    1. [ELLIOTT] Finally I got the worm out of my computer
    2. Janet
    3. Hi It was not easy!!!! It had come from someone on these genealogy list. I spent 5 hrs today cleaning out my computer. The badtrans virus is not a trojan after all, it is a worm that goes thru your files. This is all because like a dummy, (when I should know better) I went and opened an attachment that I thought was 1841 census, I had asked about who had a copy of the census or where I could find an earlier census. I had 2 virus protections on my computer and I thought that if one was disable the other would work properly. Will it did not. And the Trojan remover that I downloaded was not able to remove the thing, but only change the file that was infected, so the virus was still in my computer. The file KERN32.EXE was changed to KERN32.EX$ and INETD.EXE was changed to INETD.EX$, which stopped the emails from going out, but did not remove it. Eventually it would worm its way thru your programs and gradually infect the files. What a job getting it removed, cost me 29.00 on the phone with a tech, actually 3 techs. Wore down 2 battery phones. Almost had a nervous breakdown, went without lunch and was dying of thirst and my ear is sore. So PLEASE everyone be careful of those attachments. Janet

My virus shield evidently did not catch this. I went off line as soon as I saw my outbox sending out emails. if you did already go to this site, I found it was the only way to get rid of it. Even though I had another virus shield. http://www.angelfire.com/or/matney/page1.html I hope no one was affected. Janet

    1. [ELLIOTT] Re: this new virus and how it works
    2. Greetings ~ Since you are replying to the digest mode . . . I must tell you and other's on the List, that some people receive the digest mode mail as attachments . . . And as long as they came DIRECTLY from the rootsweb server they are safe to open . . . This somewhat new virus that is making the rounds of lately, works like this. It attaches it's self to all un-opened mail, so when the computor with the virus is turned on and or is downloading it's mail, it automatically replies to any UN-OPENED mail directly to the FROM individual and not to Rootsweb, who was only redirecting the mail to them . . . Say you reply to a message you recived from the List, or you are posting a brand new message to the List, it goes through the rootsweb server, and then is redirected to every one of the subscriber on the List . . . Now here is were the problem starts. KEEP IN MIND rootsweb does not forward viruses ! Rootsweb stripes ALL attachments and ALL HTML text is blocked ! Now say some subscriber on the List recieves your message re-directed from Rootsweb and that person HAS the Bad Trans virus on there computor . . . it will instantaniously reply to your message "before they even open it", directly to YOU with the evil attachment !!!! DO NOT OPEN THIS ATTACHMENT and you will be safe . . . this bad trans virus comes under many difforent subject lines, and most likely will not even be of the same topic your original message to the List was covering . . . So in short if the message is a reply to your posting to the List, and came directly to you from Rootsweb IT IS SAFE ! All the List's that I am personally subscribed to under the digest mode, if I view those through my webmail account, they come as attachments, but if I download them to my email program here locally they don't. I also understand AOL deleivers mail that was in diegest mode, and or the file was too large as attachments . . . Now if the reply to your message came from a fellow List member . . . and the the subject line and or the text body doesn't match your topic AND it has an attachment with it "DO NOT OPEN the attchment" !!!! In a NEW email [do not reply to the one with the attachment] contact both, the List owener and the individual the attachment came from, and let them know you have received this attachment . . . IF the individual truely DOES have the virus, you will be getting another message with an attachment again . . . DO NOT OPEN IT EITHER, and make sure you notify the List owner, so that the individual can be deleted from the List of subscriber's for this List . . . All List owner's, [in the case you don't have their personal email addy] weather it's the Elliott List or any other List can be reached by emailing to LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com just subsitute the LISTNAME with what ever the List name is, and rootsweb will redirect your message to the correct owner of the List. I use Trend's PC-cillin 2000 virus program, and currently you can download a free fully functional 30-day evaluation copy -- Go to: http://www.antivirus.com/pc-cillin Also Trend Micro advises you to scan your systems with Trend HouseCall a free virus scanner at http://housecall.antivirus.com They will scan your system FREE for any of the current viruses out there . . . you might want to pass that info on to the poor soul who opened the attachment they got from someone else and then unknownly passed it on to you . . . I am NOT making a sales pitch here for Trend's PC-cillin 2000, and I have no connection to them, other than I use their program . . . I know of several other people who have Norton or one of the other anti-virus programs and they use this housecall web site as a second back up check . . . *********************************** a dweller on the path by the hedge *********************************** your friend in Christ; Ken Hedgpeth ~ Arcadia, CA Admin. of the Stonebraker-L and the Hedgpeth-L America's Family Safe Internet -- http://www.viafamily.com
