I am a descendant of ROBERT ELLIS who was born in Virginia in 1760. I have chased him across the south for 10 years and in doing so have found that there were "northern" Ellis's and "southern" Ellis's, totally unrelated. The recent e-mail stating "Most Ellis' came from Pa. through Ohio" does not agree with my research. Six Robert Ellis's served in the Revolution, from both North and South. Many Ellis families left Ireland and came to South Carolina when that state offered them free land. Others came to Virginia before the Revolution or into North Carolina. Their descendants are many. The path they took was South before heading back toward the North. I would agree that "many" came from Pa. through Ohio. I'm not sure "most" of them did, however. Mary Ash

i too, have found that all ellises that i have encountered are from south, and further south and further south... i have found many of them have migrated to the north in more recent years, from the early 1900's on, but the ellises i have, all are from southern kentucky, virginia, florida, alabama.....
