Mark , Thank you for your reply you said >>>> " There appears numerous connections between the Hone and Nicholls families with several marriages. The first was between Edward Nicholls and Mary Hone in 1822 at Swalcliffe." Well , ( I am very new to this , so excuse my way of presenting info ) Edward Nicholls 1798 -1867 married Mary Hone 1795-1846 after her death he remarried to Rachel Cross 1822-1902 I am descended thru that second marriage .... their child Alfred Henry Nicholls born 13/4/ 1853/4? married Emma Hilman (of Epwell ) their child Arthur Nicholls born 1/10/1887 married Ethel Francis Freeman (of Tadmarton ) their child my mother Joyce Margaret Nicholls so Edward Nicholls was my GG Grandfather but I am not related to Mary Hone so the answer is that there is a connection ....but maybe no relation Mark thank you for responding with best regards Robert Kite

Hi Robert, I found your mother's story very interesting and I was wondering if we might be related. I am tracing the HONE Family of Sibford Gower/Swalcliffe?Banbury. There appears numerous connections between the Hone and Nicholls families with several marriages. The first was between Edward Nicholls and Mary Hone in 1822 at Swalcliffe. There son William Nicholls married Charlotte Hunt. Also a Hulda Ann Nicholls married a David Hone. Also a Caleb Nichols married into the Hone family. I believe some of the Nicholls family also moved to Warmington. Are we connected!!! Mark if you go to http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchEntry and use their search facility you will find three places (in the UK) selling the book. They all appear to offer overseas delivery. When searching just put in the title, the ISBN search didn't work for me. Regards Peter Wharton

Hi Mark, > I was wondering if anyone may have a copy of or know where i could obtain a copy of a book called > "Adderbury - A Thousand years of history" by Nicholas Allen published in 1995. It was first published in hardback by Phillimore & Co Ltd 1995, reprinted 1997 A paperback edition (10 x 8'ish size) was published by Guidon Publishing, Oxford in 2002, price £15.00 (I have this copy) ISBN 0-9543617-0-9 > I believe it is a excellent book and it mentions my HONE family and has a some photo's of different Hones. Yes, it is a very interesting book, some nice old pictures & village maps, also indexed. Has a very good pic of John HONE (1844-1915) & his dog. John was one of the village carriers, obviously he done very well from this as he donated the land & a large sum of money for the building of the Methodist church in Adderbury. > So far unable to find a copy here in Australia. Are there any other worthwhile books of the Banbury district that are worth looking at please advise!!! Lots of good local books available - I should send Rosemary a list for the web site! Mark if you 'search' the Banbury list archives, query HONE, you will find 85 previous mentions for HONE. I'm sure you'll find something of interest ;>) regards Angela :>)

There are several Freeman birthdays in Grandma's birthday book. I don't know if this information would be of any help to you. My Grandmother died in 1943 so these folk may well be just in the time scale you are looking for. My eldest sister remembers them, I will see if I can get her to write down anything she knows. This would not be dates... but the sort of info that makes them into a family. Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)

Glad to hear from you Christine , I myself have not had the opportunity to do much research yet at all , just observing so far , but what I have been given by others looks like my Nicholls family stayed around Swalcliffe area at least from 1800 ... and the name is in village records from 1500's as is noted in Swalcliffe Barn Museum . Best regards to you and your mother . I would be interested to hear from anyone with info about Freeman from Tadmarton around 1900 and earlier .... Robert Kite

Greetings, Nivard. Thankyou so much for the information about my relative Reuben GOODYER. It was good of you to take an interest and look it up. Another gem to add to my treasure trove! I would be grateful for the census material you offered as I haven't got this information. My remembrance was sourced from personal recollection and from the memorablia I have. Many of the facts about the GOODYER family other than this I have received through the generosity of his half sister, ( my mother's 1st cousin ---a great lass, now deceased), and two others of their family who have done some research into their line. So your kindness is much appreciated. For anyone interested the pronunciation of his surname----at least locally, in the north Warwickshire area , was "GOODJER; not GOOD-YER! Reuben was one of thirteen children born to Henry (Harry), GOODYER, a platelayer at Newdigate Colliery, Bedworth, and Sarah Ann PEGG. There were thirteen children, most dying in infancy, and only three, all boys, surviving their childhood. Their mother died at the age of 39, in 1890 very probably worn out with successive childbearing and dispirited by losing them. Reuben was not quite 3 when she died, so his childhood was scarcely easy. Given these circumstances it is remarkable that he retained his kindly nature. We have very fond memories of him. I can't imagine such a gentle man behind a machine gun! It will be a sad day if we cease to remember the sacrifices made by the men who defended the freedoms that we now enjoy. Many lost their lives, others were maimed or traumatised. Some were gassed and led half-lives as their damaged lungs failed to cope. Young women lost their husbands or sweethearts and the chance to have children of their own. Small children never knew their fathers--or older brothers--or uncles and older cousins The dreadful carnage of the 1914-1918 War meant that a whole generation of young men virtually disappeared. How would our world, differ if these losses had not been sustained ? We will never know, and it gives us pause for thought, and reflection. Regards, Muriel.
Ohhhhhhh Ann, Think you may be the tonic I have needed to get going again! Recently moved from Banbury to Somerset - long story:>) My family research has mainly been ARIS around Banburyshire, especially Middleton Cheney, where many of the village families turned towards the Baptist faith from the parish church - due to offerings of help (money /food/clothing etc) for their families in return for patronising the Baptist Chapel. M.C has a history of glovers/shoemakers/ironstone workers/ stockingers/ag labs - at some point many of those 'bread winners' became unemployed. Some families moved, either by choice or law to places like Coventry, Leicester, Birmingham - others stayed within the parish but chose to change religion to help them survive - my family included, but who can blame them 'when needs must' & help was being offered. This info comes from M.C Baptist records re. my GG grandad (he had already been baptised in the parish church19/3/1837) *Re-baptised into the Baptist Chapel 19/8/1894 - Very shardy in his religious convictions. One child having been confirmed, another being prepared for the 23rd. All this with the idea it is thought of obtaining relief. Died after 2 years* If you check out Banbury List archives for April 2004 - you will find a fair bit of info on the WHITE/ARIS(S) marriage & how they fit into the history of famous 'Banbury Cakes' along with BETTS. (Stop dribbling at it's mention all you Banbury Cake/food lovers! *>)) Jarvis & Elizabeth's first child, bapt 4/11/1760, was a daughter named Frances (after Francis Blake?) she was buried 25/11/1760. Their 4th child, another dau was bapt 15/8/1765 - Frances also! Urban Blake was born abt 1822 and married Mary Ann Aris at Newbottle in 1840. Does anybody have any information on his ancestry ? In view of the close proximity to Kings Sutton, I wonder if he was a descendant of Thomas Blake of Kings Sutton (1763-1846) and his first wife Elizabeth King nee Norman (1762-1805) who had at least 4 known children James Blake bn 1793, Frederic Blake bp 1799, Thomas Blake bp 1802 and George Richard Blake bn and d 1804.
