We have found the above information in the Akeley, Buckingham, parish registers. Does anybody know when Sarah died? There's a possibility that Thomas remarried to an Elizabeth by 1808. Or maybe there are two Thomas Blackwell's in the area at that time. I am trying to figure out which. Can anyone help? 3. Hi Rosemary, Here's a start for Phyllis ........... Elizabeth may have 'died' in Banbury but she is 'buried' in Chipping Warden - so it will be recorded in C.W. PR's I have taken a digi pic of Elizabeth's grave which I will send you later to pass onto Phyllis - headstone reads .......... *IAR of Elizabeth beloved wife of William Death who departed this life December 11th 1868 aged 47? years* But then if William (found by Brenda) in the NJ 1880 census was the husband of Elizabeth -from the dates we are working with she would have been 14 yrs older than Wm - possible I know! If Phyllis does not have a marriage for Wm & Eliz. -- probably that was also at CW & she was of the DOUGLAS family, as her grave is surrounded by DOUGLAS family members -- a big CW family name. I don't have the records for CW - but COBS holds them - will try & look in the week for further info. Would Phyllis like to join our group?? 1. I've been converted !!!
    2. A statement like that could apply to many things - but I never expected to use it within the context of Ancestry.com - but I find that I must. I had spent many frustrating hours trying to find my maternal grandfather and his family on the govt's 1901 census site (I knew who he was and I knew who his parents were - but I didn't know whether I'd found all of his siblings) but without any success at all - despite using wild cards and every possible spelling variation/transcription error that I could think of. Result: nada ! So this morning I thought I would take the opportunity to try Ancestry using the new Gale log-on that so many on the Lists have been talking about. Result: instant success !!! And yes there were a couple of sibs that I didn't know about. So what can I say except Hooray for Ancestry. John Plester. Researching: PLESTER, JOINES, and TAPLIN, in OXF and BUSH, and CLARKE in WAR

    1. Re: [BAN] DEATH Family
    2. Gary & Brenda Anderson
    3. Rosemary, I've had a snoop around for this lady and her family. I found her and her husband Henry Benjamin in Paterson, NJ, in the 1880 census. They had a young son, Henry T. Benjamin (jr?). (Year: 1880; Census Place: Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey; Roll: T9_795; Family History Film: 1254795; Page: 67C; Enumeration District: 153; Image: 0136.) I also looked her up in the 1930 census for New Jersey, and sure enough she is there, age 69, widowed, born in England. An important fact is that she emigrated to the US in 1872. I thought this seemed a bit young for her to come on her own. Working on the theory that perhaps she came over with some rellies, I had a look again in the NJ census for any DEATH family. Sure enough, I found a William DEATH, age 45, and his wife Margarett, age 40, both born in England, and also living in Paterson. (Year: 1880; Census Place: Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey; Roll: T9_796; Family History Film: 1254796; Page: 364B; Enumeration District: 167; Image: 0512.) Could this be Nellie's father and stepmother? This might give someone more information to work with. Hope this helps. 1. Re: Eliza
    2. Sorry! In the interests of historical accuracy the title should have read "Eliza: Fifty years on". Len

    08/13/2004 10:51:48
    1. Thought you might like a follow-up to Eliza's Christening
    2. Eliza: forty-six years on. Eliza sat at the oilcloth-covered kitchen table, her hands clasped around her cup of tea. The kettle hissed gently on the black kitchen range as drops of hot water escaped the ill-fitting lid and dropped upon the hot metal. The oil lamp flickered and, had there been anybody to notice, they would have seen the light reflected in the tear that rolled slowly down her cheek. ‘What am I to do now?’ she thought. It was a bleak prospect. She had been sixteen when she left her job as servant to John Wilkes, the butcher in Hook Norton, and moved with her father, mother and her sisters to Kilburn in North West London. Life had become very hard in North Oxfordshire for her father William Wheeler and her mother, Mary, and she remembered the excitement as they all made plans for a new start in the big city. Alas things soon went wrong. Her father died soon after they moved and left his Wroxton born wife Mary to cope with looking after the five girls. Everybody did what they could. Mary took in laundry and the older girls went out as servants. Another source of income came from taking in a lodger. That was how Eliza had come to meet and wed William Denham, a cooper, who had taken their room to relieve pressure on his own family who lived a few streets away. It was a pity that their parents didn’t approve but they were married anyway at St James’ Church in Westminster and nobody noticed that William had lied a little about his age and she didn’t care anyway. They were in love and a girl had to take her chance when it came and she had been past twenty-five years old. Love or no love, she had soon realized that she had stepped out of the frying pan into the fire. They had produced six children over sixteen years and nobody knew how many that could have been. Her training as a servant had stood her in good stead when looking for work but pregnancies and looking after the family had meant taking employment as a charwoman. She had spent so much time cleaning for other people it left precious little for her own home. Not that there was much of it to clean. And now William was gone. She had seen it coming as his chest got worse and worse but it was still a blow. Young William, her eldest, was married now but he could not be expected to help. He had a wife and three young daughters to look after and living in one room, too. Rebecca was all set to get married next year. She was a good girl and it was not fair to stand in her way but she would miss her. That would leave her with the other four boys. Still, ‘God’s good’, she thought, ‘if he don’t come he sends. And sitting here feeling sorry for myself won’t get me anywhere. I’d better get those beds made a bit sharpish’. Ian &Rosemary: Please use if you wish. Len

    3. Thanks folks, you came up trumps there! To respond to some points: Bill:- Thanks for the MIDWINTER's, Amy's marriage to Isaac WEBB in 1868 suggests she was born around 1847, but no bap. entry in Kirtlington. As a boat family, I know well what that means, she could have been baptised anywhere up the canal, though most seemed to return to a particular parish for this, but not exclusively. Denise:- I did know the RANDLE's came from Coventry, a cousin of mine who is a descendant of Millicent SKUCE (mentioned elsewhere in replies - see also below) had some information on them, they were in the Weaving or spinning industry around Shutford Barb: I have Millicent and Mary SKUCE recorded from the Methodist records, they were two of my Grandmothers sisters. Mary died as a child, but Milly as she was known, moved to Crowhurst in Sussex. I met her once when she was about 90, she was marvellous woman. The man she married, she had nursed his sick wife, and was, from what I can gather, the unofficial nurse of the village, doing many good deeds. Thank you all again Neil

    3. Dear List and Angela, My research in the area is the name HATLEY from Shutford, a Catholic family of papermakers. Lewis HATLEY, son of John and Ann ROSE b. abt 1781 In his will dated 1799 John HATLEY leaves his house in Shutford to Lewis and his blacksmith shop in Epwell to his son John Constantine. The shop was in tenure to James PRUE and Richard WALKER. Lewis must have left Shutford in the early 1800s. He is next found marrying Sarah Hooper in 1810 in South Stoneham Hampshire. He and his family then ran The Post Office there for many years, but Lewis always gave his trade as papermaker. John Constantine also went to Hampshire as his shown on deeds as having land in South Stoneham in 1815. John was also a papermaker. I would to hear more about this family and the local history of Shutford and papermaking in that area at the time. I also have the tree and my notes to pass on. Thank you. Best wishes, Chris. -----Original Message----- From: Spencer Allen [mailto:angela-ban@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: 11 August 2004 10:12 To: ENG-BANBURY-AREA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BAN] What is this list for? --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. My particular area of concern. The GILBERT family. John GILBERT of Boddington had four known children. Elizabeth bap 1688 Thomas bap 1690 Alice bap 1692 John bap 1697 James GILBERT (m Ann CLUES 1759) of Boddington had two known children. John born abt 1756 James bap 1759 It is my hope (alright then, belief) that James was the son of a child of John. For those still with me, the father of James (born abt 1734) was possibly Thomas (b1690), John (b1696) or another brother. Or someone else entirely. All candidates have three days. Use both sides of the paper. Smokey Checked by Norton 2004 before transmission with Mozilla Thunderbird
