I have been out of the genealogy game for some time, but I am getting back into it. It is great to hear from you. Since my original query 10 years ago, I have learned a great deal more about this family. I can briefly summarize, first, my connection to the family. Your husband and I share common ancestors starting with Henry Crine Noyes and his wife Sarah Haighton Wilks. Henry and Sarah should be your husband's great-great-great grandparents, and they are my great-great-great-great grandparents. I descend from Henry and Sarah's son John Haighton Noyes, and your husband descends through their daughter, Amy Noyes, who married Henry Francis Elliot. From what I know, Henry and Amy had four children: Dorothy Noyes, Gladys Noyes, May Noyes and Lionel Noyes. Gladys and May appear to have died unmarried, while Lionel married twice- first to his cousin Doris Elliot Noyes, and secondly to Mary Adeline Orme, with whom he had two children: Annie and Lionel Francis Noyes. I don't know anything further about these children. Your husband's great-grandmother would then have been Dorothy Noyes Elliot, who married William Alexander Hungerford in 1902. As far as I can tell, William died in 1913 and Dorothy dies sometime after 1930. I was aware that they! possibly had a child Amy, and you confirmed this. Burke's Peerage confirms she was born in 1907, as does her birth notice in The Times. Amy is also mentioned in her great-aunt Constance Chichester's (née Noyes) will, in which she is provided a sum of money. That's as far as I can find information about Amy. It is great to know that she has descendants. I would love to know more about her, your husband's family and whatever you may know about the Elliot's. I can provide you with further information about the Elliot family from what I have found. They are closely tied with the Noyes family (my primary research focus) and married into each others families at least three times. If you and your husband have any interest in his Noyes relatives, I have a very large amount of interesting information on this family as well. I hope to hear from you soon! Author: Mirandaandrich Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elliot/391.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Cameron, I am also very pleased to hear from you - I am also an infrequent ancestry researcher and had only just logged on after some months away. Firstly, Amy. She remained an only child. Her mother Dorothy moved to Ireland after her husband died, presumably to be with her husbands family. However they were mainly staunch Anglo-Irish Anglicans and since she got involved in Sinn Fein she was soon a bit of a rebel. they maintained contact but I think she was a bit of an outsider. She also did some interesting work campaigning for better treatment of prisoners, and for animal welfare. She died in 1947. Unfortunately she and her daughter Amy appeared to have become estranged sometime in he 1920s or 1930s, such that ,y father in law never met her, or any of her Elliot, Noyes, Hungerford family, until recently. perhaps one of the reasons for this might be because Amy had a long term affair with a married Irish lawyer called Richard McGonigal, from which she had two children - Elizabeth Mary and my father in law, Richard, both of whom retained the name Hungerford rather than taking the McGonigal name. Elizabeth had six chi! ldren - john and James, twins, born 1966, Rosemary born 1969, Judith born 1972, Tom born 1974 and William born 1981 I think. Richard just had my husband, Richard. but we made up for this by having four children - Fergus born 2006, Cecilia born 2007, Claudia born 2009 and Harriet Born 2011. Elizabeth married a man called John Bede Howell in 1965 and all the Howell children have their own children so if you want more info, happy to provide it! I did not know Lionel Noyes Elliot had a daughter, Annie, as well, and would love to know more about her. I too have no more information about Lionel F.N. Noyes Elliot, his son, except that he appears to have been an antique bookseller in Lewes. I am sad not to have any pics of Lionel, Gladys or May. We're have one grainy one of Dorothy which I will try to send you in the next couple of weeks. As for Henry Francis Elliot, Dorothy,s father, we also, sadly, have no pictures of him, or of his wife Amy. We probably have the same information as you about their life in Ruyton eleven towns and then in SW London. I know Amy died in 1902 and that Henry remarried, a lady called Suzannah I think, of Irish catholic heritage, I will check this and let you know. I would love to see more information about Noyes and Elliots. in the Elliot side I have not yet been able to go any further back than William Henry Elliot, as records then become very local and the name William is a bit common! I have some idea which is his birth register but it doesn't,t yield much further info. I do have a photo of him which I will also try to send you. I am aware of Henry Crine Noyes and a bit of his father, and that there are lots of Noyes records, but have not yet had time to go further back - so we would both really appreciate any further info about noyes.! Where are you located? If UK perhaps we may even be able to meet sometime. otherwise we would both very much like to remain in touch and exchange information. Author: misunism Surnames: Elliot Jonston Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elliot/642.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jim, Well I am quite certain that my Margaret Elliot & her sister Violet are from a Bewcastle Elliot family. As you can imagine there are many Margaret Elliots in England but very few Violet Elliots which is how I finally found the family in Bewcastle. In this family, the 3 oldest are sons: Thomas (b1818), Robert (b1821) & John(b1823) all recorded in the Knowe Presbyterian Chapel, Bewcastle. A note in 1853 says the brothers are in the USA. So I don't know for certain if this John Elliot in Sennett is their brother. Lots of evidence pointing that way but no real proof. I did send an email to the Seymour Public Library in Auburn, NY & received a very detailed reply. John Elliot did marry Jane Jonston and they are buried in Soule Cemetery, Sennett. Info is also on Find A Grave. Jane died in 1889 & John on 30 Jan 1907 in his 84th year. So the age is correct but I was hoping for a nice long obituary which doesn't seem to exist. Just a brief death notice in The Auburn Citizen. ! I will keep searching & let you know if I find anything concrete linking this John to my Elliot family. I think it is clear that the letter was from Jane Jonston's family in England. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. John was the older brother of my ggGrandmother Margaret Elliot. This Elliot family was from Bewcastle, Cumberland, England. John, his brother Robert & possibly 2 other siblings (Thomas & Mary Ann) came to New York in the mid 1840's and settled in Sennett. Margaret Marrs nee Elliot (my ancestor) & her sister Violet Elliot arrived in New York in 1855. Violet married John Lawman in 1857 in Sennett. John Elliot married Jane (surname unknown) about 1848 & remained in Sennett for many years. John is still alive in 1905, aged 82. I suspect that Jane's family was from Darlington, England. Bewcastle is much further west by Carlisle. Thanks for sharing the image of the envelope. Finding a letter from that time period would certainly be a wonderful genealogical discovery!
