    3. My interests in Banburyshire concern the GILBERT and the BERRY families. James GILBERT married Ann CLUES in Boddington, Jan 1759, producing two known sons, John (c1756) and James (c1759). All my known GILBERT ancestors came from John, nothing is known of any James successors. A provisional working theory is that James (father to John & James) was a grandson of John GILBERT, who is recorded in Boddington with four children, Elizabeth (c1686), Thomas (c1690), Alice (c1692), and John (c1698). Students may take notes at this point. Several miles away, William BERRY and wife Ann in Aston le Walls were raising John (c1761), Thomas (c1784), Hannah (c1786), William (c1789), Rebecca (c1791), Jane (c1793), Martha (c1795), and Harriet (1805). All my known ancestors can be blamed on Thomas, who married Hannah FARMER in Chipping Warden 1805, but subsequently lived in Appletree or Cropredy. Nothing is known of any BERRY fruit from his siblings. Any details about William and Ann would be most welcome. Conjunction came in Coventry, Aug 1865, when Thomas Henry GILBERT (b1846 Brinklow) married Ann BERRY (b1843 North Aston). Young Thomas, no fool he, married the boss's daughter in a basket and hamper business. -- Joe Confirmed virus free by Norton 2005 before transmission with Mozilla Thunderbird

    2. Still looking for where Edward was born around 1796. Dough cakes? Is that not a posh name for lardy bread (cake). If so, here's a simple recipe: Make bread dough and kneed well. Flatten out and spread a generous amount of lard onto two-thirds of it. Add lots of caster sugar (granulated is OK, but caster works better). Fold as you would puff pastry and flatten. Do that three or four times and it layers up. Brush with milk and sprinkle with a bit more sugar. Allow to rise in a very warm room for an hour and bake at 170C (350F) for about 20-25 minutes until the top is sticky and just short of burnt. Cut into nice sized squares. Gooey, fattening, bad for you, but delicious! Will keep for about 30 minutes once the hoards have a taste! If you can keep them away, eat within two days and never refridgerate. Pork lard is best (home-made if you can get it), but I suppose veggie lard would do. Never tried it though. Ian

    2. Hi Angela & Listers My list is hardly a list at all! I share an interest in WHEELERS (with my Cuz Angela). My brickwall concerns Thomas WHEELER b.1775 in Deddington son of Thomas & Anne. "Young" Thomas married Ann and they had their first child Martha in 1797 in Deddington and their second child Elizabeth in 1800, also in Deddington. The family appears in Swerford with the baptism of William in 1810 and then Thomas in 1815. It seems unlikely that they remained in Deddington with no further children before moving to Swerford and starting again in 1810. So where were they? Who was Ann, wife of "Young" Thomas? They do not appear to have married in Deddington (or Swerford) and the only 'possible' marriage in IGI seems to be Thomas WHEELER to Ann ALLIBONE 14 March 1797 in Pillerton Hersey (Warwicks). However the Pillerton PRs say that Thomas came from Combroke. Could he have moved from Deddington to Combroke, married Ann at Pillerton Hersey, gone back to Deddington then somewhere else before settling in Swerford where he was with his son William in 1851? Anny suggestions or information VERY welcome. Len

    3. Hi all, Re previous post (Thumb twiddlers) It's New year, we always have a 'roll call' for names/brickwalls & any research interests at this time. Previous 'list lurkers' are especially encouraged to participate:>) Any chance some of you can post your requests - just to update us 'long time' members, (who will otherwise just get fat on 'Dough cake/Banbury cakes' swapping recipes, while our research material gathers dust ;>) & of course so all our newer members can see we do actually have 'gene interests' *>) To start the cake - sorry, ball rolling - my research includes ......... ARIS/WHEELER/YOUNG/BULL/WATTS/GASCOINGE/HAWTIN/ HERITAGE plus others - all so far from around Banburyshire, apart from YOUNG which comes from Antrim, Ireland. Time span I'm stuck with is going back from John ARIS married Mary BULL @ Middleton Cheney 7/11/1785 - need Baps & parents for them Maybe then I can connect to other ARIS/S researchers & join another link in the long chain George YOUNG son of Charles YOUNG & Mary DUNLOP born/bapt 18/7/1880 Antrim, Ireland - siblings? any other info a huge bonus! Who's next to tell their's ........... PLEEEASE! Angela:>) Admin Banbury list

    3. Thank you for that, Bill Watson! So the question now is ... why would a jewellery be moving around between Banbury and Birmingham. I can see my next research is going to have to be in eighteenth century occupations in Banbury! I know there was a lot of jewellery/buttonmaking/bucklemaking going on in Birmingham. 3. Hi Sue & all, You don't say Sue if you have an occupation for Thomas Moreton. Birmingham/Coventry/Leicester areas have had family connections with 'Banburyshire' over many years, but occupations do feature quite strongly for the 'possible reason' as does the time span of interest Also if Thomas was originally from Birmingham area - & the family had fallen on hard times, maybe they could have been ordered back by the parish they were living in - around that time many places were struggling with the ever rising costs of those families claiming 'poor relief', (after the enclosures of common land) Banbury very much so. Hard times for those that needed the most help! - but for the parish overseer - a job 'well done' if he could remove a family & the price of keeping them from his own parish -- they then became someone elses burden! Another alternative for the family was the local Workhouse:>( But as you say 'speculation' at this point. Come on all you other list *thumb twiddlers* lets have a response. Thomas did send me a psychic message that he was fond of kippers and doughcakes, but I think Martha used to smoke the kippers herself, and whomp up a batch of doughcakes - she spurned anything you could just buy in the supermarket. 3. Herewith my two cents worth. I am researching WRIGHTONS, brick wall after my GG-Grandfather David, no confirmed parents. The BORTONS also of Aynhoe, Nthnts. back to GG-Granfather William and the PROFFETTS (various spellings) of Sibford Ferris in Oxon. Cannot find confirmation of the parents of Mary wife of David Wrighton. Their marriage cert. has her father as Henry and her baptism in Swalcliffe names her mother as Sarah but no connection to any family I can find. I will be travelling for three months after 19th Jan. so will go silent until May. Barbara Adair in Ottawa.

    3. Hi Angela and list members, My primary interest is in TAPLIN from Bloxham and surrounding area. After a couple of years of researching other families and a move from side of Canada to the other, I discovered your list and thought that I would lurk until you asked for the roll call. I'm now trying to put together a database of early TAPLINS in Oxfordshire ( pre 1800) in order to determine the origin of the family that settled in Bloxham.. If anyone comes across references to early Taplins in other areas of Oxfordshire, I'd appreciate the info. I'm also researching LYNES from Adderbury; TAYLER from Bloxham; EMBRA and BULLER. 1. Brickwall - Gaden or varient
    2. Hi everyone, Happy new year to all!! My main brickwall is Ursula Gaden. She was born in Burmington in 1873. After being orphaned in 1876 she went into Ashley Down oprhan houses in Bristol a little while after. I have her admission and dismissal records. She was sent into service in Wales in Dec 1890. I have an entry on the 1891 Welsh census and then nothing. Interestingly on that she has added an illegible middle name. I have her baptism, birth and orphanage records there is never any middle name on any of these documents. Her brother Amos William was my gt.grandfather, her sister Sarah Ann I have information on but Ursula seems to have totally disappeared. The only possible I found in 1901 an Ursula Bunting appears not to be her as her marriage details have a maiden name of Hone!! Any help of advice would be very welcome. My main line of research is Gaden and varients. Earliest being Richard Gaden d.1697 in Tysoe. Can't find his birth or marriage to Frances, but I live in hope, something draws me to Banbury. Thanks Diane

    3. Angela ... Thanks for the encouragement ... My One and Only Brickwall is ... GEORGE TIMMS born circa 1837 in Oxfordshire ... hometown unknown but ...through the process of eliminating all other George TIM(M)S by marriages or death ... we are left with one each from either Banbury or Cropredy. I can follow their lives up to marrying age but then lose them. Mine "married" (can't find their marriage either) Eliza BILLS of Tipton, WOR, in Dudley, WOR. He was a canal man when they married. I found her on the 1851, 61, 71, 81 and 91 censuses ... and he on the 71 and on up but not the 1851 or 61. If I can connect mine to either the Banbury or Cropredy George Timms I'd jump back three or four more generations. Any help out there? George Timms Tkac, USA
