Is there anyone actively researching our infamous "Edward Ellis" of Va. I know of several who were at one time and was wondering if they had ran across any new information.

I've been reading, with interest, the migration of a lot of the readers' ELLIS ancestors. I have two ELLIS lines which we are tracing. My husband's ggg-grandmother, Charlotte ELLIS, was b Oct 9, 1817 in New York. She married a Nelson W. DICKERSON who was a "schoolmate" according to his obituary. He was b 1815 in Barrington, Yates Co., NY. It's certainly possible that Charlotte ELLIS was also born in that county. They married in Huron Co., Ohio Feb 1839 & they were in 1840 Fed census in Westfield Twp, Medina Co., Ohio then in 1850 in Butler Twp, Miami Co., Indiana then in 1857 in the Minnesota Territory census in Mankato, Blue Earth County until his death in 1881. My ELLIS line is my ggg-grandmother, Piety ELLIS b Nov 18, 1810 in Tn (county unk). Piety ELLIS married William STILES (also b in Tn). It is assumed their first 6 children were b as my line, John William STILES was b in Tn Oct 16, 1830 (their 5th child) then William Sanders STILES was b Oct 17, 1832 in Lincoln Co., Tn. Their 8th child, Margaretta STILES was b abt 1836 in Missouri. Then my line from the above John William STILES who md louisa Caroline GREGORY md Apr 19, 1849 Greene Co., Mo where my g-grandfather James Wiley STILES was b Feb 5, 1852 in Springfield, Mo who md Mary Amanda SMITH June 24, 1869 in Williamson Co., Tx. My ELLIS line was in Tn>Mo>Tx Hoping to connect with other ELLIS lines! My line starts with a Walter Ellis who fought for the Rev. from NC. His will read as if he had at least 3 brothers but I can not find anything on siblings or parents. We too went to GA, Ala, then West to Indian Territory, Ok, AZ, even California. Does anyone have a Walter b. about 1750 in the family tree? Hi All! I was interested in the message posted Thursday, 18 January 2001 7:5, From: Sheila German <sgerman@rochester.rr.com> - I too have been wondering whether there was ANYBODY following ELLIS people from the UK! I have been a subscriber for many months now and very rarely see ANYTHING from the UK. My ELLIS people were from LONDON, but I have recently discovered that they originated in Cambridgeshire! JAMES ELLIS m. MARIA HABLET at St Botolphs without Aldersgate, London in 1861. From the 1881 census, James and Maria were both born in Cambridgeshire around 1841 and 1843/4 respectively. That is the furthest back I have got so far, so unfortunately cannot help Sheila German with the question she posted, however, if/when I establish JAMES ELLIS's fathers name and date of birth we could both be lucky!!!! I would love to correspond with anyone with Ellis's in England and will gladly share the information that I have with anyone interested. Best wishes Angela Gibson Sydney, Australia

It is interesting the number of migrations for the Ellis line. The earliest I have found my Ellis line is about 1773 in Baltimore. In late 1791 or early 1792, they migrated to Kentucky. I have tried unsuccessfully to find out where they were before Baltimore. If anyone is familiar with the Obediah Ellis line please contact me. Thanks Sandi Ellis Morris
I second Alice's feelings here, I am certainly not the most vocal person on this list, but I can say that I have found some of the most caring people (and a lot of family) on these boards. As we have all come to learn, we are all threads woven into the same cloth forming a beautiful tapestry of love, life, faith and family in a myriad of colors as our individual branches grow. I will continue to welcome the opportunity to pray for family in need without regard for the 'appropriateness' of the venue with which it is requested of me. Repetitive nonsense violations need to be discerned from a single act of caring and concern. After all, aren't these boards supposed to make it easier to come together??? May God Bless and Keep You All. You are ALL always in my prayers as my heart goes out to you in your searches... "My" Ellises migrated from VA to NC to SC, then some went to AL and a smaller number to TN. My branch left AL and settled in TX. So I agree, there are many patterns of migration and several distinct families arrived in the 1600's. -- Nell Family history on WorldConnect: Porter: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=nell-porter_1 Ellis: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=nell-ellis_1
I am a descendant of ROBERT ELLIS who was born in Virginia in 1760. I have chased him across the south for 10 years and in doing so have found that there were "northern" Ellis's and "southern" Ellis's, totally unrelated. The recent e-mail stating "Most Ellis' came from Pa. through Ohio" does not agree with my research. Six Robert Ellis's served in the Revolution, from both North and South. Many Ellis families left Ireland and came to South Carolina when that state offered them free land. Others came to Virginia before the Revolution or into North Carolina. Their descendants are many. The path they took was South before heading back toward the North. I would agree that "many" came from Pa. through Ohio. I'm not sure "most" of them did, however. Mary Ash
Hello Lists, Good Evening! I must apologies for creating so much hate and discontent in trying to help a fellow genealogist in her request. I also need to apologies for sharing the personnel email that was sent to me by the Indiana Gen-List owner. I really feel that I did the right thing to help Nancy in her time of need. Yes, These lists are for genealogy related topics only, but the fact still remains that we are all here for each other as decent human beings should be. We all need to cooperate and work together in researching our family lines. Have A Great Week! Looking forward to hearing from you! God Bless You All! Warm Regards, Dennis W. Dear ELLIS researches: Who has done research in England on their ELLIS line? Just found out that the Arthur ELLIS and his wife that I am looking for were born in England (before 1820) from the 1892 New York State Census, where James states that his parents were both born in England, however it does not say where! Any suggestions? My previous posting: I am looking for information on the father of James Arthur ELLIS who was born 3 Jun 1839 Fleming, Cayuga Co., NY. Jame's father was Arthur and do not have a name for the mother. James married Martha Sophia ROBERTSON and lived in Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY from about 1850-1923. He was a gunsmith, he became an apprentice when 14 years old. We have no other information such as siblings or anything just the name of his father from James' death certificate. The mother must have died early, since James' son did not know his own grandmothers name. Thanks, Sheila German
Most Ellis' came from Pa. thru Ohio.....We were lucky ours did, settle in Indiana, but many are elsewhere...... I say it's a shame we cannot pray for our fellow persons in need.....apparently it helped her........so altho I am in Indiana, maybe I would like to be taken off this list also, as I can find it here at home....... List, The message Dennis posted was from the listowner of the Indiana list. It was not from me, and had nothing to do with the Ellis list. This list is for ALL Ellis researchers. I'm getting confused. The Ellis list covers all areas as far as I know. That message was a forward from the Indiana list. I might have to go check it out though because my Ellis just happened to be in Indiana.
