    1. Mayors of Banbury - 1554-1904
    2. Wendy Archer
    3. I've recently acquired a little booklet listing the mayors of Banbury for the above dates. It's written by William Potts and his father, and dated Christmas 1904. I'm happy to look at specific time periods for listers. In particular I noticed 1589 William HALHED 1606 Thomas HALHED 1628 Thomas HALHEAD 1630 Henry HALHEAD 1646 Richard HALHEAD 1650 Thomas HALHEAD 1662 Richard HALHEAD ... following interest in that name on the list. 3. Hi, I was wondering if someone could tell me what was located at 192 Warwick Road, Banbury. I have had several family members die at this location all from different branches of the HONE family - I also noticed many other burials referring to this address. Any Ideas. Is it the address of the Union Workhouse???? thats the only thing i can think of. Mark G (Australia)

    3. Hi Angela, I'm sort of slow on the uptake here but would like to add to the remembrance list the following Canadian "boys", both of whom were my grandfather's 1st cousins: HATTEN, George Orton (754382), Private,58th Battalion (Central Ontario) Infantry, 9th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division. Son of William Hatten & Louisa Ferguson of Desbarats, Ontario. Died: Aug. 28, 1918 Age: 24(?) Buried: Vis-en-Artois British Cem., Haucourt, Pas-de-Calais, France. HATTEN, Percy (754383), Sapper, 124th Battalion, Canadian Pioneers. Son of Mr. & Mrs. John Thomas Hatten of Desbarats, Ontario. Died: April 10, 1918. Age: 22 Buried: Aubigny Communql Cemetary Extension, Aubigny-en-Artois, Pas-de-Calais, France. Canada lost aboout 60,000 men in WW1, a great loss for a country of around 8 million people.. Most who joined up were the sons or grandsons of UK immigrants. Percy & Orton were grandsons of Thomas Hatten (1820-1910), son of John Hatten & Ann Merry, who was christened at St. Mary Magdalen, Duns Tew & emigrated to Canada West in aboout 1850. Foour of John Hatten's sons came to N. America, which perhaps explains why I have been unable to find any of that name in Oxfordshire today. I have visited both graves, locatd in beautiful cemetaries. All the waste! It's so sad. And their sons & nephews had to go back & do it all over again. Thus endedth the history lesson. 2. There was a Work house in Wawick Road I remember before ww2 the tramps used to pass our house on the main Oxford Road in Adderbury with a tin with a small amount of tea and some bread they would have spent the night there and were walking on to the next one I believe they were only allowed one night. People that fell on hard times were sent there if they had no other means of support or were to ill to look after themselves and had no one else. My husband came from a large family and they all got impetigo so were taken there to get treatment he said it broke his Mothers heart. Most elderly people dreaded that they would be sent to the Workhouse which was built in 1835. By the 1950s it was used as a hospital for cases that were recuperating from an operation or not needing too much care. Even then people still thought of it as a workhouse Part became a maternity ward. A new brick building behind the main hospital called The Pines was bult for isolation cases mostly for children with scarlet fever.and later still in the 1960s for t.b. cases. A few years ago it was all finally knocked down to make a home and housing for the mentaly disabled. This is my memories and what I have quickly managed to find about banbury Workhouse. A book on Banbury Published Victoran Banbury 1982 and one last year by Brian Little gives a somwhat sketchy detail of this subject and how it was involved with the poor law in the 19th century. best wishes rhoda

    2. Geoff Parrish
    3. I don't know if there is still any difficulty in getting through to the GENUKI Church Database but it might be worth trying an alternative source of information for distances between churches. The website http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ includes links to an excellent "Parish Locator Program" which provides a very useful downloadable piece of software which will plot churches within various ranges as well as giving distances. Best of luck, Geoff Parrish (No, it doesn't just locate MY relatives !!)
