Author: bjdurrenberger Surnames: Elliott, Carney Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elliott/4565.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: To: csteel98 I have some speculations about the origins of John Winford Elliott that are as yet unproved. More research is needed. I am a descendant of Joseph Elliott of Jackson Co., Alabama through his daughter Mahala who married Absalom Hillin. Winford was Joseph's son, and brother to Mahala. My facts, questions and speculations: 1840 Census, Jackson Co., AL, p.8 Windford (Wintford) Eliot, male 30-40 female 50-60, 2 males under 5, and one female under 5 (This is Winford because he is near his father and others in the family in 1840) 1850 Census, Franklin County, Missouri, M432-#399, 31st district, p. 83 Winford Elliott, m,w,37, Woodchopper, b. in Alabama William, m,w,13, b. in Alabama John, m,w,11, b. in Alabama (The only Winford Elliott I have found in 1850. None of the family in Franklin Co., MO, but some family members in Reynolds County, MO and connections in Cape Girardeau County, MO.) Just below in this census (1850 Franklin Co. MO), is woodchopper Jarvas Kearney w,m,19, b. in TN Mahala, 15,w,f, b.in Alabama (------Now---- What if Mahala was the daughter of Winford??? She would be the daughter 5 and under listed in the 1840 AL census, and John and William would be the boys under 5.) 1860 STEWART COUNTY, TENNESSEE District 2, Indian Mound P. O., p. 30 (downloaded from census online at rootsweb.com) 227/229 John ELLIOT 18 m w wood chopper Tn Isabelle CARNEY 15 f w Tn Mary 14 f w Tn Louisa 13 f w Tn William 10 m w Tn John 8 m w Tn Sue 2 m w Tn (In 1860, we have John Elliot, 18, living with a whole passel of Carney Kids, and his occupation is listed as woodchopper. This census states he is b. in TN, but subsequent censuses state he is b. in AL.)... So, I am asking if you have proof for connecting John Winford Elliott to Winford Elliott, of Jackson Co., AL? Who are these Carney children living with John Winford Elliott in 1860 and what was the connection? I had seen the Lamb book and there seems to be a wealth of information about the Matlack family. I have not spent a lot of time on it, as I just discovered the link last month. Thank you for listing the children. I have researched Sarah (may be Susannah?) who married George Dewees. Peter is living with them in 1870, as well as a Rebecca Whiteman, who I suspect is a daughter of Peter. Elmyra married a Nelson. I had found the census records, but there seem to be a number of Peter Whiteman's. I am planning a trip to the PA Hist. Soc. Have you already gone through the Amer. M. Cemetery info? I have the death certs from the LDS pilot search project. I have corresponded with a reasearcher of Peter Whiteman the printer. I also suspect a link to the VEALE family as another photo is captioned "Aunt Becky Veale Hubbard". Rebecca VEALE, dau. of Moses & Elizabeth, married Alfred H. HUBBARD. It is so frustrating to have the "link" and not know how it fits. I can suspect all I want, but I need to find proof that Catarine was a Whiteman.
