Hi Listers has anyone got access to trade directories for the London area in the 1850's? My gggrandfather, William Barnett Ellis was living at 8 Silk Street, St Giles, Cripplegate. His occupation is given variously as boot maker or boot closer. I am keen to know if this was a commercial premises or not. Likewise, on the 1881 census, he is living at 39 Tabernacle Walk, London, still as a boot closer. Does anyone have access to any 1880's Directories for London? Hi Listers, I've just obtained my ggrandfathers birth certificate. It says that he was born at what looks like, 8 Silk Street, St Giles, Cripplegate. 1. Was there a Silk Street in this area during the 1850's? 2. Does anyone have access to the 1851 census for this area to search out a William Barnett Ellis living at the same address? 3. Would someone born at this address be baptised at St Bartholomews, Moor Lane? I am looking for any information on Marshall Ellis. All I know of him comes from the death certificate of his daughter Louise (Ellis) McCastline. It says that Marshall was her father and that he was born in Baltimore, MD. Louise was born 23 Nov 1850 in Brooklyn, NY. Her mother (and presumably Mashall's wife) was Mary Ferguson of Sheffield, England. Thanks for any help. Judith Hawkins

Thank you so much for your help! I'm going to contact my mom and see if she has a copy of her birth record. If not, then I'll have her send for it. I'm also going to ask my biological grandpa about the explosion he was in. I hope it will shed some light on the questions! He did say that he was going to tell me the story sometime. Dear Listers, My friend has a BIG mystery and needs helps finding a direction to start in. Please, read below and advise. Thank You :) Laura Hi Listers! I have a twisted story. I'll try to write it. I hope it makes sense. My mom's biological father was involved in an explosion at work. He decided to disappear and not let anyone know he was okay. I guess my grandma thought he was dead. Well, my grandma changed my mom's birth record from one surname to another. I guess my grandma didn't want my mom to know her real dad. Years later when my mom was 6 years, she had to go to court and talk to the judge about the man that my grandma was marrying. My grandma HAD to tell my mom about the story. Otherwise, I don't think that my mom would've ever known about her real dad. Well, this man shows up and says he's my mom's real dad. I guess he's been looking for my mom for a long time. I didn't meet him until I was in Junior High. To make the story more weird, my grandma is being tight lipped about this side of her life. I told her I was going to work on this side since it's my real line. She got real upset. I'm still working on the other side since the guy she's married to now is the only grandpa I've known. I would like to know how to go about finding the paper work that would have my mom's real surname changed to the other one. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't know what court this took place. I'm assuming WA since my mom was born there. I hope this story makes a little sense. I've only gotten bits and pieces. Thank you in advance. Hello Listers. This is Arnold Ellis, I sent the wrong message out the last time asking for information I already had. This is from my being a rank amateur at the genealogy game. What I should have requested is if any one had information on the descendants of the three persons, My aunt Sahara Ellen Ellis. She married Eslia Ritz and the last time I had any contact was in 1943 in Bonners Fairy , ID. I saw my uncle Walter in 1945 at a farm out side Ontario, Ore. He was married to Winnie M Holeman I do not ever remember seeing John Elmer Ellis. He was married to Winnie Holeman Sinclair. Thanks Arnold Ellis adellis@lanset.com

I am requesting that someone in the Beaumont, TX area check for the obituaries of my uncle, Surrey B. ELLIS, and his wife, Marie Gregg ELLIS. Uncle Surrey died June 13, 1975 in Beaumont. According to the Social Security Index, Marie died April 14 or 15, 1988 in Beaumont. Marie was also a distant cousin. Your help would be greatly appreciated. The Ellis's that I am looking for seem to have been around Cabbarrus, N.C. I was researching Thomas Ellis Dawes Roll # that many Lewis's applied under but I am not sure this is the correct Thomas Ellis. All my Browns applications referred back to Thomas Ellis and his daughter Polly who married Aaron Brown. They left North Carolina and went to Hamilton County, Tn. prior to the removal in 1838. They were all denied citizenship because their ancestors were not party to the treaty of 1835. I suspect that they were avoiding the removal. They later went to Wise County, Texas although one of them did end up in IT Ok. I have not been able to locate Polly or Thomas by normal methods. I will gather my material and repost with dates and application #'s. Thomas Ellis was according to the applications full blood Cherokee. My dates are running 1750 through about 1835-40 when they left for Tennessee. I can also find no record of Simeon W Brown in NC who was Aaron's oldest son and my GGGrandfather. I believe there is a Polly Eles on the 1817 Roll but I haven't been able to confirm this. If there are any Lewis's on this list, I have all of those applications applying with Thomas Ellis and Sally Ellis. The primary Lewis is James. Charlene
Hello Ellis researchers. Again, I am sending out my query in hopes there are some new people working on our line. I have been researching Obediah Ellis. I find him in Baltimore in the 1770's, in Anne Arundel, MD., in 1780's and then he is in Frederick, MD., in 1790-91 selling wagon, horses, etc. to his son Eleazer Ellis before moving to Woodford Co., KY. Eleazer married Rebecca Onion (some say she was a Jones) in Frederick and Obediah's daughter Rachel married Henry Sheets. I am trying to find out who Obediah's first wife was, where he came from, if he was the immigrant, who his parents were. Really just any information. I have hit a big brick wall. Thanks for any help on this line and sure hope to hear from some cousins. Sandi Please reply either to the list or directly to me at ricksandm@msn.com

There probably were more than one Ellis Family in the area of Allen County in the time frame 1815-1870. There was a James Ellis family in nearby Sumner County during this time frame. A conflict with Mr. Spivey's list of children is the following: Allen Co., KY vital records by Rabold & Price show Lettie A. Ellis b. Oct. 12, 1861, parents James Ellis b. Allen County and Mary Parker b. NC. The name James does not occur in my Ellis line which includes one Samuel E. Ellis married 1815 in Allen County. Was there another Ellis family living there during this time frame ? Was he adopted ? Now that I have added to the confusion, I'll sign off <g> Lloyd D.
