I knew about some of it, but not the p.388 stuff. NEat to hear your Gr Gfthr worked for John ! Yes, they were very large at one point. Eventually it all failed I guess and the sons moved to Minnesota. I am very curious what became of the company, how long it hung on after John died. I know there was a second fire, but I thought he rebuilt again after that one. Just seems weird that I cant find much info on the company. I looked up on Google earth for the house last summer and found it was gone. I have a picture of the house. It was at the end of the complex. It was a beautiful Mansion. My Dad (Roger), I (Steve), am using his account),has a chandelier from the house over his dinner table. Since you live in London, maybe I can ask you some questions about the area, since I doubt I will get there anytime soon. He was born to Charles Hull and Louise Marsh Elliott Sept. 9, 1928, in Alexandria, Va. Charles graduated from Washington and Lee High School, Arlington, Va., and Waynesburg College, Pa., where he met and married Bettie Lou "Betz" Riefer in 1953. Charles was commissioned in the U.S. Navy after completing Officers Candidate School in Newport, R.I. His Naval ports included Philadelphia, San Diego and Norfolk, where he served at the Fifth Naval District Headquarters, first on active duty, then as a civilian until retirement in 1985. During that time he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve and then retired as Commander. He is survived by his wife, Betz; a devoted daughter, Karen Elizabeth and husband John Mason Thorp, of Arlington, Va.; two grandchildren, Emma Katherine and David Elliott Thorp; a brother, John and his wife Margaret, of Leesburg, Va.; and nieces and nephew John Jr., Margaret Ann and Elizabeth. While serving in Norfolk, Charles and his family lived in Virginia Beach where they became charter members of King's Grant Presbyterian Church, where they both worshipped and served for more than 40 years. In 2004, Charles and Betz became residents of Green Ridge Village retirement community in Newville. They made Big Spring Presbyterian their church home where a number of Charles' ancestors worshipped since the 1700s, as evidenced by their graves in the church cemetery. Charles is and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is remembered for the integrity of his character and a readiness to share his talents. His faith was strong; he was compassionate, fair and had a well-honed sense of humor. He lives now with his Heavenly Father where his family is assured that he is no longer bound by the pain and frustration of Earth's ills and disease. A memorial service will be led by Pastor William C. Beck at Green Ridge Village in the Garden Court at 2 p.m. June 14. Charles' body has been donated to a medical school through the PA Humanity Gift Registry. His cremains will eventually be inurned in the columbarium of his former church in Virginia Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to Green Ridge Village, 210 Big Spring Road, Newville, PA 17241; Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Corporation St., Newville, PA 17241; or the charity of your choice. My gggrand Benjamin & Mary are buried in Walkertown, NC at Loves United Methodist in Walkertown. He has a family plot. Benjamin, Mary, son Benjamin George, daughter Susan Elliott Hester in family plot. Susan's husband Jeptha Hester is at Mt Gur, Kernersville.I have Benjamin and Marys marriage bond. that was in Stokes County. Have made contact with Joan Hester King, her father is decended down thru Susan. I did a lot of research on Randolph Co Elliotts, Mostly quaker. Most of our line is Methodist, Baptist etc. I have also traced Thoma Elliott B1723 for Property and family in Fairfax Co. Virginia. He Purchased 400 A in Pittsylvania co va.went down 1798 did not move family, however sone #2 William and Son #3 John Moved 1789 and stayed. Thomas died sometime after 1798. In the census of 1790 there are three related Elliotts that are of interest to me: Abraham Sr. and Jacob are brothers and Abraham Jr is the son of Abraham Sr. I can't do from memory if there are other Elliotts in the census, but I could probably sort them out as well. I believe that there is another Elliott family that moves to the area from Perquimans County, NC (my Elliotts come down the Great Wagon Road from Pa in the mid 1700's from PA.) I don't know if the Perquimans Elliotts are related or not. But the family is definitely of Quaker heritage.
