Thank you Angela, Shawnna & Judy for your advice on the CD roms, it's always good to ask! I take in what you say about the state of some of the original registers! I've just had 2 films out from the LDS and most of the pages were so bad, I suppose they were covered in mould? I couldn't even tell if the records I wanted were on the film. However, considering how old the books are and they were probably just stacked in an old, damp cupboard, we really are lucky to get so much info off them. We've all heard the "horror" stories of how they were sometimes "recycled"! Anyway I just gave up in the end, (spoiled computer brat!) that's when I thought about buying the CDs. I'm sure the few mistakes in the transcripts don't take away from the great resource these good people have given us. My order is in & I'm eagerly awaiting my little parcel. Thank you so much Judy, they sound like they're just what I need, I thought that is what they'd be but wasn't sure. What a great resource the teams of volunteer transcribers have made available to us! A big thank you to them all!! Hi Barbara Most OFHS cds are a very useful resource to purchase - much credit due to the transcribers. To be able to research from the comfort of home also has many benefits. However there are problems with some parish records OFHS have put onto cd format. Some have information missing from the indexes, so as Shawnna suggests - don't rely on the indexing. Some are almost impossible to read at certain points - ie you may be able to pick up on 2 letters of a 7 letter surname. Not very helpful for those that don't know for certain who, what & when they are looking for in a parish. Wendy Archers opinion is that the scanning of fiche to cd lost resolution. But having identified a need to resolve this problem on OFHS cd's - appropriate action to rectify the situation would be discussed by OFHS. That was December 2006! I haven't heard anything further on those comments - Wendy, Hugh? Hi Judy and Barbara, I used those materials in their book form at Banbury Library a couple of times when I was in the UK and found them very helpful. But a caution - the transcriptions are not perfect; I found a few errors, in particular, don't rely on the surname indexes; if the name you are looking for is not on the surname index, search your desired village anyway - I came up lucky doing that. All the same, a great resource; what an important job all these family history society folks do for all of us! Another irrelevant detail about Whitsun. There is a chain of islands in the Oz Barrier Reef called the Whitsundays as they were first sighted (by Captain Cook I presume0 on Whitsunday. Whitsun, or Whit Sunday is the 7th Sunday after Easter. Also known as Pentecost. When I was young the Monday after Whit Sunday was a public holiday but has been superceded by the fixed date "Spring Bank Holiday" in UK...well England at least...and in Ireland too, though the Irish holiday is a week later than the Engllish one. Fantastic Bill, just great. Thank you so much for talking the trouble to look all of this up. So the two older boys were indeed Franklins...but they were noted as Spencer on later census and so likely their families have that name today. This I don't understand: 1 Oct 1862 " Thomas s " Mary Anne " > privately. present - mother, ? GRANT, Mary LOCK, Emma FRANKLIN. received > Whitsunday 1872 Are you saying that Thomas Spenceer son of Richard and Mary Ann was privately baptised in 1862...and that present at the baptism was a _____ Grant and the Aunt, Mary Lock, and that Emma Franklin was received on Whitsunday 1872? Mary Anne had a sister Emma Franklin born abt. 1818. Does "received" mean a late baptism or a confirmation or??? What a great help, thank you for all that..more than I expected to receive. Yes, Mary Ann (the mother), ___ Grant, Mary Lock, & Emma Franklin were present at Thomas' private baptism. He must have been doing poorly when born. Thomas got better and was received into church on Whitsunday (whatever holiday or date this is) 1872. That is what is noted on his entry. 10 years later??? a year after his sister was baptised (not private, so must have been in church) This is the first time I've seen the names listed. The clerk must have wanted to know who witnessed the baptism for some reason. Sorry, I now understand Bill...it means..present at the private baptism of Thomas, son of Richard and Mary Ann, were Mary Ann the mother, unknown Grant, Mary Lock the auntie and Emma Franklin sister to Mary Ann and also auntie to little boy Thomas. He was received on Whitsunday 1872. Sorry for not understanding at first. Isn't that unusual, to name the people present at the baptism? I think so. So thank you again Bill, I really, really appreciate your looking for this and sending it along.
