    1. Christmas Day
    2. Port and lemon and Ginger Wine. The only drinks us kids was allowed! A tanner in the pud was enough for a bag of sweets to last for the first week back at school. Visiting my grandparents at the farm, which was a 2½ mile walk. All my cousins there too. Their parents had cars, but my Dad was not allowed to drive because of epilepsy, and Mum didn't take her test until she was 45. An ostrich for lunch (well, a 25-30lb Turkey anyway!!) on the big day of course with fresh veg from the garden and Grans special stuffing that tasted so wonderful, but gave everyone the most awful wind!! Served cold for Tea with pickles and salad with crusty bread spread thick with butter. Trifle for the sweet-toothed amongst us. Then we would play cards or a new game we had in our stocking. That was then. I hope to recreate some of that this year with 19 of my family for Xmas lunch. I don't grow veg, but the rest will be there. The tanner will be 20p and the ostrich will be a 15lb turkey crown. I suspect with my stuffing, the wind will blow as then too!!! Ian

    2. Why do pirates always have West Country accents? Why is abbreviation such a long word? What's another word for Thesaurus? Why do Americans park on a driveway and drive on a parkway? Why is there only one monopolies commission? Closer to Home, why is the swimming bath in Park Rd and the Park in Bath Rd? Where do people in Coventry send their persona no gratis? Pardon my Latin! Why is it that everyone I see taking sugar in tea and coffee is skinny? Ian

    2. WHAT WENT WRONG? Christmas is nothing now older people say, Not like it was in our young days, When pennies were saved from here and there, To provide us with our Christmas fare' Puddings, cakes, and mincemeat made well before, Needing time to mature. Carols and Church for the glory, Of the oft told Christmas story, Our few presents some homemade, Always kept secret till Christmas day, We would wake on that special morn, Long before the light of dawn, To feel a stocking at the foot of the bed, Had santa really been with his sledge. We out grew the legend ithe end, But it was still fun to pretend, Cos it was part of Christmas day, We would not have wanted any other way, Christmas is nothing, dont you agree, Without belief, love and mystery. In message <0I8D00D65N6E23@smtp1.clear.net.nz>, Carole <caz@clear.net.nz> writes >Does anyone have any customs that they followed, or remember as children, in >the lead up to Christmas? > Hi Carole, Oh Yes! Magical times they were. Lots of great ceremonies! Watching the making of the Christmas puds and being given a stir and told to make a wish. Watching the mincemeat being made and queuing up for a share of the juice which leaked out of the mincer and was collected in a bowl underneath. Tasty that was. The decorations went up on Christmas Eve, we all helped and we had REAL candles on the tree. Mum would ceremoniously light them when it was all finished and she did this every day throughout the 12 days not leaving it for a second, of course, while they were still lit. She usually timed it so that Dad would see them when he came up the road from work. We still have many of the original tree decorations and they all go on every year, even now. A plate of Mince pies and a bottle of Ginger wine were left on the table for Santa Claus when we went to bed.... in the morning only crumbs were left. Christmas stockings carefully labelled with out names were left out also when we went to bed and in the morning had magically filled with all sorts of things but the most important was the orange, apple and a shiny new penny at the bottom of it. The Church choir came round the district and sang carols in the road. Wish it was still like that. Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)

    3. HI gang, On my reading of the Rootsweb information about the list it would apply to anyone who is researching within 20 miles of Oxfordshire, which means that any of my searches 20 miles or nearer to the GLS-OXF border count. I am interested in places like Lechlade, Ciren, etc. Is this correct, please? Is this what is intended? Phil.

    3. Len Thanks Heard of blackmail :-) But seriously I am enjoying being with you all, the memories I find poignant, and even though in most cases far from where my family resided, gives me a vivid picture of England in the years of my childhood. Our family used to send food parcels to our English family and I thought , as a child, that it was because they were poor, but of course my later history studies taught me differently. But you my friends have really opened my eyes as to what it was like.
