Author: JudyElkington70 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.elkington/97.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, I have found his marriage to Ruth W. Wolff which took place in Grimsby in 1950. If you send for his marriage certificate it would give you his father's name and his age at marriage. This would help you to place him in 1950 and would cost £9.50. I also found this website for you which is absolutely Free to search. http://www.forcesreunited.org.uk/index.asp and if he was in the Dragoons in 1950 http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Canal/DRAGOONS.html The marriage certificate would tell you if he was in the Dragoons when he married. If you don't know how to get a certificate on-line let me know abnd I can give you an address. My line looks like this: William Henry Elkington -Albert Edward Elkington <--- migrated to Australia 1912) --Richard Thomas Elkington ---(my mother) Have you had any luck tracing the family back further than William Henry? I've been trying to correctly identify William Henry's father/mother and have had little success. Any info you could pass on would be a HUGE help. Grimsby. This will tell you about the hospital. _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scartho_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scartho) It started life as a workhouse, then a hospital/workhouse and finally it was just a hospital at the beginning of the C20. I don't know much about midwives but I do know they must now be registered and I think it became compulsory about one hundred years ago although midwives have practised since time immemorial. You could contact the Royal College if Midwives at _info@rcm.org.uk_ (mailto:info@rcm.org.uk) . I am sure they would answer your query. You could look at the site _www.FreeBMD.org.uk_ (http://www.FreeBMD.org.uk) for her birth and marriage and probably her death. 3. Hi Judy My name is Ian Beckett. I live in Australia and I am researching the family history of the Mitchell and Higgins family. As part of this research was I am seeking information about a lady named Mary Higgins (nee Mitchell). I am led to believe that she was a midwife and worked at (or from) Scartho Infirmary I am not sure of the exact date of her association with the infirmary. but I know that she was born at Grimsby in 1871 and married at Caistor in 1893. I have no idea of when she died. Therefore, I am making an assumption that her period of work as a midwife would have been about 1900 give or take some years. I was hoping that you may be able to give me some guidance of where to make inquires. Do you know if midwives were required to be licensed and if so, where would these records be kept/. I found your address on a Rootsweb address and you appeared to have some knowledge about this field of medicine. I would really appreciate any help or guidance you may be able to give me please. I will pay for any reasonable costs involved. Regards Ian

I'm fairly certain he descends from the Warwickshire branch. Albert Edward Elkington (b. 1884 Warwickshire; d.1965 Sydney) I think his parents were William Henry Elkington and Elizabeth Daniel, but I'm not 100% certain.
