LaDoris--Here is what the book says on pp. 141-2. BTW, only 100 copies of the book were printed. The Ellis Cousins association has a copy that members can borrow, and it is also possible to get a microfilm from the Family History Library (Mormon Church). "In 1773 (Deed Bk. E, p. 192), Henry Ellis (Sr.) sold to William Ellis, land on s. side of Tar River, adj. Ham, Forbes and others. Wit.: James Lanier, Wm. Baldwin, Lucy Ellis. Lucy Ellis not identified. This William is not a son of Henry Sr., may have been a nephew, son of an unidentified son of Benjamin II from Surry-Sussex and Southampton Cos., Va. Subsequent deeds show close association of this William with members of the Lanier family; probably, William was a brother of Michaell Ellis, a taxable in 1762 (b. 1746 or earlier) in home of William Lanier. Not known whether William and Michael were related to the Lanier family; it is known that a number of Lanier families lived in Surry-Sussex and had some associationwith the Ellis family there. "This William may be the William Ellis shown on p. 334, "Roster of N.C. Soldiers in the American Revolution," as one of five men of the Ellis name who served from the Newbern Dist., two others being Capt. Henry Ellis, and Shadrach Ellis (son of Henry). As shown under Item (ii) of par. 3 above, Shadrach Ellis served in Capt. John Hodge's Co., Vols., under Col. Benj. Seawell of N.C. Regt. of Militia. William Ellis of Pitt Co. was also in this regiment, as shown in Certificate from the War Dept. filed with an application for membership in the DAR in 1915; the application was approved and the applicant admitted to membership. (Nat. No. 103110). Those papers stated that William Ellis, b. in Virginia, 1755, died after 1812 in North Carolina; married (date not given) to Elizabeth Stanton, also b. 1755 in Virginia, died in North Carolina. The papers mention one child only, Delthia Ellis, who was married to Lemuel deBerry. Supporting documents not available to us. It may be mentioned that we have seen published information indicating that others claim descent from William Ellis, Revolutionary soldier from the Newbern Dist. (not a DAR case), and said to have died 1805 in Georgia. (See par. 4 of summary of William Ellis of Edgecombe Co., N.C., Son of Joseph and Faith Ellis. Documentary proof not available to us). --David David B.
