My Elliott is Jane, born in 1800 in Madison, KY. She was a well educated governess of Scottish-Presbyterian descent with "golden dark auburn hair, brown eyes". She apparently had her own horse which she rode to the various houses of the children she taught. One researcher suggests that her parents may have been John and Virginia Elliott but I have seen nothing to substantiate this. Jane married on 6 May 1824, Madison, KY to James M. Gentry (b. 27 Oct 1804 Virginia, d. 1889 Butler, Bates, MO). The marriage took place without the knowledge of the Senior Gentry. James was the eldest and very spoiled son of John P (son of Moses) Gentry. She had been his/the family's governess (she was only 4 years his senior). James in a fit of anger towards his father for freeing his slaves, decided to leave home and asked Jane to come with him. After their 1st four children were born they moved to Illinois near the home of a former acquaintance, Henry Davenport. Two Davenport boys married 2 of their girls, John Milton Gentry (my line) married Angeline Davenport. Jane died Jan 1880 and is buried in the Little Sandy Graveyard in Morgan, IL.
