Hi list could some kind local to Banbury tell me how far would it be between Brockworth, Gloucestershire and Brailes and Banbury.. I have a Thomas Hone married at Brailes in 1592 and the only Thomas Hone (spelt whone) i can locate only one possible Thomas Hone (whone) born 1567 at Brockworth - would make him 25 when he married. Just wondering if it would be possible!!!!! There was also a John Whone born at Brockworth in 1569 and I believe he will be the Johanes Whone that married at Brailes in 1600 and had a family at Swalcliffe. Also how young as anyone come across a male marrying - would 14 years be possible in 1566?????? Regards Mark G (Australia)
Hester I checked British Vital Records Index for LEATHERBARROW and find nearly all the Baptisms and Marriages occur in Lancashire - unfortunately there was not a Baptism for a Charles c 1799. The only locations that appeared in the index were Cheshire and Nottingham. Its possibly Charles may have come from further afield that you thought, have you checked the 1841 Census for that would indicate whether he was born in or out of the County! I note from IGI that an Edward LETHERBARROW married in Banbury in 1826, so now we have 2 about the same age. Also a son born to Edward ,in 1834 was baptised Charles. Possibly these 2 were brothers. Even in IGI predominance of the name is from Lancashire. Hi Everyone I was wondering if someone could help me here - with a lookup or advise. My Problem is: 3xGGrandfather Charles LE[A]THERBARROW died 11 Jul 1849 Banbury aged 50 (making him born about 1799 - where?) When he married Eliza ENDALL at Banbury (St Mary's) in 1832 it says he was a Widower. Well. .. I have the St Mary's Transcripts and there is no first marriage and also no christening for Charles. Very few LE[A]THERBARROW entries before 1800s. My question is - Could anyone who has any surrounding parish registers have a quick look and see if there are a bunch of LE[A]THERBARROW names in any of them? If there are, I am quite willing to buy the Registers, but a bit expensive to go buying them all just on the off chance of a strike. Hi Mark Great to hear from you. Well, I can tell you some about this family. I have been collecting any LE[A]THERBARROW families that have anything to do with Oxfordshire. Charles LETHERBARROW chr 25 Apr 1834 St Mary's, Banbury s/o Edward and Anne, butcher, Neithrop. (I know mother's name was Mary Anne, but I think this goes, as I have found 10 children - some have the mother Mary Anne and Some just Anne, but the father is always Edward a butcher). Charles died in Sep Qtr 1875 Banbury. Wife Sarah Ann born about 1844 Banbury. I just realised this is going to be very long, so I will send the rest to your personal email. Thanks to those who have answered so far. Maybe I should have added a bit more in my explanation. To Mo Scanlan Actually, No I do not have the 1871 census - most of the others, but not that one - would love a copy if not too much trouble. To Brian Creed As you surmise, I have looked at the IGI and agree LE[A]THERBARROW seems to be predominantly Lancashire. To Rosemary Probert Sorry, should have said that I have the non-parochial for Banbury (it even has my Mum's christening on it!) Thanks for the answer though. To Ann Johnston What is the Genforum family history site? To Elaborate on my previous question: I have Charles LE[A]THERBARROW marrying for the second time in 1832 in Banbury (Edward LETHERBARROW was the witness) - no record of him before that. There were also John LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1823 Banbury William LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1818 Banbury and William LE[A]THERBARROW (widower) in 1830 Banbury at this marriage C. LETHERBARROW was the witness and Edward LE[A]THERBARROW married in 1826 Banbury Can find no Christenings for any of the above, or any Christenings for LE[A]THERBARROW before beginning of the 1800s. In Banbury Registers only marriage was John LETHERBARROW to Esther JAMESON 18 Sep 1753 ( and their deaths, but no children! And they were in Banbury, because many times were witnesses at weddings) So, my problem is, there has to have been some LE[A]THERBARROWS around here somewhere - are there some other Registers, or would they maybe have been christened outside of Banbury? Does anybody have access to the Newbottle PRs? I am interested in all references to the surname BLAKE as I am trying to find a link between the Kings Sutton Blakes and the Newbottle Blakes. In 1801 Francis Blake of Red Lion Street Kings Sutton (1731-?), who I have quite a lot of information about, paid land tax of 11s 3d on his land in Newbottle so there is a strong possibility of a connection somewhere. Francis Blake had married at Newbottle Church in 1759 although all his 10 children were baptised at Kings Sutton Parish Church where he is listed as a churchwarden in 1765 and 1775. Thanks to all the help I have received from this mailing list in a remarkably short space of time. Ann Johnston --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. So today I bought Roots Magic which looks good. I am trying to make a Gedcom to transfer all my data from the old programme to the new one and can't seem to make one that brings ALL the data over. I have never done this before. Is anyone able to tell me how to do it please? Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)
Hello Hester, I expect you've already been through the IGI but just in case I found the following there: Charles Leatherbarrow or Brookfield chr. 4 Nov 1798 at North Meols, Lancashire, England Father---Leatherbarrow Mother Alice Brookfield This was the only Charles Leatherbarrow in the 5 years either side of 1799. I also notice that the name Leatherbarrow is overwhelmingly a Lancashire name; 95% come from there so your Charles is probably a stray and any first marriage would be up there. I hope this helps, best wishes, Brian, New Zealand -----Original Message----- From: Hester Moore <familyhistory@optusnet.com.au> To: ENG-BANBURY-AREA-L@rootsweb.com <ENG-BANBURY-AREA-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, 25 November 2004 13:41 Subject: [BAN] LE[A]THERBARROW - Brick Wall - Can anyone help, please? >Hi Everyone >I was wondering if someone could help me here - with a lookup or advise. > >My Problem is: > >3xGGrandfather Charles LE[A]THERBARROW died 11 Jul 1849 Banbury aged 50 (making him born about 1799 - where?) >When he married Eliza ENDALL at Banbury (St Mary's) in 1832 it says he was a Widower. > >Well. .. > > >Hi list could some kind local to Banbury tell me how far would it be between > >Brockworth, Gloucestershire and Brailes and Banbury.. > I'm sure you already have the answers, but I couldn't resist testing my theory that http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/churchdb is handy for problems like this. Entering the primary place name brings up that place, plus churches within 3 miles. At this stage you can change the number of miles and search again. * Distances are approximate and not all churches are included in the database. Reasons are explained. Using Brockworth as the base I expanded the search to 30 miles (see Brailes) and again to 40 miles (see Banbury). Miles ~ 0 Church of England, Brockworth [Gloucestershire] ~ 29ENE Church of England, Brailes, Warwickshire ~ 36ENE Church of England, Drayton (Banbury), Oxfordshire ~ 38ENE Church of England, Banbury, Oxfordshire Here's another feature of the GENUKI site. Clicking on "Church of England" links to a page with three map sites. Clicking on an underlined place name links to a GENUKI page offering various kinds of information about that place. For example GENUKI's Brockworth page http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Brockworth includes a link to "Research Sources for the parish of St George, Brockworth" and much more. (Wish I had ancestors there!)

Just to say Season's greetings to all the helpful people on this list. I'm unsubscribing for a while, but look forward to rejoining. By the way, Rosemary, would a list of unusual Christian names be useful? Some came up recently, on this list, which I'd never met before, and they seem to run in families. Best wishes, Jill
