    1. [ELLIS-L] Joseph Ellis
    2. Ellen Belcher
    3. I am seeking the ancestry of Joseph and Mary Ellis who lived in Franklin Co., Va. from approximately 1770-1796 after which they migrated to Kentucky. Their son Stephen L. Ellis married in Franklin Co., Va. to Rebecca Lewis on 9 April 1795. Also son Joseph Ellis married Frances Woodson there on 1 July 1790. John Ellis, a probable brother to Stephen and Joseph, married Mildred Lee in Franklin Co., Va. on 6 April 1795. Their sister Elizabeth Ellis married James Harrel in Franklin Co., Va. and the Harrel's are living close to Stephen and Rebecca Ellis in Shelby Co., Ky in the 1810 census. I will be glad to share what information I have on this family. Ellen Belcher

    3. Hi Rick, My mother's father is Charles Austin POWELL. He was the son of Jay Wellman and Mary Eulinda (ELLIS) POWELL, born 13 May 1887 in Clinton, Massachusetts. All I know of Jay and Mary is that Jay was a carpenter and both were born in Vermont. Noting how Salathiel ELLIS was born in Windsor county, Vermont, do you have any knowledge of other ELLIS family members born in Vermont? We sure would like to solve this part of the family mystery. 3. James, My G3grandfather is Salathiel ELLIS. The following bio is from the history of Dodge County, MN and is probably a whole lot more than you want to know. ----- SALATHIEL ELLIS (deceased) was born in Windsor county, Vermont, November 13, 1803. While he was quite young his parents moved to St. Lawrence county, New York, where he learned the shoemaker's trade, but never worked at it after he served his apprenticeship. He finished his education at the Potsdam Academy. In 1858 he came to this county and bought a farm on section 28, town of Milton [Dodge county, MN]. At the outbreak of the rebellion he was in Washington, and was the first man to enlist for the defense of Washington. Believing that no one could do him justice without having known him, the writer will copy in whole, or in part, from the press, printed at the time of his death. From the San Jose (Cal.) "Mercury:" "In sorrow and sympathy with the living, we note the departure to his beautiful home in the land of souls, of our artist, sculptor and friend, Salathiel Ellis, who passed on from this city yesterday, October 28, 1879, at the ripe age of seventy-six years. Mr. Ellis was a gifted and painstaking artist. He is well known throughout the western states, where he achieved some of his greatest triumphs. Among his last works, since he became a resident of San Jose, is his bust, in marble, of the late Mrs. Hill, which is regarded as among the most faithful and finished productions of his chisel. Mr. Ellis was among the sweetest and whitest-souled men we ever knew. Finely organized, with a nature as gentle and refined as that of a noble and cultured woman, 'none knew him but to love him.' His religion was the religion of kindness and brotherly love; his faith, the absolute knowledge of a life beyond. We doubt not, in the 'many mansions' of the Summer Land, there was one ready and in perfect order for him; and that the hand that here called forth such bright creations from the voiceless rocks will there find grander studies and higher inspirations, ever and ever, in the coming ages." From the San Jose "Times:" " Mr. Ellis was a sculptor of considerable reputation. He made the bronze medals for the Indians under four of five administrations. He made also the Vanderbilt medal. His last work was the colossal statue in bronze of Elias Howe, the inventor of sewing machines, which is now in New York, and for which he was to receive from the Howe sewing machine company twenty thousand dollars. * * * Mr. Ellis leaves three sons residing in San Jose, and one daughter residing in California, and three in Dodge county, Minnesota." Much of the work of modeling, and of making the dies for some of the works mentioned above, was done by Mr. Ellis in this county. In addition to these he executed a life-size marble medallion of Gen. Edgerton, of this place, and a similar one of Hon. Preston King, of New York (both acknowledged by art critics as not to be excelled), during his residence in this village. By many of those who suffered by the great hail-storm of 1858, he will be especially remembered, as having used his means and influence in New York in securing several hundred dollars' worth of goods to help in tiding them over those troublous times. His three daughters are: Mrs. Thomas White and Mrs. Albert Calhoun (now deceased), of Milton, and Mrs. Dr. Wilson, of Fillmore county, Nebraska. Only those who knew him best are able to appreciate all his good qualities; but those who were not personally acquainted with him felt as if they had lost a near friend. ----- Salathiel lived in Dodge County from 1858 until 1873. He was partners with Theodore Ruth in the business Ellis & Ruth, Photographers, a gallery at the corner of Clay and Fourth streets in Mantorville, Dodge co, MN. Salathiel was a sculptor and photographer. His statue of Elias Howe (sewing machine inventor) stands in Central Park, NY city. However, in business we often try other strategies with dead horses, including the following: 1. Buy a stronger whip. 2. Change riders. 3. Say things like, "This is the way we have always ridden this horse." 4. Appoint a committee to study the horse. 5. Visit other sites to see how they ride dead horses. 6. Appoint a tiger team to revive the dead horse. 7. Create a training session to increase our riding ability. 8. Compare the state of dead horses in today's environment. 9. Revisit the performance requirements for horses. 10. Hire contractors to ride the dead horse. 11. Harness several dead horses together for increased speed. 12. Declare that, "No horse is too dead to beat." 13. Provide additional funding to increase the horse's performance. 14. Do a cost analysis study to see if contractors can ride it cheaper. 15. Purchase a product to make dead horses run faster. 16. Declare that the horse is "better, faster, cheaper" dead. 17. Increase the standards to ride dead horses. 18. Form a quality team to find uses for dead horses. 19. Say this horse was procured with cost as an independent variable. 20. Promote the dead horse to management. --part0_911930549_boundary--

    1. [ELLIS-L] Locating and noting for future reference old cemetaries: information
    2. Leslie Hiatt
    3. Hi I copied this off of the Page list and thought that it might be of interest.... Leslie I have a Magellan GPS 2000 XL Satellite Navigator. There are many GPS units (receivers) available from $100 up to whatever you wish to pay. Even the cheapest units are capable of telling you the latitude and longitude accurately enough to find any geographical location if known. They are small, portable, almost pocket size, and operate on internal batteries or 12 volts from your car cig. lighter socket. I use DeLorme Street Atlas USA mapping program to save my locations on a map which I can print out & send a copy to other people if needed. You don't need a mapping program to use the GPS unit. You can just write down the location for future reference if you don't have the program. The mapping program will let you simply find any Lat./ Long. coordinates in the United States of any location you want. If someone gave me coordinates of a cemetery that was out in the woods on a farm in Kentucky, I could go right to it. I have been using my GPS unit and saving this info. for some time now, hoping some other people would start doing the same. I will be happy to answer any questions about this because I want to locate a number of cemeteries yet that seem to be lost! A number of electronics stores such as Radio Shack carry some of these units. Also, some sporting goods stores, since they are good for hikers and hunters to find their way back. I bought mine from K-Mart in the sporting goods section. If you get coordinates on any cemeteries in Madison Co., Kentucky or Pike Co., Illinois, send them to me! Don Fox [email protected] ______________________________ To answer some of the questions about GPS units, read on. 1. The accuracy at present is about 100 meters (which is a little more than 300 feet for you non-metric people). That accuracy will get you real close to a location you are looking for with no problem. 2. My main interest in using this method is to give people a way to find abandoned cemeteries which are not now on present day maps and believe me, there are a lot of them! I am not concerned about major cemeteries so much because they are on most maps. Old topographic maps show a number of abandoned cemeteries but no-where near all of them. 3. It is important to know that two methods of recording positions are commonly used here in the US. One uses Degrees, Minutes and Seconds, written as: 30 deg., 45 min., 30 seconds but the other uses a fractional notation such as: 30 deg., 45.5 minutes which is the same as the location above. A location in Denver, Colorado would be written as: 39 deg. 45.00 N & 105 deg. 00.00 W. Be sure to put a decimal point in if you are using the decimal system or it can be very confusing! 4. I am presently using DeLorme Street Atlas USA, version 6.0. With it, I can put a lat/lon flag on any location and it stores that info. for future reference. You can place any name or words on the map along with the location. I can then print out a map, which shows the flag on it for other people's use, or for me to use if I don't have my notebook computer with me. 5. At the present time, I do not have access to any cemetery records here at my home. Don Fox [email protected]

    3. I am searching for information on Thomas Ellis - b. abt 1784 in South Carolina. He married Judah Wright sometime before 26 Nov 1803, possibly in Newberry County, South Carolina. Judah was born abt 1786 in North Carolina. They had at least five children, only two of whose name are known to me. I am descended from both of them. They are: Judah A. Ellis - b. 23 Nov 1813 in Spencer County, Indiana. md. James Henry Finch on 11 June 1835 in Morgan County, Illinois d. 21 May 1884 in Phillipsburg, Phillips, Kansas buried 23 May 1884, also in Phillipsburg Jane Ellis - b. 1822 in Indiana md. Anson Henry Bliss on 6 Aug 1840 in Quincy, Adams, Illinois d. 1884 in Osborne County, Kansas The other three children were a male born about 1820, a female born between 1830 and 1835, and a female born between 1835 and 1840. I find the parents on the 1840 Adams County, Illinois census and on the 1850 Brown County, Illinois census. Don't know what happened to them after that. Need information on the rest of their descendants as well as their parents, siblings and other ancestors. Does anybody have any information that could help me? 3. Hi. We may have communicated in the past, as I am also seeking MOFFETT and ELLIS ancestors. They are, unfortunately, unrelated even though they are both lines in my father's DOUGHTY line. ------------MY ELLIS FAMILY--- I have almost no information on this family. DeBerry bible of William Ellis DeBerry, born 1809 in NC, a son of Lemuel DeBerry and Delphia ELLIS, states only that his mother, DELPHIA, was a daughter WILLIAM ELLIS and Elizabeth STANTON, with no dates nor locations. It is believed that William Ellis of Pitt Co NC served in Capt John Hodges' Co. Vol. under Col. Benj. Seawell of NC Regt of Militia, as shown in Certificate from the War Dept filed with an application for membership in the DAR in 1915 [application was approved and the applicant admitted to membership as Nat. No. 103110]. These papers state that WILLIAM ELLIS, born in Virginia, 1755; died after 1812 in North Carolina [date not given], to ELIZABETH STANTON, also born 1755 Va; died NC. Only one child is mentioned, DELPHIA ELLIS, who married Lemuel deBERRY. I have none of the documents mentioned above, and have not been able to locate additional information on this WILLIAM and ELIZABETH [STANTON] ELLIS. I might mention that Lemuel deBERRY was of Pitt County, NC also, which lends support to William Ellis also being of Pitt Co. Their were so many having the name "William Ellis" in that place and that time, it has been impossible to lay claim to any one of them as my own. -----------MY MOFFETTS I am seeking the parents and siblings of JOHN MOFFETT, born [probably] northern Ireland about 1706. He married Mary Christian, d/o Gilbert and Margaret Richardson Christian. John died in Augusta Co. Va. c1746. Children of John MOFFETT & Mary CHRISTIAN, all believed born Augusta County, Va: i. Margaret, b. bef 1730 ii. Catharine b. c1732 iii. George b. c1735 iv. Mary b. c1736 v. William b. c1739 vi. John b. c1740 vii. **HANNAH b. c1742 + Robert TRIMBLE [my ancestors] --------------------- If you see anything of interest, let me know. Will share anything I have. Hope you fare better than I have, :) LaDoris ========================================= At 02:50 PM 11/14/98 -0600, Jennifer wrote: >As a query to the Ellis list, I am in search of Moffetts and Ellis spouses.
