    1. Re: [Elliott] Seeking Elliott/Ellet/Ellit family from Norfolk, England
    2. Dan, Thanks for the info. My understanding had been that all Elliotts & variations were originally from Scotland and that they were scattered sometime around the 1500-1700's by King James the 6th of Scotland when he became King James the 1st of England. See, you learn something every day. Jackie

    3. Here are some, National Geographic/IBM Project, FamilyTree DNA, Relative Genetic. I started with the National Geographic Project, then moved my results over to the Family Tree DNA. When my results came back pointing to Southern England and not Scotland, I also had it done with Relative Genetics to confirm the first results, which they did. I will say that Relative Genetics processing was significantly faster than National Geographic. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Dan Elliott Sent: Friday, February 09, 2007 12:06 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Elliott] Seeking Elliott/Ellet/Ellit family from Norfolk, England Hi there, No I am not. These comments from The Elliott (And Border Reivers) DNA Project as well as subsequent research regarding Haplogroup 1Ra, are as best I know the potential where abouts of my ancestors. "Your haplogroup is pretty clearly I1a - which is a subset or "subclade" of the overall haplogroup I. Judging from the geographical distribution of your closest matches in both the Family Tree DNA database and the international Y chromosome database at www.yhrd.org, your ancestors could have been Angles, Normans or Vikings. There were unlikely to have been native Britons. There was a group of Elliotts from Cornwall who spelled their name "Eliot". They were apparently unrelated to the Scottish Elliotts, and legend has it that they were descended from a Norman knight named William de Aliot. Your DNA signature would have been a very respectable one for a Norman. I noticed the mention of Devon and Somerset, which are adjacent to Cornwall, where the Eliots reputedly originated. Your DNA results are pretty clearly I1a. I wouldn't bother getting SNP-tested through Family Tree DNA, as they would only be able to tell you that you belong the overall "I" haplogroup - and that is already very obvious. I1a in Southern England could have many sources. The largest group of the early Puritans came from East Anglia, which was settled mostly by Angles and, later, by Danes. Also many Flemish settled in East Anglia in the late middle ages. The Y-chromosome haplogroup compositions of East Anglia and Denmark are virtually identical. Then, of course, there is the theory of a Norman origin for the Eliots of Southwest England. Not all Normans were descended from Vikings, but many were, and your haplotype could easily be of Norwegian origin - not directly, but by way of Normandy. There are, in fact, many Scots of Viking descent as well. There were also many Vikings and half-Viking, half-Gaelic settlers in Northwest England and in Galloway - both areas near where the Scottish Elliotts originated. There are actually two other Elliotts in my group with I1a signatures. The closest to you is only a 9/12 match unfortunately. Both of these Elliotts are from England too, but at least one of them claims a fairly detailed pedigree leading back to Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders. The main reason why I suggested that your Elliotts might be of Southern English origin, beyond your DNA signature, is the fact that they settled in Massachusetts in the 1600's." Has any male of your Tree had their DNA tested? It would be very helpful in the research for Elliotts in England. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected] >mailto:[email protected]">[email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of COLIN ELLIOTT Sent: Monday, February 05, 2007 11:03 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Elliott] William Elliott born 1805 in athlone. - Scottish? - Scottish?
