He had a Freeholder claim in 1769. Cant read the Barony. He came to America and landed in Maryland. It must have been on the eve or during the American Revolution. He may have been in it. He and his wife, Peggy, (probably Margaret) came right after they were married. (Family lore) There was a Rev. Martin who transported 5 shiploads of Scots-Irish from Belfast in 1772 to Chester County, S.C. Saintfield is 10 miles south of Belfast. These are supposedly somewhere online but I cannot find them. The next entry lists them in Fairfield County, S.C. about 1790. Fairfield is just south of Chester County. They had their 4 sons there: John b. 1791, Thomas b. 1793, Robert Henry b. 1797, and James Jr. All but Robert were in the War of 1812 in McWillie's Regiment. They recieved Bounties in Arkansas and moved there after 1820. James Sr., Peggy, and James Jr. died in S.C. about 1820. I am sure they orginally came from Scotland most likely Roxburgshire. Since County Antrim and County Down were the first settlements in Northern Ireland there may be another 100 years back to Scotland to find the rest of the family. Does anyone have any information on James Elliott Sr? I have looked in the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and all I could find is the Freeholder claim. Some have said that the other records would be in the church or parish holdings before 1800's. These are not online. Any information would be appreciated Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Had not thought of that particular "angle", since his mother, Bertha, became a widow in 1890, when Samuel was but 6 years of age, that is surely a possibility. Given her family connections, however, it seems rather unlikely she's have to resort to placing Samuel in such a place. Definitely worth checking into, though. Again, many thanks. Instead, most were orphans or the parents were ill, or unable to care for their child/children. Some were put in "county homes" for the aged or disabled. Often the county Court House has old ledger books of these "homes." Judy Florian Board Administrator Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was b. Sep-1884, son of Horace Jenckes "Harry" Elliott and Bertha Simms Foss. The only record I've managed to find on Samuel is the 1900 US Census for the Massachusetts Reformatory in Concord, MA. His mother had two children, Samuel, and a younger brother b. early 1886 who died in infancy. She was listed (incorrectly) in 1900 Census as "1/1" for childcount and "2/1" in 1910. This could indicate Samuel was still living in 1910, but I've been unable to find him in US Census records, beyond 1900. Should anyone happen to have information on Samuel Foss Elliott, I would be most interested in sharing his origins, with someone having information on him post 1900 census. I have contacted the Massachusetts Dept. of Correction, and it would seem no records remain of his incarceration, why he was imprisoned, when, and when/whether he left their "care". He listed his POB in 1900 as MA, but did not list POB for parents, so may not have listed his own, correctly. Search of MA Vital Records shows no Samuel Elliott that would completely match known information. Again, look forward to sharing/exchanging information. Author: cwhite02 Surnames: Elliott, Anderson, Hogarty, Luke, Langton, Karns Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elliott/6674/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Better Way, Minneapolis, Kansas, May 9, 1918, page 2: Margaret Elizabeth Anderson was born at Allegheny, Pa., November 18, 1840, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.W. Hogarty, early Sunday morning, April 28, 1918, aged seventy-seven years, five months and eighteen days. On October 31, 1859, she was united in marriage to Silas A. Elliott at Rock Island, Illinois. To this union eight children were born, five of whom preceded her into the great beyond. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mellie Hogarty of Ada, Kansas, Mrs. Mary Langton of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. Josie Luke of Topeka, Kansas. She was one of nine children, all of whom have now passed on except Mrs. Ellen Karns of Ada, Kansas. Her husband passed on before, thirty years ago. In the year 1869 the subject of this obituary moved with her husband and family to Cass county, Mo., and settled on a farm. Here they lived until 1873, when they moved to Ada, Kansas. After the husband's death she spent part of the time with her children and the other she spent at her home in Ada. She seemed to feel lonely because so many of her friends and loved ones were with her no more. She seemed anxious to pass on to her heavenly reward, but expressed a desire to live long enough to see all of the boys come home from the war. She united with the Baptist church at Rock Island, Ill., at the age of sixteen. In April 1876 she united with the Ada Baptist church and has been a faithful member for more than forty years. During the last few years she has not been able to attend services regularly but she loved her Lord and the cause of Christ. She was a splendid neighbor and citizen and will be greatly missed by all of her friends and loved ones. She leaves three children, twenty-four grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one sister, together with a host of friends and loved ones to mourn for her. Her last words were: "I am going Home to die no more." And so our dear sister is not dead, but passed on to be with Jesus and those who have gone on before. Funeral services were held from the Ada Baptist church, Tuesday afternoon, attended by a large congregation of friends and neighbors, Rev. H.F. Surles officiating. Interment was made in the Ada cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
