Family story says my husband's father's FORD family from NY state, was connected to an ELLIS family. I found one reference to a Charles FORD who married an ELLIS from Washington Co., NY. Family story also says a member of this same ELLIS family was a rider for the Pony Express. After much searching, I found the site for the list of Pony Express riders: http://users.ccnet.com/~xptom/names.html At the top of one column is listed: J. K. ELLIS (Eureka!) Now all I have to do is find out who J. K. ELLIS is (ha!). Does anyone on the list have any idea, hint, clue, info on this J. K. ELLIS ????? PenWeb, in Florida

While I've been puttering about for a long while, I've never gotten into the nitty gritty nuts'n'bolts of actually tracking it all down. Two reasons: lack of cash and inability to travel. This list provided me with the means of doing a lot of research on the computer. Now for my own request. There was (is?) an Ellis site put up by a lady named Pennington. The site was on AOL and had (it's reported) a LOTTA stuph on the Ellis family name. Wellll, unfortunately, it is listed just *everywhere* but does NOT come up. I get 404 Not Found. My letters to Ms Pennington were bounced as undeliverable. And that site seems (If I hear correctly) to be the ne plus ultra of Ellis sites. *sigh* Anyone remember it and if it has a new URL? Also, I have a call in to ransom Ellis. thanks to researching the archives of this mailgroup, I found out about the book he wrote about Ezekiel Ellis, my great great uncle or grandfather. I'll find out which soon. Woo ho! Thank you ALL for this mailgroup! wish me luck. Sylvia Stevens "Indeed? Then I am the softer option, am I? I got two replies (so far) about credit for the sites I posted. Great! I tried to find out who to acknowledge and got only a surname list site posting. Here is credit where credit is due! (Don't flame if sites no longer function or have changed. Just send a nice thanks!) FIRST: from Duncan on the Morrow List Cindy: Since I recognize this as my links (with a few additions), please get the name of my former employer -- USGS -- right. It's the United States Geological Survey, NOT Service (I did not work for the Mapping Division, but still . . .). 8^) There is an irony, too. I sent this out to a couple folks who lost their bookmark lists with an explicit request they not post it -- a year or so ago I acquiesced in allowing my list of the time to be published and got flamed by people because some of the links were -- eventually -- out of date. I guess removing my name has the same effect. I really don't mind sharing, but I don't care to be abused for doing so. Now really, the one that gets doubting editorial comment is Kidon Media-Link under newspapers? That's personal. If you open the site you'll find my name in a blue bar across the page; click on it and its my home email address. A strictly noncommercial site, too, thank you, brought to you by a couple guys who think the world needs a better newspaper index site than we've seen elsewhere. And who put the weeklies page back in? The weeklies page wasn't drawing enough traffic to justify the work, so it's fading away. The third Kidon entry is Canadian papers and it still belongs. Duncan SECOND: (From Roy on the Ran-Clay List) The List you Posted is the results of some very dedicated work of JEFF STITH he has a web page that he maintains, and will Add any new legitimate web site to it if you will sent him the URL. His Web Page is called SIMPLY GENEALOGY and if it does not have every URL on Genealogy; It is because he hasn't found it or no one has sent it to him. That is what it says, I don't know him, but I have used his Information and I thank him Very Much The URL is http://www.qni.com/~jstith/gen/genlink.html Check it out and send him any URL You have that is not there, The way to contact him shown on the page. Roy so . . . now that we have some authors to thank . . . Thank you very much for your work and efforts! We all owe you a debt! Gratefully, CindyHMB ;-)
I'm hoping someone can help to identify these people I just found on my family tree maker CD #2-2034. I'm almost positive this is my family, but they have the families separated so I don't know how they all connect. I'm listing them as they are broken down (not connected in the file) so you can see what they are. Any information on any of these Ellis's would be appreciated so much. I'm hoping this Joshua Ellis is the son of Samuel Ellis (noted below) and someone can help identify not only his family, but his wife's family as well. My Joshua was born abt the same time and was in Iredell Co., NC at one point in time. Joshua Ellis Generation No. 1 1. JOSHUA1 ELLIS was born WFT Est. 1759-1788, and died WFT Est. 1813-1873. He married MARY ALLEN (?) WFT Est. 1800-1832. Child of JOSHUA ELLIS and MARY ALLEN (?) is: i. MARY FORD2 ELLIS, b. January 20, 1810, Statesville, NC; d. January 26, 1904; m. JEREMIAH BURNETT, December 22, 1831, NC. Samuel also had a son named James, but this person being listed as Private, makes it impossible for me to identify him. Samuel also had a grandson through Joshua named Allen , who also had a son named James Ellis, my great-great grandfather. He was born ca 1826 Iredell Co., NC. I have not been able to identify James's first wife, mother of my grandfather or his siblings, all born between 1859 and 1866-1867. James Ellis Generation No. 1 1. JAMES1 ELLIS was born Private. He met SARAH JACQUELINE TERRY Private. Child of JAMES ELLIS and SARAH TERRY is: i. JAMES2 ELLIS, b. Private; m. LESLIE ANN SMITH, Private. I do not know how these people fit in, but am sure they must be connected here somehow. Ellis Generation No. 1 1. ELLIS1 was born WFT Est. 1802-1829, and died WFT Est. 1855-1915. He married MARGARET GAITHER WFT Est. 1855-1880, daughter of ZACHARIAH GAITHER. Child of ELLIS and MARGARET GAITHER is: 2. i. MILTON GAITHER2 ELLIS, b. 1850; d. 1908. Generation No. 2 2. MILTON GAITHER2 ELLIS (ELLIS1) was born 1850, and died 1908. He 765-1794; d. WFT Est. 1771-1873. xi. MARGARET TOMLINSON, b. WFT Est. 1765-1794; d. WFT Est. 1796-1876; m. ALEXANDER REID, WFT Est. 1796-1832. xii. GEORGE TOMLINSON, b. WFT Est. 1765-1794; d. WFT Est. 1771-1873. I would appreciate any type of information on this. I would love to find something on this family. Thank you. Linda Spivey-Bjorklund

Please, could we add a locality in the subject line. There are, believe or not, several Middlesboroughs in the English speaking world. I am interested in Virginia, USA.
Hello! This is my first enquiry, having been receiving (and deleting) many 1000s of messages over the last few weeks, and having been an amused (& sad) byestander to some of the little squibbles recently. You seem like a friendly and very chatty group, though some of you seem rather sensitive for blunt Yorkshire folk ! So, I will try to be very brief, and very tactful, and hopefully wont offend anyone. As a newcomer to the world of InternetGenealogy, I would like to hear from anyone looking into Middlesborough Ellis family members circa 1850. Particularly interested in any links to a Diana Ellis - William Ellis - who unfortunately put 'Full Age' on their marriage certificate and who dont appear to have ever been born or even died ! - a definite show-stopper. Many thanks : Dave Ellis careof [email protected] (sorry if I said anything to offend)
I am looking for a descendant of my great grandfather John BARRETT of Idaho. His nephew ? ELLIS was with him at the time of his death. It has an index. It begins with the immigrant Edward Ellis (arrived in Surrey Co., Va. 1636), and traces all his descendants, up to about 1800, or 1850 at the latest. You probably won't find a copy for sale. There were only 100 printed in 1979. Ellis Cousins has a copy members can borrow, but I understand there is a waiting list. The LDS has it on microfilm, and you can borrow the film for a nominal fee. I have a photocopy of the book, and will try lookups within reason. BUT, the index is not sorted by date, county, or anything else except name. So if you are looking for William or John, you are on your own. There is also a wife index, so I can check by wife's maiden name, often a better bet. --David David B.
