    3. Chuck, when you posted yesterday about Andrew it sent me on a search for other posts as I remembered that we had talked about Andrew in the past...being the forgetful person that I am I had forgotten about some of the posts so I found this... I pulled my maps out and wanted to let you know that in 1790 my map shows that York county was comprised of current Adams & York counties.  But by 1800 York had its current boundary as did Adams. Erie was called teh Erie Triangle in 1790 and supposedly wasn't sold to PA until 1792, however PA claims they bought Erie from the Indians in 1789.  But it was incorporated into Allegheny County until1800 when it was by then a county on its own.  Allegheny had been split by 1800 into Erie, Crawford, Mercher Beaver, Butler, Allegheny and a couple of other parts of other counties.   Sometime between 1810 & 1830 Cumberland split into 2 counties, Perry & Cumberland so that by 1830 was it's 2 current counties. Dauphin was comprised of Dauphin & part of Lebanon in 1790, but by 1830 was divided into its 2 current counties. I'm not sure that this will help anything but thougth I'd throw it out. I got the year maps from the, Map Guide to the US Federal Censuses, 1790 - 1920 by William Thorndale & William Dollarhide (ahhhDollarhide :) I thought I'd found some PA maps online but not sure where..I"ll search for them. Supposedly, the 3 brothers, Thomas, William & Andrew came to America and lived too far from each other to remain in contact...my family seems to indicate that they came together but I don't know so will think maybe they didn't.  But if they did they would have arrived about 1787ish.  Thomas went to Washington County but took him maybe 13 years to get finally to Jefferson County Ohio. Again I don't know.  If they arrived in Baltimore, they would have taken that southern route possibly although I need to do more research about the travel routes then. Thinking about what might have drawn them places I have to think that maybe they ended up with family.  His wife's family had arrived earlier..most died in the Faithful Steward wreck but some could have been in PA...hard to know. Ok anyway, just thinking..and wanted to pass along the map info although late... vera ________________________________ From: Charles Elliott <chukndee@ix.netcom.com> To: elliott@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, September 20, 2009 5:59:35 PM Subject: Re: [Elliott] Is Elliott English or Scottish? To Roland, In the 1800 PA census, there is an Isaac ELLIOTT in Washington County, Finley Twp. There is also an Isaac ELLIOTT, Esq., and a Benjamin ELLIOTT in Delaware County, Lower Darby Twp. I haven't looked at the actual census records, since neither name connects with my line, yet. You raise some interesting questions about the PA counties back in the 1800 to 1820 period. I only have maps that go to 1835 and they look a lot like the current county layout. Reading from east to west along the Maryland border, the counties are Lancaster, York, Adams, Franklin, etc. Above York county on the east bank of the Susquehanna is Dauphin county and Cumberland county lies north of York and Adams on the west bank. Now, the later census records of my Thomas ELLIOTT say he was born in York county (no township) in 1807. I have not been able to find Thomas' father, Andrew anyplace in PA in the 1810 census. There is a single man named Andrew ELLIOTT in Erie county in 1800, a remote possibility. However, in the 1820 census, Andrew ELLIOTT appears in Cumberland county, North Middleton Township, with a family that matches in ages and sexes with the data I related in an earlier message. I guess I do need to find a good circa-1820 map, because the current PA map has no North Middleton, in fact no Middleton, anywhere in PA. Middletown is in Dauphin county just south of Harrisburg. If anyone can put me to a source of early 1800 maps of the area, I will be grateful. Cheers, Chuck Elliott Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
