I would like to introduce top the list. As you can see, I am an ELLIS. I am interested in information on the early Ellis' in Virginia, including any information on David Ellis who accompanied Captain John Smith. He was listed as one of the surviving "ancients" in 1620 but there was no information on whether he got married, had kids, etc. I am also looking for information on a John Ellis who was first listed in court records in the Tuckahoe Creek area (outskirts of RichmonD) in 1690 and was noted as being 30 years old at that time. John is a direct anscestor but we have been unable to get any information on his parents, where he was born, where he lived, etc. Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Bob

For some reason he went blind (unknow if it was permanate or temp.) and he had to put the children into an orphanage, Bennie was in the services, Lois was married and unable to take on 4 children and Della went and stayed with friends that allowed her to work for them for her keep (she did house work etc.) The 2 boys ran away from the orphanage, when Bennie returned from the services he went to get the baby (Mary Ada) and Ruth Agnes. He had to steal the baby out of a window at the orphanage and Ruth Agnes was already adopted out. Later in the 1920 census it states that J.J. was living back at home with Della and Mary Ada. This is a story that my Grandmother and the other children passed down to all of their children and the story that my mother has passed on to us. If anyone can add dates etc. to what I already have I will truly appreciate it, also I am looking for anyone who may have photo's I have no photos of the Ellis except a printed copy of Mary Ann Ellis and I would not mind sharing that with anyone that is interested in recieveing it. Does anyone have a Catharine Ellis born Jan 9, 1817 in Frederick Co., Md? She married William Oden on Jan 15, 1835 in Harrison Co., Ohio. William was born in 1803 in Maryland. William died in 1880 in Monroe Co., Ohio. Catharine died Jan 21, 1904. They are buried in Connor Ridge Cemetery, Monroe Co., Ohio. There were more Ellis' coming to California in the early part of the 20th century. Several descendants of Capt Albert Gallatin Ellis of Iowa (1835 OH - 1918 KS, son of Job Ellis & Hannah Job) made it to California, even including his wife after his death. Capt. Ellis' daughter, Ona Mary Ellis Smith (Jul 13 1870 - Jul 11 1934) and five of her six children, Frances Maude, Kathryn Louise, Harold Edwin, Howard Albert, and James Ellison arrived in San Jose on Thanksgiving day, 1913, to be near Ona's younger brother Roscoe Albert Ellis. Her husband had died on their Montana ranch so she had put the ranch management in the hands of a foreman and moved west. Already living nearby was her nephew Frederick Maxwell Jarvis (son of Elmer Parker Jarvis & Della Sarah Ellis, another daughter of Capt. Ellis.) Roscoe Albert Ellis (Feb 4 1873 - ?) was a published author and poet. He married Annie Crook. (I would very much like to learn more about Roscoe Albert Ellis, who is thought to have used the pen name Ross Ellis. If anyone out there knows about him, please help.) By 1919, Frances Maude Smith (Mar 25 1891 - 1964) had returned to Montana where she married Peter Frances LaValle, and Ona and the rest of her children had moved to the Los Angeles area. After Capt. Ellis' death in 1918, his wife, Alice Eleanor Nichols, moved to California, where she died, in Long Beach, in 1928. Her body was transported to Kansas to be laid to rest beside Capt. Ellis, at Lost Spring. Ona Mary Ellis (Smith), in addition to having raised six children, had been a successful writer with at least one book, and numerous magazine articles and poems published. She died at Glendale, CA, in 1934. James Ellison Smith (May 4 1910 - Dec 23 1993) legally changed his name to James Ellison in 1937, by which time he was a noted stage and film actor. He married Gertrude Florence Durkin. Howard Albert Smith (Jan 23 1900 - Jul 1976) was a Hollywood screen writer. He married Jane Gates. Harold Edwin Smith (Jan 23 1900 - Jun 15 1976) became the owner of a successful import-export firm in Seattle, Washington. He married Elizabeth Englehart. Kathryn Louise Smith (Apr 6 1896 - Nov 17 1988) was a nurse at the time of the infamous flue epidemic. She married Wilson Lee Rothrock Stone, a motion picture executive. The said Helen A. Ellis was the daughter of Charles L.Ellis, I, Cora Ruth Lyman Doty Houtz, resident of Denver, Colorado; married Charles W. Houtz; hereby apply for membership in the Society by right of descent from Edward Doty, passenger on "Mayflower," 1620, born 1619, died August 23, 1655, at Ply-- mouth, Mass.
