    3. Hi Angela & all Listers, Do you have any INNS connections in your family trees. I am one of four inns descendants who are collectively keeping a database of INNS (with some INNES). We have family trees mostly starting in Bucks, Oxon and Northants and my own family tree traces a path from Preston Capes, thro' Charwelton and Wardington to Sibford Gower. We would be pleased to exchange information on any INNS family connections you may have in your family tree. My brick wall is in Preston Capes and the origins of Thomas Inns who married Sarah Smith in 1777; take a tour around the Preston Capes village web site where a large slice of Inns Genealogy was derived from our database. My next task is to re-visit Wardington and research a outlying family link from INNS to WALTON to FENNEMORE and then WATTS; can you ever look in Wardington's past without finding a connection to the Watts'. If that sounds too familiar, I went to school with a Thomas Watts and worked with a Ted Watts! Best Regards, Alec J Inns ex Banburian living in Abingdon

    2. Dorothy Gibbs
    3. Hi There, Sorry Guys I posted this earlier to the wrong list, so it is possible some of you may already have seen it! I wonder if anyone can help with this family? My GGGgrandfather William GIBBS married Mary BRADLEY at Broughton Church on Feb 13 1776. No ages were given. Both were simply said to be of this parish. Mary was buried at Broughton on Sep 25 1799... no age was given William was buried at Broughton on Mar 29 1832, his age was stated to be 84yrs. So William born about 1748... but where? Mary I don't even know where to start..... Their children were born at North Newington. Any ideas anyone? Dorothy -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK) -- Dorothy Gibbs (in Hertfordshire UK)

    3. Hello Hester - > This may not be strictly Banburyshire, but I was hoping someone may be > able to tell me where Mongewell is/was in Oxfordshire. Not Banburyshire at all :-) About as far away in Oxfordshire as you can get! Go to www.ofhs.org.uk , and follow the maps link. Download the parish map - you may well find it helpful. Of relevance to this list is that it extends about 2 parishes deep into the contiguous counties. Mongewell's in the grid 7B. Registers from 1660. While we're on parish maps of Oxfordshire, there's actually another one on the same site - interactive - fun -name a parish, and it lights up in red! Go to the home page again, then Search Services, and 6 lines down there's a link to an interactive map. Lots of words, and a link to the actual map at the bottom! -- Wendy OFHS baptism index coordinator

    2. Ann Johnston
    3. Hi Margaret I haven't yet found any conclusive link between my Blake ancestors.and Urban Blake (son of a George Blake) who married Mary Ann Ayriss at Newbottle Parish Church in October 1840. Circumstantially my direct ancestor Francis Blake (1731-? ) of Winslow and Kings Sutton was a witness at the marriage of his brother-in-law Jarvis White (1732-1787) of Newbottle and Banbury to a widow Elizabeth Ariss at Banbury in 1760. Francis Blake's son Thomas Blake (1763-1845) married firstly in 1791 at Kings Sutton a widow Elizabeth King (1762-1805) and secondly in 1812 at Avon Dassett, Beatea Fessey (1786-1856) the mother George Fessey Blake (1808-1872), Fanny Blake (1813-1894) and Matilda Blake(1817-1881).. From a transcript of the Kings Sutton Parish registers it appears that Elizabeth King's maiden name was possibly Norman. I can't actually find my referance for her first husband's name . 3. Do you know anything about the George Wyatt of Kings Sutton Ag Lab (bn abt 1854) who married Fanny Maria Bray (bn abt 1859). In 1881 they are living in Whittle Street with 4 small children George (3) William (2), Elizabeth (1) and Henry (2 mths). By 1901 George Wyatt descibes himself as a farmer and is living in Red Lion Street with Fanny William now aged 22 and 2 younger children Cicely(17) and Edith (6). Fanny Bray was the daughter of Daniel Bray (1837-1887) and Emma nee Blake (1838-1901). The Blake family had strong links with the Methodist Chapel in the village. 1. Roll Call: HORWOOD of Banbury
    2. Heather Olsen
    3. Hi all, Another family I am researching is that of William and Mary (MULLIS) HORWOOD of Banbury. William was a brewer's clerk. They appeared in the 1851 census with William's brother in Warwickshire, and in the 1861, 1871, 1891, and 1901 censuses in Banbury (I haven't been able to find them in 1881). They were married in 1850 in Wappenham, and had the following children: Mary Lydia, bap. 1852 Banbury, died an infant Frances Ann, bap. 1853 Banbury, was a governess in Wroxton in 1871, a sister of mercy in St. Mary's Home, Buxted, Sussex in 1891 and 1901. Mary Eliza (twin), bap. 1855 Upton on Severn, Worcester m. 1879 Banbury (Christchurch Parish) to John George Morrey. I have not been able to trace this couple after their marriage. William Henry (twin), bap. 1855 Upton on Severn, died an infant Arthur William, bap. 1856 Upton on Severn, with his parents in 1861 and 1871, no further record found. Martha Xaviera Mary Chuick, bap 1858 Banbury (Christchurch Parish) with parents in 1861 and 1871, no further record found. Henry Ernest, bap 1860, with parents 1861, 1871, a grocer's traveler in Glocester in 1881, with parents 1901, married his cousin Lydia Strange in 1903, still in Banbury in 1924 directory. Alfred Edward, bap. 1863 Banbury, died an infant I'd appreciate any info on the death/burial of William and Mary, and any info on what became of the children I haven't been able to trace. Thanks, Heather

So where were they? Well, this seemed like just the sort of request for which the OFHS Oxfordshire baptism index is being compiled - I'm coordinating volunteers' efforts for the project. Details of searches are under Search Services at www.ofhs.org.uk . So I had a look. Indeed in Deddington baptisms there are: 1797 WHEELER Martha d Thomas & Ann 1800 WHEELER Elizabeth d Thomas & Ann But then I think you may need to reconsider your notes. Swerford baptisms for offspring of Thomas & Ann are: 1803 WHEELER Maria d Thomas & Ann 1805 WHEELER Anne d Thomas & Anne which all runs fine. You referred to William 1810 & Thomas 1815. They are offspring of a *William* & Anne. Hope that doesn't cause too much havoc with your tree! Swerford is on CD CN-01 from OFHS if you want to browse it. > Who was Ann, wife of "Young" Thomas? Yes, I see Thomas with William in 1851, Ann having been buried in 1848 age 75. The marriage is not on the Oxfordshire OFHS marriage index. Had you looked at the 1841? 1. Roll Call: STRANGE family
    2. Heather Olsen
    3. My main interest is in the STRANGE family, which originated in Mixbury in the 1670s but eventualy spread all over Banburyshire and to lots of other places as well. Some particular brickwalls I'd appreciate some help with: John Strange (a farmer) and his wife Elizabeth (Shaw) were married in 1786 and settled in Harbury, Warks, where they had six children. They then moved to Wardington in about 1800, where they had two more children. After the baptism of the youngest in 1804, they appear to disappear without a trace. They aren't buried in Wardington, and I haven't found them anywhere else. I have picked up most of the children in adulthood, but don't know what became of the parents. If anyone runs accross a burial for either of them, or any evidence of their presence in or absence from Wardington after 1804, please let me know! William Strange, a farmer of Shalstone, Bucks married an Ann about 1747. If anyone finds the marriage of a William and Ann in this time frame, please let me know. John Strange of Mixbury married a Joan before 1673. They don't appear to have been married in Mixbury. Unfortunately, the records of several nearby parishes (Turweston, Evenley) do not survive from this early date, but if anyone finds this marriage in one of the other parishes in the area, please let me know. Thanks, Heather

The marriage occurred in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Daughter Susan GAMMAGE (marriage record shows birth place as Banbury) came to Canada in early 1900's and married Henry James COLLINS in Victoria, British Columbia. Oxon, Clifton near Deddington is another place which appears in some of research on Gammage. Dennis Edmonton, Alberta, Canada >

    1. Re: [WAR] Re: [BAN] Roll call for all members - Angela (WHEELER of Swerford)
    2. Hello Wendy Thank you so much for your response to my posting re the WHEELER family. You said: So I had a look. This amazed me because although it is some time ago that I set out on the WHEELER trail I could not understand how I could have missed Maria AND Ann. I then recalled that at one time I was bemoaning the fact that I could not find William b 1810 in the Swerford prs until Angela put me right and found the entry. So I had a look at my Swerford microfiche (OFHS) and I discovered TWO blocks of baptisms for the period covering 1800-1810, one lot including Maria, Ann & William and the other not so! Which leaves me relieved that I had not lost my marbles and very grateful to you for finding the 'missing' data. Would it be worth putting a warning slip in copies of the Swerford prs on microfiche to save others slipping on the same banana skin? You referred to William 1810 & Thomas 1815. They are offspring of a *William* & Anne. Hope that doesn't cause too much havoc with your tree! Hopefully not. I do not believe that William and Anne existed (as parents of William & Thomas). If you look at the entry in the Register you will see that it appears that the father's names for William WHEELER and the next entry the COOPER twins have been transposed. This seems to be confirmed by the 1851 Census entry which shows Thomas WHEELER (father) living with his son William. I suspect that the same mistake was made with Thomas but there is not the same supporting evidence in his case. However it seems unlikely that a William & Ann dropped into Swerford for the birth of Thomas and then disappeared. (Whilst I have accepted this explanation for Thomas, Angela I know is more cautious and has a question mark over this). > Who was Ann, wife of "Young" Thomas? They do not appear to have married in > Deddington (or Swerford) and the only 'possible' marriage in IGI seems to be > Thomas WHEELER to Ann ALLIBONE 14 March 1797 in Pillerton Hersey (Warwicks). > However the Pillerton PRs say that Thomas came from Combroke. 2. Spencer Field
    3. I am also another list lurker. I am looking for the origin of Samuel FIELD of Thame. He married Mary CHURCHILL (o.t.p.), of Deddington, in Deddington on Jan 20, 1774, by licence. Wittnesses: B....CHURCHILL, junr; Ann HENCHMAN; Eliz. BUTCHER. Samuel FIELD died in Thame in 1794 (May-June) and in his will was described as a Tanner of Thame. I have not found any mention of his age at any time. He left his three minor children £500, £600, and £500, and his wife Mary the balance (unknown amt.) His descendants lived around Deddington, Banbury, and Thame for a few generations. Mary is mentioned briefly in a book "The Churchill Chronicles" as "who married Samuel Field, a tanner of Thame and Witney" His wife Mary died at Thame in 1832 and in her will she mentions " with the consent in writing of Elizabeth Field the neice of my late husband Samuel Field who now resides with me and of my daughter the said Philippa Hedges and of the survivor of them". Then in the will of Elizabeth Field, spinster of Thame, in 1843, Elizabeth mentions the following ----- "I give to my neice Frances Collyer wife of John Collyer of Birmingham " " I give to each of my Great Nephews John Brooks and Thomas Brooks the sons of my late niece Mary Maria Brooks deceased" " To my Nephew William Field son of my late Brother Thomas Field deceased" " to each of my nieces Maria Field and Sarah Ann Field daughters of my said late brother Thomas Field" " to my nephew William Bott Field son of my Brother William Field" " I give all my plate to my niece Elizabeth the wife of Thomas Brooks of Birmingham grocer" " unto and equally between my three nieces Ann the wife of the Reverend John Hillyard the said Elizabeth the wife of the said Thomas Brooks and Caroline Woodhill the wife of Josiah Cox Woodhill of Birmingham, Factor" I wonder if he would have had to serve an apprentiship as a "Tanner" and might there be records and where? A family story was that he was originally from Warwickshire. However, without any age, at any time, it is difficult to pick which Samuel Field in Warwickshire is the correct one. Any help or sugestions finding more information and birth/ancestors of Samuel FIELD is greatly appreciated. Spencer Field Calgary, Canada.
