Forgive me if this request is off topic. I have a photograph of three ladies dressed in Victorian clothing, and their identification depends on the date the photograph was taken. My somewhat tenuous excuse is that the picture was taken in Cropredy and that they are members of the Berry family. I do not have a website, and know photographic attachments to the group are a big no-no. Among our illustrious band are there any experts in butterfly wings, lace collars and cameo broaches who would be prepared to assist me in dating what looks like three generations of a Cropredy family? My grandmother Norah May TUSTAIN was born 22 OCT 1872 in Aynho, her father was George TUSTAIN of Barford St Michael and I have his family back as far as 1768. . George TUSTAIN died AUG 1893 in The Red Lion Inn, Market Square, Deddington, and I am wondering if that is now the Deddington Arms Hotel? Her mother was Sarah TAYLOR and her family goes back to Mollington c. 1748. Her mother was Mary METCALF and I have traced her family through Farnborough to Fenny Compton and Radway c. 1741, and maybe Bishops Tachbrook c. 1676. Her mother was Sarah COLES from Ratley where I have her family c. 1700. Her mother was Mary GRAMMAR of Wardington, and her father was Joseph GRAMMAR from Middleton Cheney c. 1700. Mary's mother was Elizabeth ROGERS of Wardington and her family goes back to a marriage in Cropedy in 1673. Elizabeth's mother was Mary PRATT of Warkworth b. 1676 and this is where it gets difficult because her mother never gets a mention! She is even buried as "wife of William" and one of my hopes is that the Hearth Tax may mention her. However, is Warkworth in Northamtonshire or Oxfordshire for the Hearth Tax of 1660s? I have traced the PRATT family through wills back to 1500s in Wardington and if any of the above information is of any interest to anybody I am happy to share and compare. Cheers, Lesley, (Perth, Western Australia.)

Dear List From the 1841 census John COUNCER was living with his family at Hardwick House Neithrop Banbury, and in 1851 aged 53 years he was living at Hardwick Farm Neithrop Banbury on 456 acres employing 13 labourers. Could anyone tell me please if any buildings or farmhouse still exist at this place? Many thanks Jennifer Geelong Australia

Hi Jennifer I checked other parishes in Banbury area without success and then tried the National Burial Index. Between 1830-1840 there is only one entry for Elizabeth TUCKWELL. Aged 49, buried at St Peter, Peterstow, Herefordshire on 25 August 1834. I suspect she was too old to be your girl? Len

Dear Janet Since I asked a few weeks ago if Elizabeth TUCKWELL could be buried at Banbury, I've now found that her family, the COUNCER family, lived at Bloxham. Elizabeth TUCKWELL was nee COUNCER. Is Bloxham covered by this Banbury list or should I go somewhere else? I wonder please if you are able to see if Elizabeth TUCKWELL nee COUNCER may have been buried at Bloxham between 1836 and 1838. Her Father was George COUNCER (1771 - before 1841) and her Mother was Ann nee SALMON (1771 - before 1851). Is anyone else perhaps researching the COUNCER family? Many thanks I hope this is not asking too much. Jennifer Geelong Australia >Many thanks for trying Janet. The name Hall goes back a long way in Bodicote as churchwardens see BHS vol 12 "Parish Accounts of Bodicote" Too many to mention. If you obtain a copy of "Faith Hope and Charity- The Story of Bodicote Church and Parish", by George C Walker you will find a photo of workers at Usher's Steam Drug Mills 1929. There is mention of Mr and Mrs R. B. Usher living in Bodicote Cottage, High Street. She was confined to a wheel chair and died in 1962. Perter Usher acquired the rhubarb business in 1811 on the death of Dr William Hayward who started it in 1777. I obtained a copy from Mr Walker 53 Oxford Road, Bodicote OX15 4AB Phone 0295 263322 in 1995. You might try to telephone. There have been articles in Cake and Cockhorse over the years about the rhubarb industry. There is an index to articles on the Banbury Council website although I've never used it. I may have tried, but with no success. Angela, I don't know if you already have this information, but according to the OFHS PR Transcriptions, Peter USHER, b, dissenting minister married Rebecca WARD, sp, minor, both of the parish, by licence on 10 July 1797. He looks as if he was a Presbyterian Minister as the following baptisms appear in the Banbury Presbyterian records: 21 July 1802 James Francis USHER son Revd Peter & Rebec. of Banbury 14 August 1804 Peter USHER son Revd Peter & Rebec. of Banbury 14 July 1806 William Rufus USHER son Revd Peter & Rebec. of Banbury According to the 1841 census of Bodicote (HO107/875/4, folio 9, page 10), There is a Peter USHER, aged 60, a Rhubarb Merchant, not born in the county, living with a James, aged 30, born Oxfordshire. I can't find Peter in the 1851 census, but it looks as if the James in the 1841 census is in the District Workhouse at Neithrop in the 1851 census (HO107/1734, folio 570, page 10) described as an unmarried Gardener, aged 47. According to all census records, Francis HALL was born circa 1837/9 at Brailes, Warwickshire. In the 1851 census he appears as a Grocer's apprentice in Banbury, in the 1861 of Banbury he is described as an unmarried Grocer's Shopman, in the 1871 census of Souldern he is married to a Louisa Ann (Lucy Ann??) and is described as a Grocer, in the 1881 census back in Banbury with wife Lucy and children Joseph, William, Francis and Albert and in the 1901 census of Ramsgate, Kent as L:etting Apartments living at 17 Royal Crescent with wife Lucy . In the 1841 census of Brailes (HO107/1131/3, folio 27, pages 16/17), there is a Francis HALL living with parents Joseph (a Glazier) and Esther and siblings Sarah, Ann, William and Mary at High Street who could perhaps be your Francis. HTH. Janet

To Rosemary and Janet Thank you both for your information. Both are going to be of help. I did know briefly about Cornelius but news about him and family in Camberwell is great as my Savorys come from there, also Walworth, Islington and all close areas. This sounds like a connection I have been hoping for. I know there is a Frances on one side of the family and my aunt was probably named after this one. John and Mary have all the signs of the witnesses but would not be the same John who was in the Witney Workhouse in 1881. I thank you both for what looks a promising lead to more branches of the Savory family. Happy hunting to you all. Best wishes, Maureen Milton Keynes. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janet Booth" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 24 Dec 2007 11:55 Subject: Re: [BAN] Savory > Maureen, > > Further to what Rosemary has found out, there is a Cornelius SAVORY and wife > Elizabeth who had two children in Kidlington 1826 & 1827 and then > disappeared from Kidlington transcripts.
