Patrick & Catherine ELLIOTT emigrated from Ireland (perhaps Enniskillen, Fermanagh) to Ontario, Canada about 1855 with 4 children; Hannah b. 1835 (m. Henry HOLMES) John b. 1836 (m. Mahala ABRAMS) Allen b. 1846 (m. Georgiana HALL, d/o Giles) Mary A. b. 1854 (m. Leen CHAFFIN) That family immigrated to Jefferson County, NY about 1861 or 1862, and settled in Lorraine Town, near Adams Town. About 1873 the family moved to Harlan County, Nebraska (NE) and were among the earliest settlers to acquire homestead property. They were instrumental in establishing and developing the Freewater area in Antelope Twp. John Elliott moved to Bird City in Cheyenne County Kansas (KS) for a period of time in about 1883. The entire immigrant family is buried in Freewater Cemetery just East of Ragan in Harlan County, NE. I have always wondered why I have not found other "Irish Elliotts" with the name Patrick - it would seem to be a good Irish name.

Looking for information on three Elliott brothers from Gloucester County, Virginia. All were born circa 1740-1760. Their names are: Robert. Married a Ms. Dobson. Had a daughter (name unknown) and a son PETER (1774-1863). Information on Peter and his offspring can be found at: http://www.wscottsmith.com/elliotthouse/history/elliott.htm He ended up in Evansville, Indiana where his two sons, Joseph and William, lived. Joseph. Moved to Baltimore, MD. Thomas. Moved to Richmond, VA. Only one child lived to adulthood-a daughter. All three of these brothers supposedly served in the Revolution. I'm also trying to connect these three mid-18th C. brothers to a Col. Anthony Elliott from 17th C. Gloucester County, Virginia. He had three sons: William, Thomas, Robert. W. Roland, Your message caught me attention because of the reference to PA for you James Elliott. My wife has an Elliott line. The earliest member to be identified is John Elliott b.abt.1810 PA. In the 1850 census he, his wife, Polly, and their 7 children are living in Schylkill Co., PA. A son born abt.1840 was named James. Could this family be related to your PA family? Looking for ANYONE who might be working on the ELLIOTT family of Buffalo Township, Kershaw County, SC. You'll recognise this immediately and know who you are. Let's compare notes. I'm thinking the ''mother ship'' dropped them there in the late 1700s. Bill Hughes kinseeker4@earthlink.net
This is really a great idea, wish all lists would do this. Roland, you are a professional and I would like to ask you a sincere question. My g-grandmother was Martha Elliott (unknown middle name). She was born October 11, 1842. I don't know much about her, but my dad is 95, still living, in Burlington Kansas, and has always stated she was "Pennslyvania Dutch". Her obituary states she was born in KY, but came to Missouri when 17, where she met and married my g-grandfather William Penn Makepeace. (January 20, 1860) Everyone but my dad has been gone many years, but I do remember my grandfather also telling me his mom was "Pennslyvania Dutch". They were always proud of this. I just visited my father this past month,(l live 1000 miles from him) and recorded him and he once again insisted that Martha Elliott was "Pennslyvania Dutch" My father is very alert and in May, the small Burlington paper had a large article on my father when he turned 95. I have written many places for information with no success, (genealogical and historical societies, as well as libraries, usually no reply) I cannot find anything on the census. Roland, is there any way that I can find out who her father / mother etc. was by writing certain places, etc.? I would appreciate any advice you could possibly give me on how to go about obtaining who she derived from. Thank you and to all on the list, I really enjoy reading about the "Elliott" family. Sue, You are doing a great job! My father is Walter Emerson Elliott b.12/8/1940 Mt. Victory, OH...living My grandfather was Michael Allyn Elliott b 3/1916 Ridgeway, OH d.9/1981 Bexar Co, TX I thought I had this thing figured out, but the 1920 census threw me off. Papa Mike said he was adopted from some Harpers. His birth certificate and Soc Sec Application show his parents as Emerson Early Elliott (b. 3/8/1880 Logan Co, OH d. 3/1969 Kenton, OH) and Florence Hatcher (b. 12/2/1884 Big Springs, OH. But the 1920 census (when he should have been 4 years old), he is not listed in this household! So now we are back to square one. Can anyone Help? Kim Elliott Neese Montgomery, AL

I am one of the newbe's. I only have one Elliott/Elliot or Eliott in my line right now. My great-grandmother was Maria Louisa Eliott (that's the way it is spelled on the cemetery records. She was married to George Matthews. George was from Ireland. Not sure about Maria. They were from Ontario Canada in the Peterborough and Stratford area. Maria is buried in Mountview Cemetery in Cambridge Ontario. George and Maria had four daughters. Anne, Martha Louisa Eunice Olive (all one name-went by Olive), Myrtle and Stella. Would be great to make a connection somewhere. Don Harrison
I'd like to join in here also. I've posted my lines before, but I'm sure there are a lot of new ones on this list. This is what we suspect, but it's not proven Jesse Elliott ca 1777 m. Constance ? Elliott Island, Dorchester Co., MD. children: John Snead Elliott b. 1798 Abel Elliott b 1805 Maria Elliott b. 10/10/1807 James K. Elliott b. 04/06/1809 Benjamin B. Elliott ca 1816 A lot of them stayed in Dorchester Co. or on the Eastern Shore of MD., but some of them went to Calvert County, MD. Abel is my direct ancestor, but this is a very hard tree to climb! I'd appreciate talking to anyone connected to the Md. Elliott family.
Hi Folks, My Elliott line has been a brick wall for me for quite some time. My grandmother was Ellen Gladys Elliott b. 1889 in Graves Co., KY. Her father was Thomas Ivey Elliott probably b. in 1860s resided in Graves Co. but I am unsure where he was born, Thomas married Parthenia Miller. Thomas' father was Samuel (or possibly Sandford/Sanford) Elliott. Not sure about Samuel's birth but probably in 1830s. He married Sarah Jane Bean. A researcher on a collateral line has said that unsubstantiated information provided to him shows Samuel as being born in Stewart Co., TN but I have not found records in Stewart Co. to confirm this. Thomas and his wife Parthenia and Samuel and wife Sarah Jane are buried in Bean Cemetery near Farmington in Graves Co., KY. Any information appreciated. Thanks, Gary
The Elliott's were Scots who after getting themselves killed over and over at the border wars with England, joined the Army and fought the Dirty, unwashed Celts in Ireland and took a fancy to their women, also the Scots gravitated to the non catholic religions and were force out of the UK as the Irish Elliott's were forced out during the famine and even before.I have traced them to 1215 at Runnymead,1066 with Willy the Conq and to the Dooms Day book in 1000.The name John in America comes from the Famous John[Elliott] the Apostle who translated the bible into a Indian tongue.R ----- Original Message ----- From: "Don & Ethel Harrison" <donethel@chibardun.net> To: <ELLIOTT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 17, 2002 5:29 Subject: [ELLIOTT] > I am one of the newbe's. > > I only have one Elliott/Elliot or Eliott in my line right now. My name is Carolyn Sue Smith and I am new to the group. We have traced our line back to Curtis Elliot in Montgomery Co., VA. Curtis is on the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census for Montgomery Co. On the 1810 census there is a John and William living close by. On 1820 A robert and William living near Curtis and on 1830 Robert and William are listed again. I believe that William is the son of Curtis and that Robert might be the father but can't prove this. Curtis was married to Betsy Elizabeth Bell and is mentioned in the book "Early Adventurers On The Western Waters Volume I The New River of Virginia in Pioneer Days 1745-1800" by Mary B. KEgley and F. B. Kegley. There is information on the Bell line but no information on the Elliot line. Children of Curtis and Betsy were: John William Nancy Martin Peggy Mary (Polly) Stephen Thomas Lucy Lewis (my line) Jonathan Elizabeth It would seem that Betsy may have died in childbirth in 1817 where Elizabeth was born. Curtis then married Polly Pate 11 Nov. 1819 according to "A Brief of Wills and Marriages in Montgomery & Fincastle Counties, VA 1733-1831" by Anne Lowry Worrell. They had two children: Rachell Elliott 1820 Mary Jane 1821 All of the above children are mentioned in the will of Curtis Elliott which was probated June 1833. Lewis Elliott was born 1805 in VA Died 29 Sept 1865 in Jersey Co., IL and is buried in the Elliott Cemtery. Information that I have is that he left VA at the age of 20 and went to Grayson Co. KY and married Elizabeth Reddish daughter of Benjamin Reddish. There son David born 20 Nov. 1831 and died in 1912 married Nancy Reddish daughter of Stephen Reddish. There son John William Elliott born 22 Sept. 1867 in Shipman, IL and died 1937 in Carl Junction, MO. married Sarah E. Nicholson in Cherokee County, Kansas 30 Nov. 1890. Which brings us to my Grandmother May Elliott who married Louis George Reis. Would love to hear from anyone that might have connections to this line. Thanks, Sue

My Elliot is Mary Malisia (or Melissa or any number of spellings) Elliot. I have no information as to who her parents were, but she had a brother named Joe. Mary Elliot was born on May 2, 1859 in Ohio. She married Henry Puterbaugh on Dec. 23 1873 in Michigan they had four children in Michigan; Osborn (b. 1875), Almyra Oralice (b. 1878), Jennie (b. 1880) and Jake Abraham (b. 1882). According to family legend, Mary Elliot Puterbaugh left Michigan in the company of her parents and brother and children. The went to Arkansas where her parents bought and sold many pieces of property. Henry Puterbaugh promised to join her there as soon as he sold their property in Michigan. He never showed up and we discovered that he married twice more in Michigan, fathering another family. Her daughter Almyra Oralice married Lewis Thomas McCoy in Arkansas. Mary Elliot Puterbaugh is buried in Camp Springs Cemetery in Kingsland, Arkansas. There is a headstone for her brother, but it has no dates. Anybody with information on this family?
