I am seeking any possible information about this person. My fil was placed in an orphanage at age 10 and doesn't remember much and has no contact with his family of origin. This is the little info I have: Gladys Lorraine Ellis b. (1910-1915) (St. Joseph,Buchanan,Missouri) m. (1928) St. Joseph,Buchana,Missouri d. ???? She married Arthur Handley, probably in 1928. They divorced around 1940. She later remarried a man named William Yarrington/Yerrington. Her mother's name was Etta May. Gladys may have had a sister named Ruby. Any information or possible connection will be much appreciated. Thank you. Barbara Handley [email protected] "A lot of us are working harder than we want, at things we don't like to do. Why? oops! on my posting for Lucy Ellis born in 1810 in Vermont I find I was in error. According to her gravestone it lists her as being age 43 years, 9 mo., and 1 day. in 1852 This would put her birth year at about 1808. sorry about that. hope this helps? John
Hello out there! I am looking for any info on a Lucy Ellis who married a Horace Webb in NY about 1830ish. Lucy is daid to have been born (according to the 1850 Ohio census AND her gravestone record) in 1810, in Vermont. She and Horace and their children moved between 1840 and 1850 to Huron County Ohio. Where they appear in the 1850 census. Lucy died not long after that in Feb 1852. Horace then married 2nd Sarah Call. anyway, any idea who Lucy Ellis' parents are? I have a theory it might be an Asa Ellis who appears in the 1830 census for Georgetown, NY as does Horace Webb. and they are actually living a few houses apart! I followed this Asa back into Vermont in the 1810 census. But I can't find a list of his children, There are more than one Asa Ellis' in Vermont at that time, and all in southern VT. he is between 50 & 60 years old in the 1830 census as is his wife. any help on this problem? John Bedard

I am trying to obtain some further information about a Martha Ellis who , per I.G.I. , married Edward Harley in the Shropshire parish of Bedstone on 13th June 1793. Both the Harley and the Ellis families seem to have had connections as well with the Shropshire parishes of Hopton Castle and Bitterley. I have a long line of descendants of these ancestors and would be glad to exchange information. Philip Hobson Cambridge U.K.

Am searching for father of Marion Ellis who came to TN, his name was James. Marion had a son, Elzack born in Paint Rock County, TN. Elzack moved to Fentress County, TN to raise his family. One son, Dewey J. Ellis moved to IN and in 1925, Dewey had son, Charles who was born in Muncie, IN. We believe James was married to a woman by name of Hulda Burtram. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, January 29, 1999 9:32 AM Subject: ELLIS-D Digest V99 #16
Fellow Rooters, This came to me via a newsletter from an historic society recently: "Dear Ancestor Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and the date are chiseled out On polished, marbled stone. It reaches out to all who cares It is too late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born. Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, in bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this spot, And come to visit you." Brant [email protected] 01/27/99 07:50 AM Howdy Ellis crew! I just found some more info (still very limited ) on my Ellis connection from a book on the Wright family of Stones River, TN. Here's what the book showed: 3 Ellis brothers came into TN from NC around 1820. They were: Rev. John Ellis, Joshua Ellis, and Lewis Ellis. REV. JOHN ELLIS m. FRANCES or NANCY BELL (dau. of Ben Bell and Hettie Foot). One of REV. JOHN AND NANCY (BELL) ELLIS'S daughters married a Mr. Pentacost, and another, HALLEY FRANCES ELLIS, married THOMAS J. MCCLENDON (my line). JOSHUA ELLIS... LEWIS ELLIS m NANCY or FRANCES BELL (dau. of Ben Bell and Hettie Foot). The 1850 TN census listes LEWIS ELLIS (60yrs) with wife NANCY. Would anyone have any info on the lineage of JOHN, JOSHUA, and LEWIS ELLIS from NC? God bless!!! Brant
I recently posted the question below to the readers of the group. I received several interesting replies and thank everyone for the information I have posted the replies below my question for your interest. The names do not show to protect the privacy of the sender. All of the listed replies were sent to me personally. By the way the index for the cemetery is http://www.rootsweb.com/~iasioux/cemetery.htm#alpha-index it's a cemetery in Sioux County Iowa. Thanks again for the responses. Hello everyone, I have found the grave via the internet of one of my ancestors. I have not visited the site yet. It's a graveyard in northwestern Iowa. It appears the person's name I am looking for appears on the backside of an unrelated as far as I know) person's headstone. I think the headstone lies in the vicinity of the other family members of that area. I can't be sure because I haven't been there. Anyone else run into this type of headstone marking? Just curious. Responses: 1. Mark, I understand that now a day, parents are having their children names engraved on back of the headstone. Some times even the birth date and married names of daughters. I think that would be a great idea for our descendents to locate more then just our headstone. 2. At a cemetery in MO I found my great-great-great-grandmother's headstone markings on the back of her husband's (my great-great-great-grandfather) headstone. It was an upright slab type of stone. 3. Mark, I think your "as far as I know" is the important aspect. I have seen several obelisk (Washington Monument) type stones with people with different last names on different sides. Usually they are daughter's married names. One in the Lawrenceville cemetery in Boone County was a son in law in the family who died long before his wife. She remarried two more times and was not buried there. She died in Washington state. When you see the cemetery the relationships may be more apparent. 4. Hi Mark, My guess is that it is NOT an unrelated person's headstone. I don't think I have once seen the use of a headstone or plot for unrelated people! Keep digging (figuratively, of course!) for a connection. Write to the sexton of the cemetery, or local library, and see if they can determine the relationship. Mark S. Ellis R.T. I thought I would introduce myself, as I have only just subscribed. I have been researching my family tree for the past three years. Most people in the tree came from & lived in the Baldock area of Hertfordshire, England, which is also close to the borders of Cambridgeshire & Bedfordshire. So far I have traced back to 1769, but I do have a few loose ends. Maybe there is someone that could help me, or I could help them. John, I don't have any answers to the Lucy Ellis mystery, but I have a "missing" Ellis family who passed through VT during that time. My ancestor's brother, Grindal Ellis, married Susan Whitney, and they had three daughters...names unknown. These Ellises were from Medway, MA. Grindal, Seth and Nathan Ellis were sons of Seth Ellis, Sr and Eliza Rawson. Nathan Ellis and his wife (Sarah Thayer), married in 1808. They moved to Brattleboro, VT> to Wyoming Co, NY>to Summit Co, OH. I don't know if either or both of his brothers made a similar migration, but it would be typical for them to do so. Just another possibility. Pat Sabin I don't kno [email protected] wrote: > Hello out there! > > I am looking for any info on a Lucy Ellis who married a Horace > Webb in NY about 1830ish. Brant [email protected] 01/22/99 08:38 AM Howdy all! I would like to thank everyone who's written with clues for my search, but so far with my limited info, I still can't get very far on my Ellis family. I found that during the 1860 TN census in Davidson Co., TN, my HALLEY FRANCES ELLIS (b. abt 1815 in NC - married Thomas J. McClendon July 31, 1837 in Davdison Co., TN) lived near a LOUIS ELLIS who was born abt 1790 in NC. HALLEY FRANCES (ELLIS) and Thomas J. McClendon had the following children: JANE N., JEFF, SIMON, ANNA ROSS, and WINIFRED MCCLENDON. Any info would be appreciated. Family tales say that Halley Frances's daughter ANNA ROSS MCCLENDON was half Cherokee, I wonder if this is in confusion with the Ellis family coming from Cherokee, NC? - I obviously don't know. God bless and thanks for any and all assistance!!! Brant
