Hi all, Please can anyone share with me any tips for Web-based/CD-based Genealogy? My experiences of genealogy were set aside some 10 years ago (pre-web) when I just got so sick of having to travel to London, and queue up in either the Census Office, or at St Catherine's House. In those days you then had to wait a couple of weeks for the appropriate Marriage/Death/ Birth Certificate - which was then usually the wrong one! I see the web has changed all this and modern researchers seem to have access to (their own CDs?) a whole mass of instant access to databases. Can anyone send me a few suggestions of what is available, suggestions for CD-must-haves, tools must-have, WEB-site must-know-abouts, 'Online databases' which are available, and general tips and tricks of this new approach to family research? Also what to avoid ! DO people still go to St.Cath;s house, or can you order up Certificates by email? For example - how accurate is the IGI database these days - it used to be very incomplete - listing ony 25% of names in some areas. Greetings all- I just joined this list, and would like to get some input if you would be so kind... I have been searching for the ancestry of Mildred Ellis, who married William White in Hanover Co., VA in 1799. I have found a couple of newspaper announcements for the marriage, but neither mentions Mildred's parentage. I had thought that Mildred was born in Hanover Co., and the only Ellis connection I could find in the previous generation was a John Ellis, who patented land near the White family in 1756. I recently found a Spotsylavania document referring to the orphans of Hezekiah Ellis, including a daughter Mildred. Since Hezekiah died in ~1771, this Mildred would be slightly older than I expected "my" Mildred to be (since her husband was born in 1773), but it doesn't seem impossible that they may be the same. Am I reaching? Does anyone have any information on either the Mildred in Spotsylvania or the Mildred in Hanover? Any connections between the Ellis families in these two counties? Were there many disparate Ellis families in colonial Virginia? Thanks all, for your time! Jen White

Does anyone have any information on this James ELLIS who married Elizabeth Tadlocks on 9 March 1866 in Orange Co., NC? I have a g-g-g grandfather James Ellis who I have been unable to identify his wife(s), other than one of them (m. 1871 Martha Jane Starnes) who is not a mother to any of his children. Help! I believe I have found by gg grandfather Simeon Ellis in Meigs County, OH in the 1850 Census. At that point, this Simeon is living in one household with a Joel Ellis and a Joel Ellis, Jr., so I can only assume that this is his father and brother. What makes me believe this is my Simeon, is that Simeon had a daughter Sarah Jane who was born in Meigs County in 1856. So the timing is right, since Sarah Jane was one of his older children. Now ... where did Joel Sr. come from ... and where did he go. I can't seem to find him anywhere before or after 1850. Any and all help appreciated. Sue
