Elliott, 70, a United Methodist pastor in northern Illinois for 35 years, served the last two visiting the sick and new members of the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn. A resident of Wheaton, he died Sunday in Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Rev. Elliott served as pastor of Shirland-Owen Center, Shirland, Ill.; Southfield United Methodist Church, Chicago; Rockton United Methodist Church, Rockton; Faith United Methodist Church, Lisle; Grace United Methodist Church, Blue Island; Trinity United Methodist Church, Chicago; and St. Thomas United Methodist Church, Glen Ellyn A native of Aurora, Rev. Elliott graduated from Naperville High School and Wheaton College. He served in World War II and played in the U.S. Army Band. He then graduated from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Rev. Elliott was past president of both the Blue Island and the Glen Ellyn Clergy Councils. He was also past president of the Blue Island Rotary Club. "As one of his former parishioners put it, he was a man `who went above and beyond the norm' in caring for other people," said his daughter, Carolyn Excell. "He was well thought of and had a real way of empathy for people either having problems or needing help." He is also survived by his wife, Frances; and a son, James. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Leonard Funeral Home, 565 Duane St., Glen Ellyn. Elliott, who was a pastor at several northern Illinois United Methodist churches during a 35-year period, died Sunday. The Wheaton resident died in Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove. He was 70. For the last two years, the Rev. Elliott was a visitation pastor who looked in on the sick and visited new members of the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn. He was retired from St. Thomas United Church in Glen Ellyn. Before that, he was assigned to the following United Methodist churches: Trinity in Chicago, Grace in Blue Island, Faith in Lisle, Rockton (Ill.), Southfield in Chicago and Shirland-Owen (Ill.) Center, where he began his career. The Rev. Elliott, a native of Aurora, graduated from Wheaton College and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. During World War II, he played in an Army band. He belonged to the Rotary clubs in Rockton, Blue Island and Glen Ellyn. He also was a past president of the Glen Ellyn and Blue Island clergy councils. Surviving are his wife, Frances; a son, James, and a daughter, Carolyn Excell. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist of Glen Ellyn, 424 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn.
