About a year ago I remember someone telling me that a list just for the Surname Ellis had been formed for the UK. This list is a great list but deals much more with North America if I am correct. I would like to research only Ellis in UK. Can someone help. Thank you. Scott Shipman shipwrek@vianet.on.ca All the way from the backwoods of Ontario Canada

Hello, Still searching for info on Matthew (Matt E.) Edward Ellis, b. Sept. 13,1844 (supposedly in Calhoun, Gordon Co., GA., d. April 4, 1922 in the Confederate Soldiers Home, Atlanta, GA., buried in Fain Cemetery, Calhoun, GA. Father's name unknown. Mother, Elizabeth ( Mrs. E.G. Ellis is written on her stone in the Fain Cemetery, Calhoun, GA.). He was married Nov. 3, 1874 to Naomi/Neomi/Neoma Josephine (Josie) Phillips. She was born April 27, 1849 and died January 15, 1897 and is also buried in Fain Cemetery, Calhoun, GA. Her parents were Thomas Green and Mary Sessions-Phillips of Gordon County, Calhoun, GA. Matt and Naomi had at least two sons and possibly more children: James Harry, b. 1880 and Harlan Columbus, b. Jan 31, 1887, both born in Calhoun, GA., and are now both deceased. James Harry married Mattie Lewis. They had two sons, Thomas Lewis and George Franklin (both deceased). Harlan married Lasse Belle ? (last name could be Matthews). They had one son (we think his name could have been Clinton). Harlan divorced Lasse Belle in 1916 in Muskogee, OK and in 1917, he married Alta Lee Best in Muskogee, OK. Ten children came from this union, two of whom are deceased. Information passed down in the family states that Matthew's father went to serve in the Civil War and never returned so was assumed to be dead, but he went to OK instead and started a new family. Matthew served in the Civil War, Co. H, 3rd Georgia Infantry and was wounded July 4, 1863. He came back to Calhoun after the war. Would appreciate any information on Matt and his family. Regards, June Ellis Carter
Have been looking for many years now for Obediah Ellis's birth location, parents and first wife. He was in Baltimore, Anne Arundel and Frederick from 1760 to 1791. He is on tax lists, and the 1790 Census for Maryland. He moved to KY in late 1791 or early 1792. He shows up in Woodford County tax lists for 1792, 1793, 1794, he is then in Franklin County in 1795. He then is in Scott County in about 1808 until his death in 1823. Known children are Eleazer Ellis m. Rebecca Jones Rachel Ellis m. Henry Sheets Israel Ellis m. Sarah Hall (possible son, Jesse Ellis m. Diana Sheets Thanks for any help on this line. Sandi Ellis Morris
Roll call: Seeking info on Moses Ellis m. Rachel Curtis in TN; moved to Montgomery County, MO c. 1806; died there in 1847. Also seek info on John Jasper Ellis, born c. 1835 in Arkansas? Missouri? (conflicting info in census). Jenny
Looking for information on Addison Ellis family of Montgomery County, Mississippi. Montgomery County history book shows Addison Ellis family was from Harris County, Georgia in the early 1840's. Children were: Jesse Hillard Ellis, Elijah Leonidas Ellis , Theophilus M. Ellis, Margery Francis Ellis, Mary C. Ellis, William Ellis, Martha A. Ellis, Benjamin C. Ellis, Catherina Ellis, and Arcenia Ellis. All children were born in Georgia with exception of Arcenia who was born in Mississippi about 1847. Addison was married to Matilda (maiden name unknown) Ellis. I have census information showing Matilda and some children in Choctaw County, MS. Believe some of th children may have gone to Carroll and/or Holmes County, MS. Would appreciate any information on this family. Amanda Murphy amandamurf@aol.com
Looking for information on Martha Ann ELLIS Daves. She was born January 3, 1839 and died February 4, 1913 in Mississippi. She was married to Hugh Dawson Daves and they lived in Carroll County, Mississippi. She was his second wife. Hugh supposedly was from Choctaw County, Mississippi. Could she possibly have been the daughter of Addison and Matilda ? Ellis? Amanda Murphy amandamurf@aol.com
You wrote: <Roten Ernest Ellis b: Jan 1829 TN (father could be but not proven Abram Ellis b: 1795 or Snelling Ellis> Do you have the place of birth ? I have not run into the name Roten Ernest in my searching. Since Abram and Snelling are my line, I will supply what I have. Abram was the most elusive of the family, who lived in Sumner County, TN and in nearby KY. The following are from my notes: Snelling sells his 250 acres on Drakes Creek, where he lived, on 28 October, 1828. See Estate records. By 21 January, 1829 Court appoints Estate administrator. We assume that Snelling dies (Nov.-Dec.) 1828. Margaret b. June 30, 1830 (conceived ca October 1829) was not his daughter. i.e. she was conceived after Snelling died. He is not shown in the 1830 census. It is therefore possible that widow "Peggy" marries the Mr. (Abram?) Ellis in 1829. Jane Ellis, their daughter, is born August 25, 1835. In 1840 we find Margaret Ellis in Missouri. Trying to prove that Abram m. widow "Peggy" Ellis: Was Abram a traveling merchant ? Why was he living in Humphrey County, TN by 1830 (see 1830 census) ? Margaret's Hudson parents lived there at this time. In reading the census, it appears that his wife R.... may have died < 1830. Was R..... a Hudson ? No records of interest remain in the archives of Humphreys County, TN prior to 1838. In 1830 Margaret "Peggy" (Hudson) Ellis stayed in Sumner county to settle the estate of her husband Snelling. Abram and "Peggy" could have married ca 1829. Sumner County Schools. From Loose Records, Microfilm item 39, in the Sumner County Archives. June 30, 1838 Students ages 6 to 16, show Margaret Ellis Dist. 20 with 2 children in school. Only other Ellis listed is Isaac in Dist. 20 with 3 children. Margarets 2 children could have been Margaret age 8 and Snellings son Joshua age 14. It appears that "Peggy" went to Bates Co., MO, per the 1840 census, with three children Edward S. age 3 (b. 1837), Jane age 5 (b. 1835), Margaret age 9-10 (b. 1830). Compare this with the Abram in Lewis Co., MO 1840 census.(another person?) Bates County 1850 census shows her married to a Mr. Lewis. The 1840 Census of Lewis Co., MO as far as the children go fits very well with the 1830 TN census, except for the oldest female who gave her age as in the 30-40 bracket. i.e. born 1800-1810. "Peggy" was born in 1794. Women do lie about their age ! The above 1840 MO census shows males having been born from 1830 to 1840. By 1840, all of Snellings 5 boys would have been age 16 or older. Not much help, but I would check the other Ellis families for your Roten. Good hunting, Lloyd D. Ellis

My great-grandmother was Louise Ellis, b 1850 in Brooklyn, NY. She married Joseph McCastline (or McCaslin), and they had 5 children: Robert, Louise, William, Edwin, and Ida. Louise's death certificate says that her father was Marshall Ellis, b. Baltimore, MD. Her mother was Mary Ferguson, b. Sheffield, England. I have found a Marshall Ellis on the 1850 census index for Brooklyn, but I have not yet had a chance to look at the actual census page yet. I would love any information on Marshall or his wife Mary. This is my Ellis Line: My second great grandparents were Mary M. Ellis and James Richard Ainsworth. Third great grandparents were Lott Warren Ellis and Anna Roberts. Fourth great grandparents were George Ellis and Mary Warren. Fifth great grandparents were Stephen Ellis and Hannah or Diana Lowry. Sixth great grandparents were Joseph Ellis and Elizabeth Perkins. Seventh great grandparents were John Ellis and Elizabeth Smith. Eighth great grandparents were John Ellis and Susannah Royall. Many researchers say that this John was a son of David and Margarett Ellis of Jamestown. I believe that this is an incredible stretch because they would have both been much to old to have a son born 1661. Either there was a generation missing between them or the stories about this John being an original immigrant from England or Wales are true and there is no connection to David and Margarett. Does anyone have any new evidence or theories on the parents of this John Ellis. Barbara
