Hull Henry Ellis, born 1835 in Lambeth, was the son of John Ellis and Jane Hembrough who were found in the 1841 Census at 6 Half Moon Alley, Cripplegate with their three sons, Henry aged 6, John aged 4 and Edwin aged 4 months. In the 1851 Census they had moved to 61 Middleton Street, where John was described as a Carpenter and his place of birth given as Belper in Derbyshire. Jane's place of birth was Hull, Yorkshire. By 1861 John and Jane were back south of the river living at Alfred Street, Lambeth. In a trade directory of 1851 John advertised himself as a carpenter and undertaker! Jane was the daughter of Richard Hembrough and Hannah Longhorne who married on 14th October 1799 at Sproatley, Yorkshire, and their first child, William Hembrough was born at Aldbrough. Subsequent children were born in Hull and Baptised at Sculcoates or Holy Trinity. They were - Richard b. 1802, Jane b. 1804, Mary b. 1807, Ann b. 1809 and Henry b. 1815. Where John Ellis and Jane Hembrough met and married is unknown. What can be deduced is that Jane kept in touch with her relations in Hull as the second son, John, went to live up there. In 1859 he married at Sculcoates and by the 1881 Census was living at 4 Ivy Cottages Sutton & Stoneferry, Hull, with his wife Rhoda and their eight children. Albert, eldest son of Henry and Elisabeth Ellis joined The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment and was posted to India where he met and married Elizabeth Harland, the daughter of Lance Corporal William Harland (of the above regiment) whose family had for many generations lived in or around Northallerton, Yorkshire. I would be interested to hear any theories as to how the London-Hull connection became established. Sorry for the wobbly columns - yes I have heard of tab stops but they seem not to be working today!
