbury 1855 and had three children, Daniel born 1856, George and Clara.  I have them in the census of 1861, 1871 and in the 1881 census widow Emma with daughter Clara.  Daniel married in 1881.  The one individual I am specifically following is Daniel.  Unless I'm reading the census incorrectly, which is entirely possible, I believe in 1861 the family lived on Horse Pool Lane which I believe is now Union Street but I could be wrong and in 1871 Daniel was living with a family in Aston or Aston Manor (?)  I don't know why Daniel ended up in Aston 1871 (which I think is south of Banbury on a google map) instead of staying with his family in Banbury and I don't know how he met his wife who was from Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, which looks like quite a distance on the map in terms of finding a bride in 1881. According to the Banbury Town Council his father John was buried 8 May 1877 and Emma died in Union Infirmary in January 1922.  I would welcome anyone's suggestions on finding further particulars on the family, and specifically on Daniel.  I should mention that he eventually left England for Canada in the late 1880's, where I have picked up his trail.  It's his life in England that I'm having problems with. Thank you. Cathy __________________________________________________________________ Looking for the perfect gift? Give the gift of Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/gift/

    2. I use an Excel spreadsheet, with columms for the item, the repository, and my notes. After I've looked at the item, it goes into a seperate page in the same spreadsheet, which is my research log of things I've already looked at, and which has an additional column for the results. Having a column for the repository is helpful, because if I'm going to a repository, I can sort on that column, and pull up everything for that location. My genealogy program (The Master Genealogist) also has a research log utility that connects the research tasks to the individual in the database, but I found a simple spreadsheet worked better for me. 3. As someone has pointed out, the list is quiet at the moment, so I thought I would throw this problem into the ring. I have had sooooooooo many different types of "to-do"lists over the years. Every one of them seemed like the solution to my perennial problem of keeping track of what I wanted to do, or to find, or to check the original, in different libraries, sources, books, films etc etc etc But none of them has stood the test of time. The problem as I see it is: 1. I have loads of possible sources to look up 2. They are in a wide variety of places and 3. Answers sometimes turn up in places I unexpected So - how do you keep track of what you want to do? How do you make sure you keep those lists up-to-date? Kind regards, Rosemary Northumberland UK PS. Dawn - I have received your messages re your website - has my 2nd response got through to you? 3.  Banbury Harriers and Athletic Club was formed in 1881 and took a leading part in sporting activities in the town at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The club had a gymnasium at the Corn Exchange, but in 1902 moved to Crouch Street British school. The club ran a Whit Monday sports meeting which was attended by champion walkers, runners, and cyclists from all over the county; German bands, Italians with organs and monkeys, and keepers of dancing bears added to the entertainment on those occasions.
