In 1847 in Rockingham, North Carolina he married Mary B Douglass also from VA. On the 1850 & 1860 censuses they were in Union, South Carolina where all their children were born. William's occupation was listed as a tinman and a mechanic. William joined the Confederate Army and was a private in The 18th South Carolina Infantry. He was in his forties and was later discharged because of his age. On the 1870 census they were in DeSoto Co, Mississippi. William and his daughter, Eliza, died there in 1870 possibly from a yellow fever outbreak. William could possibly have had a sister named Maryan who married a James Woodall in 1849 in Rockingham, NC.
