Willis and his wife Adeline Harris, came to Holt County, Nebraska prior to the birth of their third daughter Edna Francis Elliott in 1885 on Eagle Creek near Turner where their fourth daughter, Margie Chloe Elliott was born. There were two older daughters Nellie Florence and Jessie M. born in Iowa. The family moved to Whitewood, Meade County, SD in about 1889. Willis, would be employed as a government scout at the Battle of Wounded Knee in South Dakota in December of 1890 and to have been in Fall River County in 1887 to prove on a homestead and pan for gold. During his life he was known to make his living building sod and stone homes, as a blacksmith, rancher, butcher, among other things. After their divorce in the early 1900s Adeline (Addie) would maintain a home in Anoka, Boyd County, Nebraska as well as spend extended periods of time with her sister Ida Harris Keeler, in Spencer.
