    3. A person wrote to a list asking for suggestions for organization or storage of data. You probably have many suggestions on how to store genealogical data. I have piles to get hole punched and put into my notebooks, but have already stored much that way. I probably keep too much, but you never know when the piece you have may complete a puzzle; it has happened. Many keep file folders; one of my cousins told me that she had many file cabinets full, but then she never used a computer. Some say that it is best to write a book, and store information concisely in that manner. I also back up on disks for various families. If you've ever had your computer crash, you realize how fragile that memory is. Experts are now saying that disks last maybe ten years, and recommend that hard copies should be made on high quality cotton paper. Even the hardware to run present disks may be obsolete in a few years, and computers are going out of date so fast that museums won't have enough space to store all of the old ones, if we were fortunate enough to be able to seek an old computer to run the data. Remember cards with holes punched to store data? the were still being used some places in the early 80's, like at the college where I worked. It is also a good idea to give others a copy as you go along. My great aunt painfully collected data, and then her house burned with all of it stored there. A few copies of letters were in the hands of her daughter, now in a nursing home, who sent them to me. They disintegrate when touched. They were written in 1963 on poor quality copy paper. Of course, there are always safety deposit boxes. And it would be nice if you could share the addiction to genealogy with a descendant; I keep hoping that one who is interested will show up. Seems all of their energies have to go toward their descendants in the house, and with maintaining their careers. Some folks have to be cotton tops before they get interested! Or, before they have time. Hope this helps.
