My dead end had been this person named John Ellis. My gt.Grandfather was b,1899 in New Jersey .His named is John Manuel Ellis . I know he was named after his father John Ellis .Off census records I learned The elder John was born in Ohio . Now I know this elder John has relatives in New York because a Great Aunt fought for years because of the sale of ELLIS ISLAND and other lands that the family owned. All of this I got from my grandmother before she passed. The elder John married a Mararget Welch but by the time Gt.grandpa was 7 his parents divorced and we don't have any more info on our Ellis side. Maybe someone will know him.
