Hi Listers, I now think that my great grandfather, William James George Ellis may well have been married before he married my great grandmother, Maud. Hopefully I may be able to find out something at the archives next time I visit. But meanwhile, is there anyone out there who has links to the William James George Ellis on the 1881 census who is married to Eliza A and has three children, Mary A, Gertrude A, and William. Their address on the census is 38 Albion Street, Nottingham. Paul @ Nottingham --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). He seems to have been a rolling stone. It is an uncommon name, but I have never found him in the Carolinas, have you? No, the man below does not sound as if he could have had the two families in two different counties. Most Southerners did not own slaves. It is a myth that they were all rich plantation owners. Most Confederates were of the opinion that they were fighting for states' rights, not slavery. But, if they had slaves, they considered them to be their most valuable property. I am not commenting on whether this was a morally right decision. But, many were living off land speculation back then. I am sure that the Perrys even started out that way. Recent letter speculated that when the company owned by Micajah Perry & partner went broke, it was because some of the settlers in NC had not paid their bills, and Perry sons were sent in to take their land in payment, and that is why they all came to get the land at one time. Some say that the 7 brothers Perry were not really brothers at all. Who knows? But, back to Kinchen; maybe when things got rough for whatever reason, he sold out and moved on to where he hoped to get more land. He did not stay in Texas, either, as I understand it. I have never had any indication that the Ellises were wealthy. As ever, Lois >> Lois, I guess I don't understand what you are saying. Kinchen lived in the same place for about twenty years. That doesn't seem like much of a rolling stone to me. You say he owned property in both Butler and Conecuh Counties. I am not sure about that. I believe the county boundary changed. I don't know that for sure though. The Lucretia White you found in VA could not be our Lucretia White because ours was Lucretia Ellis now and had not been a White for many years. We don't even have proof that Kinchen's wife was a White. People say that, and I don't argue about it because there are too many other unanswered questions to care about for now. I just don't spend time and money on it right now. By saying he did not have slaves, I meant he was not wealthy. Not all people owned slaves of course, but most of the wealthy plantation owners did or they would not have been wealthy plantation owners. You are right that we have not found him in North Carolina. That is where the census says he was born. True, census are wrong many times, but ususally when a person has the same birthplace over several census periods it is closer to correct. Wynell

Diane, Sorry to hear about your computer troubles. It's not fun. I'll be here when you can send the ELLIS file you have. I have not found any SPARKS yet. Sorry. Have you found out yet what Lettie is short for? This is what I have on the THOMAS family, I'm not even sure which one is the right THOMAS family that my Sarah is really from. Sarah(Sally) THOMAS b:1/27/1838 + William P. ELLIS on 9/14/1857 in Ohio Co, Ky. Sarah died 3/30/1897 and is buried w/William in the Kelly Cemetery at Maceo, Ky (Daviess Co.) Their marriage records shows her given name as Sally THOMAS. I have found a Sarah THOMAS in both Hancock and Ohio Counties in Kentucky in 1850 as just about the right age. Since Sarah/Sally THOMAS ELLIS was born in 1838, she would be 11 or 12 in 1850. THOMAS family 1850 Hancock Co, Ky census: THOMAS, Doctor S. 38-blacksmith b:1812? Margaret 39 1811? William S.14 1836? Am searching for info on Matt E. Ellis (b.9/13/1844) (d. 4/4/1922 in the Confederate Soldiers Home of Georgia). Married 11/3/1874 to Nancy J. Phillips (b. 4/27/1849) (d. 1/15/1897). Both are buried in the Fain Cemetery, Calhoun, Georgia. Two sons that I know of, Harry (buried in Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, OK) and Harlan Columbus (buried in Muskogee, OK). Where was Matt born and who are his parents? Are there any other relatives? Who were Nancy J. Phillips' parents and where was she born? Where were Harry and Harlan born? What was Matt E. Ellis' full name? Did he have any siblings? Thanks to anyone who may be able to help me with the answers as I have had very little success in my search to these questions. June (Ellis) Carter
I am looking for ANY info on Miles Ellis who married Polly Bobbit in 1813. They were married in Warren Co. NC. They came to Montgomery Co. TN about 1815-1820. Miles and Polly had 7 sons and 4 daughters. I can only find one other person looking for this line and she isn't sure it is hers. Does anyone know anything about this family? They disappear in 1850. I think my GGGF, Miles Thomas Ellis (1832-190?), was a son but not sure. I think Miles and Polly probably died between 1840 and 1850 but who and where are their children???? Miles is part of the Edward Ellis line from Surry, VA. I have looked through all surrounding states for Miles. Thanks for any help. Debby
