    3. Hello list, As a Canadian volunteer, I wanted to inform you about a number of very worthy website projects that are under way to commemmorate those fallen in all wars. The Maple Leaf Legacy Project, for Canada, at http://www.mapleleaflegacy.ca/ , The British War Memorial Project, at http://britishwargraves.org.uk/ , The Australian War Graves Photographic Archive, at http://www.australianwargraves.org/ , and The New Zealand Armed Forces Memorial Project, at http://www.nzafmp.org/ . Numerous volunteers from all over the world are going out to photograph the graves of every known war grave to be put up on the internet for the benefit of those relatives who for whatever reason can not actually visit those graves. This is an opportunity for those relatives to see their loved one's final resting place or commemoration. A grave photo of anyone fallen in war can be requested at no charge, but a donation will be requested. Remember these photos are obtained at no cost, and these projects are run from the generosity of others. Please visit these sites for more information, and contact the emails provided if anyone is interested in helping out. Thanks! Lest we forget, Dolores Maycock-Jones

    1. Remembrance Day
    2. Helen Verrall
    3. Friends Those of you who live in England or any of the Commonwealth Countries will know 11th November is Remembrance Day. The day when we recall the Men and Woman who died defending " Freedom". The day being chosen as the Day that Peace was signed between the Allies and Germany at the 11th hour of the 11th Month 1918.The end of World War I. In conjunction with Rosemary's Page on the Banbury Website I invite those of you who lost family members to post a memoriam to them, between 1st and 11th of November . They do not have to be Banbury born or bred. For those who are, a permanent record will be placed on the Banbury Web Site. I commence with two members of my Family who died during World War II, Private James Joseph HALWARD 766591, 123rd Bn. Canadian Infantry ( Central Ontario Regt.) who died of wounds Aged 35 yrs On Sunday 28 May 1916 Son of Joseph and late Arabella HALWARD, Cannington, Ontario. Born Cannington , Ontario , March 19 1881 Interred -Cannington ( All Saints) Anglican Cemetery. (James' Parents, were both born in Birmingham , WAR, but Joseph Halward was raised in Griffin's Brook, Selly Oak. They married there in 1873, prior to emigrating to Cannington Ontario.) Clement Walter NASH born Selly Oak , WOR, 10th June 1907, Son of Lottie and Walter Nash, of Lower Hutt, NZ ( previously of Selly Oak) Died Woodbourne Air Base, Blenheim, N Z, September 1943 ,of Meningitis, while in training with RNZRAF- had enlisted to defend the land of his birth!! Left a wife and 3 young sons. I end with a delightful tale of Allies remaining friends. At least I think it delightful.:-) A friend of my daughter's, about 5 years ago, was Nannying in the US , and she taught the 5 and 7 yr old the NZ National Anthem. Bless their hearts, she took them to watch the Memorial Day Parade and when " God Bless America " commenced, they trilled, "God of Nations at thy feet etc ..." Nicky nearly passed out with embarrassment, but an elderly gentleman leaned over and said " Its all the fallen we remember not just those of us in U.S. of A " She asked him for his address and arranged for her parents to send a NZ Flag to him, he rang her when it arrived and told her he'd wave it next Memorial Day. Lest we Forget ! Helen New Zealand Temp. List Administrator.

    3. These are two members of my family who lost their lives in World War II, Able Seaman Leslie Vicor HARRIS (C/JX 186836), aged 23, lost at sea 15th February 1941, in the North Atlantic, he has no grave and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. In 1940 Leslie survived the beaches at Dunkirk when he was one of the naval personnel assigned as crew aboard one of the "little" ships. Segeant Stanley Roy HARRIS (1256507), aged 30, 12 Sqdn. RAFVR, navigator on Lancaster shot down on the night of 3rd/4th February 1945 whilst on a raid to bomb a benzol plant at Bottrop. He is buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany. These were the sons of William Henry and Minnie HARRIS of Southall, Middlesex and were two of my father's elder brothers. William, whilst not born there, grew up in Hook Norton from the age of 2, this being the village where his father Henry HARRIS was born. For the sake of completeness the full crew of Stanley's Lancaster were: PILOT : Flying Officer John Llewelyn WALTERS RAAF (Aus/426931) (killed) CREW : Sergeant James Moffatt GIBB (flight engineer) (1825597) (killed) Sergeant Stanley Roy HARRIS (navigator) (1256507) (killed) Flight Sergeant William BLYTH (observer) (1250558) (killed) Pilot Officer Keith Oswald LANGHAM RAAF (Aus/432823) (killed) Flight Sergeant Cyril BUTLER (mid-upper gunner) (1596394) (killed) Sergeant Harry BOULDING (rear-gunner) (1686053) (killed) Regards Colin Harris ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------- For the Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again They sit no more at familiar tables of home They have no lot in our labour of the day-time They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, to the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. 1. Church Dedications - ever wondered what they were?
    2. Rosemary Probert
    3. Hi All, on a Saturday morning that hasn't arrived over the horizon yet, but the rain has! We have an amazing new page on the website this week on the Dedications of Churches (CofE & RC) within about 15 miles of Banbury, based on Genuki's parish locator. Believe it or not that includes 6 counties (just!) : Buckinghamshie, Gloucestershire (1), Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire. It's a marvellous resource already, thanks entirely to the hard work and committment of Frances Bishop, beavering away in British Columbia. The sources already tried have been listed at the bottom of the page, by county. But there are some gaps: Both in Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire we can find very few Roman Catholic Church Dedications -can anyone find the others - they must be there :-) And there are some "unknowns" - can anyone help. And if we've missed your favourite church - write to me :-))) Go to the front page and follow the 'What's New' link. 3. http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=history/other/remember The attached website is a government of Canada website. I have pasted a statement from that website which I hope will enlighten others regarding the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of those wars. Every November 11th, Canadians across the country pause in a silent moment of remembrance for the men and women who served our country during wartime. We honour those who fought for Canada - in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953). More than 1,500,000 Canadians served overseas - more than 100,000 died. They gave their lives and their future so that we may live in peace. Dennis W. 3. Hi Rosemary, In Australia yes we commemorate the fall (landing) of Gallipoli. And that is the day that we have our major Returned Soldier parades and the old diggers play their famous two up games - legally. But Australia also commemorate's Remberance day on November 11th. I can always remember sitting for my final year History Exam at High School in 1983. Which was on the 11th of November - we where still in the exam at 11.am at time all pens went down and every one stood on mass as the school band played The last Post". 3. Canada - November 11 Remembrance Day is one of our national holidays. There are solemn ceremonies on Parliament Hill (Ottawa) and in most cities, towns and villages. Even here in a small western Canadian city I have seen a Ghurka veteran in his distinctive leather hat. Poppies and Canadian John McRae's poem, In Flanders Fields, featured on http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/remembranceday Best memory from now ancient school days in a small coastal village: Gathering in the community hall, singing God Our Help in Ages Past...

USA = Veterans' Day is usually observed in honor of all 'living' veterans, while Memorial Day is to especially honor those who fell in battle, plus all dead in general, military or not. There are public parades and memorial speeches for the war heroes, while visiting Mum and Dad's grave is a private family affair. George in Pittsburgh

Was going to suggest to the list , that in the week from 4th to 11th November ( Remembrance Day ) that they may like to post a Memorial to family who died defending their country. We did this on STS List, 2 years ago- and all the tributes were collated and loaded to the Genuki STS Page. But think the permanent idea on the Web Page , preferable!! Henry married 1. Ellen STUCHBURY circa 1855; 2. Mary Pedley SEAMAN c. 1863. Henry was born in Burton Dassett, where his father Joseph farmed at Frog Hall. Henry's younger brother died young, making Henry the logical heir to any family property in Burton Dassett. I've often wondered why Henry established himself in Cubbington before 1855. Do you know of BISHOPs in Cubbington at that time frame? Henry BISHOP's grandparents were yeoman William BISHOP and his wife Mary; there is no marriage record for this couple in Burton Dassett parish registers, so they must have "come from away". Their children were baptized in Burton Dassett between 1743 and 1762. I'm wondering whether William the yeoman fits the description of anyone you have noted among the BISHOP family in Cubbington in the 1700s. Thanks for any help or direction. Best wishes, Frances

If you want to add a Christmas card in with it too, send it along and I will include it. £7.50 a set. £1.34 P&P UK. £3.50 P&P Worldwide. Better than Amazon can do, I can tell you!! Ian
