Hi Bob, On the Ellis surname that is about all I have. I do know that they came from Virginia, and had to have been very earlier settlers. I do believe that their is a connection, but have not done that much with this line. I'll keep your email address if anything comes up. If you would like send me what you have on your Bourbon Co., KY Ellis family. I also tried to email you, but it kept getting returned. Hi everyone, To be as brief as possible. I am researching the surname Ellis. My 3rd great garandparents were Wiiliam Ellis, born 1797 in N.C. (unknown town) & Elizabeth Allin, born 1803 in Tenn or N.C. They had 10 children, I know of 9. Their 1st child was John Ellis b. abt 1881-82. (John Cumberland?) Robert James Ellis b. 1/1833 died 1905 in Cross Co. Arkansas Thomas Ellis b. about 1836 Nancy Ellis b. abt 1838 Lucy Ellis b. 1839 married George Smith in 1859 St Francis Co Ar. William Ellis b. abt 1841>May be my great Great Grandfather, no documents George Ellis b. abt 1843 James Ellis b. abt 1844 Yancy b. 4/1845 died ? Poinsett Co. Ar. This information was taken from Goodspeeds 1890 Arkansas. My dilema is that I am not sure if Christopher Ellis & Nancy Callahan are the parents of William Ellis. I'm also not sure if their 1st child, John, is really John Cumberland Ellis. He moved to Indiana in 1849 & died in 1919. Married Harriet Quick (in Indiana) & had 12 children. His obituary reads "Uncle John's grandfather was Christopher Ellis, a native of London England who served as a soldier in North Carolina in the Revolution. His wife, Nancy Callahan, she being the mother of ten children, six daughters and 4 sons". The obituary does not mention John's parents. So, does anyone have any information that could confirm or, deny this. I appreciate anything you can do for me and, look forward to your response. If you're researching this family get in touch. I have a lot that I would share. Sincerely, Dallas Harold Ellis
Hello, I am just starting on another branch of my family, and hoping somone on the list is familiar with my grandmother or her family. The name of my grandmother was Elizabeth Louise Ellis born July 10 1892 London England. When she moved to Canada in the 1920s? she went by the name of Mabel Ellis, she also opened a Tea Shop in Manitoba, Canada. The story is that she left a family behind in England, hence the reason for the name change. Hoping this rings a bell with someone. Thanks Charlotte, Canada.
List members, I am searching for information on James ELLIS who with his wife Mary had a daughter, Mary who married John TYDINGS 16 Jun 1705 at West River Meeting, Anne Arundel, Maryland. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any information. TIA. Gary Schanken Pasadena, Md. USA [email protected]
New to list - Looking for ancestors of Elinor Ellis b. 02-Apr-1800,Bourbon Co., KY. d. 1862, Boone Co., MO. She is believed to be the daughter of William Ellis & Margaret (Savage ?). Elinor married Eli Northcutt (b. 26-Dec-1799, KY, son of William Northcutt and Annie Moore) 23-Jan-1823, Paris, Bourbon Co., KY. Thanks Damien & Susan Aragon
This message is being shared with a smile :), and is just a simple friendly reminder from one researcher to many others. When we are discussing COUNTIES in our messages and queries, it would be helpful if we all remember to include the NAME or INITIAL of the STATE that it is located in. This may sound very basic and simple, but I've noticed that many people seem to forget to include the STATE in which they are referring to in their messages. I have noticed, time after time (and not infrequently), that people take great care to compose detailed, and sometimes lengthy messages, about their ancestor research, including counties, but never once mentioning the state in the entire message. My own excitement and frustration peaks when I read of a similar family name in the correct county, only to find out, after wasted emails that it is the wrong state. Since I have seen this so often, I have decided to share this as a reminder to all. It would make it so much easier for all of us, if we could just remember this: Please keep in mind, that the Internet and these lists are accessed and contributed to by people from all over the US and world. There are 50 STATES in the these United States. Many of these states have counties of the SAME NAME. This may actually come as a surprise to some searchers. Examples (just to name a few): Reference: Handbook for Genealogists by Everton and every US Atlas. 8 STATES have/had a Butler Co.: Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. 18 STATES have/had a Clark or Clarke Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, 19 STATES have/had a Clay Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, 6 STATES have/had a Dallas Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Texas, Wisconsin, 10 STATES have/had a Pike Co.: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. 12 STATES have/had a Polk Co.: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin. .....and so son, and so on. There are hundreds of county names that appear in more than one state. Please help yourself, and all of us, by remembering to include the STATE to which you are referring. This will make many genealogists lives so much easier. With a smile and a thank you for listening to my 2 cents. Happy Hunting! :) Cynthia SIMS Kirkland (This is not a flame, nor do I intend it to turn into a big discussion. I don't mean to open a can of worms or to offend to anyone. Wales>>MD>>NC I am mostly interested in James Ellis b1735 Kent Co MD,m.Peggy Hopper b1740, and descendants. I have a good deal of information on the line. I am from the area of Shelby, and there are a few researchers from the area. I am interested in finding out more about my GGfather, Zenas Alonzo Ellis b.1821 Rutherford Co. NC d.1905 Cleveland Co. NC. I know he and both of his wives are buried at Patterson Springs Baptist Church,Patterson Springs,NC. I am interested any details of their lives, other than "Farmer" as listed on the census. I also heard that he had donated land for either a church or school. I have only birth/death and where he lived. any suggestions? I have some good news to pass on. The DAR Library Catalogue has just been put on the Internet. This is a significant event for genealogists because the DAR Library contains many documents, books, etc. that either don't exist elsewhere, or are very difficult to locate. You can access it through the DAR Home Page, at: www.dar.org the click on Genealogical Library, or directly at: http://dar.library.net/index.htm It is important to read the directions for using the catalog because the DAR Library uses its own cataloging system. Descriptions and directions appear at the bottom of the library home page. The availability of the catalog on-line will greatly facilitate advance preparation for researchers planning a trip to the library.

Thank you for posting this. As one of the volunteer workers engaged in this project it's nice to know that our efforts will be appreciated. My particular volunteer group has 25 of the microfilms and we are doing our best to get them finished by the end of this year. Some of these records are extremely difficult to read due to poor quality of original records, handwriting, or language. Although it is difficult work at times, it is also very fulfilling because we know how valuable it will be to fellow researchers. Speaking for myself, I have felt the spirits of many of these people and know that they are just as eager for their records to be easily available as their descendants are to find them. Marsha Buck
